Chapter 6 - THE NIGHT LEO CHOSE HER

They returned to the estate before dawn.
The police were gone.
Arthur was placed under guard—not as a prisoner, Leo said, but because nobody yet knew whether the Morettis wanted him alive.
Elena stood in the kitchen.
6:27 a.m.
Her body remembered the routine before her mind did.
Ceramic cup.
Espresso.
One sugar.
She stopped.
Leo stood in the doorway.
Neither spoke.
Finally Elena pushed the cup toward him.
“Habit.”
Leo looked at it.
“You remembered.”
“I spent six months remembering everything about you.”
The sentence landed differently now.
Elena turned away.
Leo said, “The certificate was fake.”
“I know.”
“I never believed it.”
“For about thirty seconds, we both did.”
“Worst thirty seconds of my life.”
She laughed unexpectedly.
It was small and broken, but real.
Leo almost smiled.
Then his phone rang.
Marco had traced Evelyn.
A farmhouse in Pennsylvania.
They left within an hour.
Evelyn Bennett opened the door herself.
Elena froze on the porch.
Twenty-four years of anger disappeared.
So did every speech she had imagined.
Her mother looked smaller than she remembered.
Older.
A scar crossed her left temple.
“Elena.”
One word.
Elena slapped her.
Leo stiffened.
Evelyn did not move.
Then Elena threw her arms around her.
Both women collapsed against the doorway.
Leo looked away.
Some moments did not belong to him.
Later, Evelyn told them everything.
Giuseppe Rossi had indeed saved her.
Carlo Moretti discovered Evelyn had copied financial records. He ordered both Evelyn and Leo’s mother, Sofia, killed because Sofia had learned of Carlo’s betrayal.
Giuseppe could only reach one location in time.
He chose Evelyn because she carried the evidence capable of eventually destroying Carlo.
Sofia died in what was staged as a car accident.
Leo listened without expression.
“My father chose evidence over my mother.”
Evelyn shook her head.
“No. Sofia chose.”
Leo looked at her.
“She called Giuseppe. Told him to save me.”
“Why?”
“Because I had Elena.”
Evelyn’s eyes filled.
“Sofia said a child should not lose her mother if there was still a choice.”
Leo walked outside.
Elena followed.
He stood beside the SUV.
“My whole life I hated my father for surviving her.”
“Leo.”
“He let me believe he failed.”
“He protected your mother’s decision.”
“He lied.”
“So did I.”
Leo looked at her.
“That’s different.”
“Is it?”
“Yes.”
“How?”
“Because your lie brought you into my house.”
“And almost got you killed.”
“No.”
He stepped closer.
“Your lie is the reason I’m alive.”
Silence stretched between them.
Elena whispered, “I came to destroy you.”
“But you didn’t.”
“I wanted proof your family killed my mother.”
“You found proof mine saved her.”
“I don’t know what to do with that.”
“Neither do I.”
A car approached fast.
Too fast.
Leo turned.
Gunfire shattered the farmhouse windows.
He shoved Elena behind the SUV.
Marco returned fire.
Evelyn screamed inside.
Leo drew his weapon.
A second vehicle came from the opposite direction.
Trap.
“Get your mother!”
Leo fired toward the road.
Elena ran inside.
Evelyn was bleeding from her shoulder.
Elena dragged her toward the rear door.
A gunman entered through the kitchen.
Elena grabbed a cast-iron skillet and struck him across the face.
He fell.
She took his weapon.
When she reached the yard, Leo was on one knee.
Blood covered his shirt.
“Leo!”
“Not mine.”
Then a bullet struck him.
He dropped.
Elena screamed.
Everything narrowed.
She fired until the attacker disappeared behind the car.
Marco reached Leo.
“Through-and-through shoulder!”
Elena dropped beside him.
Leo’s eyes opened.
“You okay?”
“You got shot and you’re asking me?”
“Answer.”
“Yes.”
“Your mother?”
“Alive.”
“Good.”
His eyes closed.
“Leo!”
He opened them again.
“Stop yelling.”
She laughed and cried simultaneously.
Then he whispered:
“Elena.”
“What?”
“If I survive this, I’m firing you.”
She stared.
“Why?”
“Worst maid I’ve ever had.”
She pressed her forehead against his.
“You’d never survive a week without me.”
His mouth almost curved.
“Then I guess you better stay.”
Behind them, sirens approached.
But Elena knew something had changed.
Leo had spent his life choosing power over vulnerability.
She had spent hers choosing answers over attachment.

On that blood-covered ground, both made a different choice.
Each other.
