Chapter 24 - THE GILDED LABYRINTH

Shelter Island was pitch-black under the heavy storm clouds. The abandoned naval battery—a decaying concrete fortress built into the jagged coastal cliffs during the Second World War—loomed like a gargantuan tomb against the roaring Atlantic surf.

We set up our forward command in a fisherman’s shack three miles down the shoreline. Elena had insisted on joining us, wearing tactical gear over her bandaged shoulder, her face set like stone.

“The battery has three subterranean levels,” Elena explained, spreading out an old municipal blueprint she had retrieved from her family archives. “Julian will keep Grace on the lowest level, closest to the sea docks so he can escape by boat if things go south.”

“There’s only one road leading up to the main blast doors,” Vincent said, tapping the map. “He’ll have heavy machine-gun nests covering the choke point. If we charge the front, he executes Grace before we breach the secondary gate.”

I stood beside the table, studying the coastal contours Daniel had sketched in his private notes. “Daniel wrote about this facility five years ago,” I chimed in, pointing to a faint pencil notation in the margin of page forty-four. “Look here. Daniel monitored the Sterling family’s illicit arms shipments into this very harbor. He marked an old drainage sluice running directly from the cliffside tide pools up into the boiler room beneath level three.”

Vincent looked up, his eyes meeting mine. “A water infiltration route.”

“The tide is low right now,” I continued. “A small team could climb the rocks, slip through the sluice pipe, and bypass every surface checkpoint without firing a single shot.”

“It’s suicide for a full squad,” Elena noted grimly. “The pipe is too narrow. Only two, maybe three people could fit through before the tide turns and drowns the passage.”

“Then it’s just me,” Vincent said flatly.

“No,” Elena countered, gripping his arm with her uninjured hand. “You need someone watching your six while you carry Grace. I’m going with you.”

“Elena, you're wounded—”

“She is my daughter, Vincent!” Elena’s voice broke with fierce, undeniable authority. “I sat helplessly in that bunker listening to her scream while Julian dragged her away. I am not waiting in this shack. I am pulling the trigger on Julian Sterling myself.”

Vincent stared into his wife’s unyielding eyes, seeing the same deadly resolve that made the Moretti family kings. He nodded once.

“Gear up,” Vincent said. “We move in ten.”
