Chapter 8 - The Price of Betraying a Romano

"Give me two hundred thousand dollars, Emily, or I'll tell the entire world what kind of woman you really are."

Daniel Foster's voice came through the phone with the same careless arrogance Emily remembered from the worst months of her pregnancy.

She stood beside the fireplace, one hand pressed against her stomach.

"Daniel, you disappeared."

"I had problems."

"You blocked my number."

"I needed space."

"You told me you were going to Pennsylvania for work."

"I did go to Pennsylvania."

"Then why didn't you answer when I called from the emergency room?"

Silence.

Emily's eyes filled with tears.

She remembered that night vividly.

She had been five months pregnant and terrified after experiencing severe abdominal pain.

The hospital had kept her under observation.

She had called Daniel eleven times.

He never answered.

Now, months later, he was demanding money.

"Listen," he said impatiently. "I know Antonio Romano left your kid a trust. I know you've been staying with Dominic. Don't pretend you're poor anymore."

Emily went cold.

"How do you know about the trust?"

"People talk."

"Who told you?"

"Doesn't matter."

"Daniel—"

"Two hundred thousand. Forty-eight hours."

The call ended.

Dominic watched Emily lower the phone.

"Tell me what happened."

She shook her head.

"I should have known he'd come back when he heard about money."

"Grace's father?"

She nodded.

Dominic sat beside her.

"What does he want?"

"Money."

"Does he have any legal claim?"

"I don't know."

"We'll ask a family lawyer. You don't have to negotiate with threats."

Emily looked at him.

"He's still her father."

"That doesn't give him permission to intimidate you."

She stared into the fire.

"I wanted Grace to have a family."

Dominic answered quietly.

"She already has one."

The next morning, Isabella received a message from Marco's attorney.

Marco had formally cooperated with investigators.

His evidence included emails, payment records, and security footage showing Adrian's unauthorized access to Antonio's private office.

He also provided information about Dr. Mercer's communications with Victoria.

The investigation was expanding.

A judge had temporarily blocked the disputed asset transfers.

Independent directors were preparing to remove Adrian from his executive position.

But Dominic's own past remained under scrutiny.

Isabella called him to her office.

"We need to discuss your exposure."

Dominic sat across from her.

"Go ahead."

"Your cousin's wrongdoing doesn't erase yours."

He remained silent.

"You authorized payments to intermediaries who used threats to settle business disputes. You maintained relationships with people involved in illegal operations. Some of your companies were used to conceal transactions."

Dominic looked away.

"I know."

"If you want to rebuild your life, you have to stop protecting that system."

"What are you asking me to do?"

"Cooperate with lawful investigations. Provide accurate records. Separate yourself from criminal operations. And accept that accountability may come with penalties."

Dominic leaned back.

For years, he had convinced himself that violence and intimidation were unavoidable parts of protecting the family.

Now he saw the cost.

His father had been isolated.

His company had been infiltrated.

His employees had been threatened.

And a pregnant woman had nearly lost her child after being drawn into his family's conflicts.

"What happens if I cooperate?"

"I can't promise you immunity."

"That's not what I asked."

"You may lose assets, face civil claims, and potentially face criminal charges for conduct investigators can prove."

Dominic considered her words.

Then he nodded.

"Arrange the meetings."

Isabella studied him.

"Are you sure?"

"My father asked me to choose a better life."

He looked toward the window.

"I'm tired of making excuses for the old one."

Meanwhile, Victoria was discovering that luxury could disappear remarkably quickly.

Her accounts were under review.

Several properties had been frozen because investigators believed they were connected to disputed transfers.

Her public relations firm terminated its contract.

The designer who had created her wedding gown refused to be associated with her.

Even her closest society friends stopped answering calls.

She sat alone in a hotel suite when Charles Sterling arrived.

"Dad."

He closed the door.

"We have a problem."

Victoria laughed bitterly.

"Only one?"

"Adrian is cooperating through his attorney."

She stared at him.

"What?"

"He's offering documents that place responsibility on you."

Victoria stood.

"He planned everything!"

"He claims you controlled the money."

"That's a lie!"

Charles lowered his voice.

"Then we need to make sure you don't say anything foolish."

Victoria looked at him.

For the first time, she recognized the same calculation in her father's eyes that she had seen in Adrian's.

"You knew he was going to sacrifice me."

Charles said nothing.

"Dad?"

"I did what was necessary to protect the family."

Victoria felt something inside her break.

"Protect the family?"

She stepped backward.

"You used me."

"Victoria—"

"You sent me after Dominic. You told me to make him love me. You told me Antonio had destroyed us."

Charles approached.

"I gave you an opportunity."

"You gave me a role in your revenge."

