Chapter 8 - A WAR BUILT ON A LIE

The newspapers called it the Rossi-Moretti collapse.

They were wrong.

Only one empire collapsed.

Leo dismantled his own.

For six weeks, lawyers worked through every company in the ledger.

Anything connected to extortion, bribery or violence was surrendered to investigators.

Legitimate businesses were separated.

Employees were protected where possible.

Victims received restitution.

Men who expected Leo to start a war discovered something far more dangerous.

He was ending one.

Elena watched from the estate library as he signed away a shipping company worth millions.

“You don’t have to destroy everything.”

“I’m not.”

“You just surrendered twelve percent of your holdings.”

“It was built with dirty money.”

“So was this house.”

Leo looked around.

“Want me to burn it?”

“No.”

“Good. I like the kitchen.”

She smiled.

Their relationship existed in an unnamed space.

Not employer and maid.

Not quite lovers.

Something more frightening because it could become real.

Evelyn recovered.

Arthur testified against Carlo in exchange for reduced charges.

Daniel went home.

Marco became head of security, though he complained that Elena inspected his camera placements better than he did.

Then came Giuseppe’s will.

The legitimate Rossi holdings had been divided equally.

Half to Leo.

Half to Elena.

Elena refused.

Leo refused her refusal.

“This is ridiculous.”

“It’s legally yours.”

“I’m not taking your father’s money.”

“He wanted you to have it.”

“Why?”

Evelyn answered.

“Guilt.”

She entered the library slowly.

“Giuseppe believed Sofia died because he waited too long to oppose Carlo. Protecting us became his way of honoring her.”

Elena shook her head.

“I don’t want an empire built from guilt.”

“Then build something else.”

Leo looked at her.

The idea remained.

Weeks later, Elena proposed converting part of Rossi Holdings into a foundation for families affected by organized crime.

Leo read her proposal.

“You made spreadsheets.”

“Obviously.”

“You corrected my math.”

“Also obviously.”

“You’re enjoying this.”

“A little.”

He signed.

Then added another ten million dollars.

Elena stared.

“That’s excessive.”

“You sound like my accountant.”

“I am better than your accountant.”

“You were also better than my maid.”

She threw a pen at him.

He caught it.

For the first time, Leo laughed.

Not the short, humorless exhale she knew.

A real laugh.

Elena stared.

“What?”

“Nothing.”

“You’re staring.”

“I’ve never heard that.”

“What?”

“You happy.”

His smile disappeared slowly.

The room changed.

Leo crossed toward her.

“Elena.”

Her breathing shortened.

He stopped inches away.

“I need to ask you something.”

“Okay.”

“When you left that morning…”

He touched the note in his pocket.

He still carried it.

“Why did you save me?”

She had asked herself the same question.

Duty was not the answer.

Guilt was not the answer.

“I couldn’t imagine the kitchen without you in it.”

Leo frowned.

“That’s my line.”

“No. You had coffee. I had you.”

Silence.

Then he kissed her.

Slowly.

No urgency.

No ownership.

He gave her enough time to move away.

She didn’t.

Six months of restrained glances broke quietly between them.

When they separated, Leo rested his forehead against hers.

“I should’ve done that months ago.”

“You thought I was a maid.”

“You were a maid.”

“I was an undercover financial investigator.”

“You were terrible at dusting.”

“I was excellent at dusting.”

“You missed the west bookshelf twice.”

“I was reading your ledger.”

“I know.”

She laughed.

Then the library window shattered.

Leo pulled her down.

A bullet struck the wall.

Marco’s men moved instantly.

The shooter escaped.

But he left something behind.

A photograph placed outside the perimeter.

Leo picked it up wearing gloves.

It showed Elena and Leo kissing through the library window.

On the back:

CARLO WASN’T THE LAST MORETTI.

Elena’s smile vanished.

Leo looked toward the dark tree line.

The war had not ended.

Someone had inherited it.

May you like

And this time, the target was not Leo.

A red circle had been drawn around Elena’s face.
