Chapter 7 - THE GHOST OF DANIEL BENNETT

Three days after the reunion, the Moretti estate was filled with a peace it had not known in decades.

The Sterling name had been completely scrubbed from Chicago’s civic records. Federal indictments landed like thunderbolts across the state capital. Over a dozen corrupt officials, judges, and private contractors were arrested in dawn raids executed by the Department of Justice, armed with Daniel Bennett’s decrypted logs.

Vanessa Sterling was sentenced to twenty-five years for conspiracy to commit kidnapping and fraud.

Richard Sterling, stripped of his law license, his fortune, and his freedom, was remanded without bail to federal custody, facing consecutive life sentences for orchestrated murder and racketeering.

In the private garden behind the Moretti mansion, beneath the sheltering branches of a hundred-year-old weeping willow, a new monument of polished white granite had been erected.

Carved into the stone were the words:

**DANIEL BENNETT**

*A Guardian of Innocence. A Hero in the Shadows.*

*“Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for his friends.”*

I stood before the stone, holding a bouquet of white lilies. Vincent stood on my right, dressed in a simple black suit, while Elena stood on my left, holding little Grace’s hand.

Grace walked forward carefully and placed her small wooden rabbit at the base of the monument.

“Thank you, Uncle Daniel,” the little girl said, waving to the stone as if she could see him standing there.

Vincent stepped forward, laying a single black rose beside the lilies.

“I spent my whole life believing that power came from fear,” Vincent said quietly, looking up at the gray winter sky. “Daniel Bennett taught me that true power comes from protecting those who cannot protect themselves. I owe him my family. I owe him my soul.”

Elena put an arm around my shoulders, drawing me close. “You never have to be alone again, Clara. You are our family now. Forever.”

As if in answer, a sharp, sudden tightening gripped my abdomen.

I gasped, dropping my purse to the grass.

Vincent reacted instantly, his arm wrapping around my waist to support my full weight. “Clara? What is it?”

I gripped Vincent’s lapel, breathing through the intense pressure building in my pelvis.

“Vincent...” I groaned, a warm trickle running down my leg. “My water just broke. The baby is coming.”