He hardened.

"And you enjoyed every luxury it bought you."

Victoria stared at him.

She wanted to deny it.

But she couldn't.

She had enjoyed the money.

The status.

The power of ordering servants around.

The pleasure of believing she was untouchable.

She had willingly become cruel.

And now the people who taught her cruelty were abandoning her.

That afternoon, Dominic visited the independent trustees overseeing Antonio's estate.

They confirmed that Grace's trust would remain protected during the ongoing disputes.

Antonio had specifically directed that no Romano family member, including Dominic, could withdraw the funds for personal use.

The trust would support Grace's education, healthcare, and future needs under independent administration.

Dominic smiled faintly.

"Even now, my father doesn't trust us with a checkbook."

One trustee, an elderly attorney named Samuel Pierce, returned the smile.

"Your father was very specific."

"Did he explain why he included Grace?"

Samuel opened a letter.

"He wanted you to have this after his death."

Dominic recognized the handwriting.

The letter was short.

Dominic,

For most of my life, I believed loyalty could be purchased and fear could keep a family together. I was wrong.

Emily Carter helped me when she had nothing to gain. She saw a frightened old man where others saw an inconvenient burden.

Her daughter deserves a future untouched by the mistakes of men like me.

Do not mistake this gift for repayment. Kindness cannot be bought.

Let it remind you what real strength looks like.

Your father.

Dominic folded the letter.

His eyes were wet.

That evening, Emily met Daniel at a family law attorney's office.

The attorney had advised her to document the threats and avoid making informal financial promises.

Daniel arrived twenty minutes late.

He wore an expensive leather jacket and smelled strongly of cologne.

"Emily."

She didn't stand.

"Daniel."

He looked at her stomach.

"Wow. You're huge."

She said nothing.

He glanced at the attorney.

"Is this necessary?"

"Yes," Emily replied.

Daniel leaned back.

"I just want to be part of my daughter's life."

Emily looked directly at him.

"Then why did you ask for two hundred thousand dollars?"

His expression changed.

"I was upset."

"You threatened me."

"I didn't mean it."

"Who told you about Grace's trust?"

Daniel hesitated.

Emily waited.

Finally, he sighed.

"A woman contacted me."

"What woman?"

"Victoria Sterling."

Emily felt the room tilt.

"She offered you money?"

"She said you were manipulating the Romano family. She wanted me to tell reporters you'd been lying about being abandoned."

Emily stared at him.

"Was I lying?"

Daniel looked away.

"No."

The attorney began taking notes.

"Did Ms. Sterling offer compensation for making those statements?"

Daniel swallowed.

"Yes."

"How much?"

"Fifty thousand dollars."

Emily closed her eyes.

Victoria had tried to destroy her reputation, her livelihood, and her family.

Now she was attempting to weaponize the father of her child.

Daniel leaned forward.

"Emily, I made a mistake."

She opened her eyes.

"No, Daniel. You made a choice. Then you kept making it."

He looked down.

"I'm sorry."

"I hope you become a better person. Grace deserves that. But any future parenting arrangements will be handled legally, with her best interests first."

Daniel nodded slowly.

For the first time, he seemed to understand that money would not purchase forgiveness.

That night, Dominic received confirmation that the independent board had removed Adrian from his temporary leadership position.

A court-appointed monitor would oversee certain disputed transactions while the investigation continued.

Dominic was not automatically restored as chief executive.

His own conduct remained under review.

But the company was no longer under Adrian's control.

Emily found Dominic standing outside the lakeside house.

"Good news?" she asked.

"Some."

He explained.

She smiled.

"Then why do you look so worried?"

"Because I used to think getting the company back would fix everything."

"And now?"

"Now I realize there's a lot I need to fix that has nothing to do with money."

Emily took his hand.

"That's a start."

Dominic looked at her.

"I want to be part of Grace's life, Emily. Not because of my father's trust. Not because I feel responsible for what happened."

She waited.

"Because I love you."

Her breath caught.

He continued.

"And I already love that little girl, even though I haven't met her."

Emily's eyes filled with tears.

"I love you too."

He kissed her gently.

Then his phone rang.

Isabella.

"Dominic, we have a serious development."

"What?"

"Dr. Mercer has agreed to speak with investigators."

Dominic straightened.

"And?"

"He says Antonio's medication schedule was deliberately altered."

"By whom?"

"He's identifying the people who pressured him."

Dominic closed his eyes.

The final pieces were falling into place.

But Isabella wasn't finished.

"Dominic, Mercer also says someone ordered him to falsify a medical report after Antonio's death."

Dominic went still.

"What report?"

May you like

"The report that would have supported a claim that Emily caused his fatal decline."
