Chapter 5 - THE SECRET BENEATH HER NAME

Elena watched the video seventeen times.
On the eighteenth, Leo took the phone away.
“You’re hurting yourself.”
“That’s my mother.”
“I know.”
“She’s alive.”
“It appears so.”
Elena stood abruptly.
“Appears?”
“Video can be manipulated.”
“She touched Daniel.”
“Then we verify it.”
Elena stared at him.
“You always talk like everything is a business transaction?”
“When I’m frightened.”
That stopped her.
Leo Rossi had admitted fear.
Not of death.
Of being wrong.
Arthur arrived forty minutes later.
He looked ten years older.
When Elena entered the room, his expression twisted.
“You.”
“I’m sorry about Daniel.”
“You exposed me.”
“You sold Leo.”
“To save my son.”
“And I was supposed to know that?”
“No.”
Arthur looked away.
“No, you weren’t.”
Leo placed the video on a larger monitor.
Arthur pointed toward the woman.
“I’ve seen her before.”
Elena stepped closer.
“Where?”
“Rossi estate. Years ago.”
Leo turned.
“When?”
“You were maybe sixteen.”
Arthur rubbed his face.
“Your father had a woman brought through the service entrance. Blonde. Scared. She stayed two nights.”
Elena whispered, “My mother.”
“Could’ve been.”
“Why?”
“I wasn’t senior enough to ask.”
Leo pulled the black ledger toward him.
Elena finally understood what bothered her about it.
“Give me that.”
Leo raised an eyebrow.
She opened the book.
Columns.
Dates.
Payments.
Codes.
Her finger moved rapidly.
“Your father wasn’t recording expenses.”
“What?”
“He was recording leverage.”
She pointed.
“These aren’t dollar amounts. They’re cross-references.”
Leo leaned closer.
Elena turned several pages.
“See the repeating numbers? They correspond to dates. Court filings. Property records.”
Arthur frowned.
“How can you know?”
“Because my mother taught me.”
Silence.
Elena’s voice weakened.
“She used to give me number puzzles when I was little.”
She found a sequence matching Evelyn’s disappearance.
Then another.
A location code.
Arthur recognized it.
“St. Vincent’s.”
Leo frowned.
“The abandoned hospital?”
Arthur nodded.
“Closed fifteen years ago.”
They drove there after dark.
Leo refused to let Elena stay behind.
Elena refused to stay behind anyway.
The hospital stood empty at the edge of the city.
They entered through a basement door.
Dust covered everything.
Elena followed the ledger coordinates to an old records room.
Behind a rusted cabinet they found a steel lockbox.
Inside was a flash drive.
And a birth certificate.
Elena picked it up.
Her own name.
Elena Marie Bennett.
Mother: Evelyn Bennett.
Father:
She stared.
Leo saw her expression.
“What?”
She handed him the document.
The father’s name was not the man who had raised Elena.
It read:
Giuseppe Rossi.
Nobody spoke.
Leo looked at Elena.
Then at the paper.
Then back at Elena.
“No.”
Arthur whispered a curse.
Elena felt sick.
“This makes you—”
“My sister.”
Leo backed away as if she had struck him.
Every quiet moment between them changed meaning at once.
Every glance.
Every unspoken attraction.
Every almost-confession.
Elena pressed both hands against her mouth.
“No.”
Leo’s face had become stone.
Arthur picked up the flash drive.
“Maybe this is fake.”
“It has a seal,” Elena whispered.
“Seals can be forged.”
Leo took the certificate.
Something caught his eye.
“The registration number.”
“What?”
“My birth certificate uses a different county sequence.”
Elena stared.
Leo looked at Arthur.
“Someone wanted us to find this.”
A sound echoed in the hallway.
Metal against concrete.
Arthur drew his weapon.
Lights went out.
Gunfire erupted.
Leo grabbed Elena and dragged her behind a cabinet.
Arthur fired toward the doorway.
A man screamed.
Another shot.
Then silence.
Leo’s hand covered Elena’s head.
“You hit?”
“No.”
Arthur called from darkness.
“I’m good.”
Leo switched on his phone flashlight.
A dead gunman lay near the entrance.
Elena recognized him.
One of Samuel Price’s men.
In his pocket they found a burner phone.
One message had arrived four minutes earlier.
MAKE SURE THEY FIND THE CERTIFICATE BEFORE YOU CLEAN THE ROOM.
Leo stared at it.
“They wanted us to believe it.”
“Why?”
“To separate us.”
Elena looked at the fake birth certificate.
Someone feared them together.
Arthur inserted the flash drive into an offline laptop from their vehicle.
One video file.
Evelyn appeared on-screen.
Younger.
Terrified.
But alive.
“If Elena ever sees this,” she said, “Giuseppe Rossi is not your father.”
Elena closed her eyes in relief.
Then Evelyn continued.
“But Leo needs to know what his father did the night Elena was born.”
Leo leaned closer.
Evelyn looked directly into the camera.
“Giuseppe traded the life of his own wife to keep my daughter alive.”
Leo stopped breathing.
His mother had died the night Elena was born.
For thirty years, Leo had been told it was an accident.
Now Elena understood.
Their families had not merely been connected.

And somewhere, Evelyn Bennett was still alive to explain why.
