Chapter 40 - THE COLD DAWN

The sound of the final gunshot lingered in the vast, empty ballroom for a long time, swallowed slowly by the velvet curtains and the heavy carpet. Salvatore Moretti slumped forward onto the ruined mahogany table, his silver-tipped cane rolling from his limp fingers and clattering onto the floor with a hollow, empty ring.
The war that had started before Hope was even conceived was over.
Vincent stood motionless above the body of his father. For five agonizing seconds, the only sound was the faint, rhythmic breathing of my baby against my collarbone. Then, slowly, Vincent lowered the gun, his shoulders dropping as an immense, crushing weight rolled off his back.
Elena walked over to him, stepping over the scattered shell casings. She didn't say a word. She simply reached out, wrapping her arms around his waist, burying her face into his chest. Vincent’s good arm came around her, holding her tightly, his eyes closing as he buried his face in her dark hair.
After a long moment, Vincent opened his eyes and looked across the bloodstained table at me.
He walked over slowly, his steps heavy with exhaustion. He looked down at Hope, who was staring up at him with wide, curious eyes, completely untainted by the violence that had just secured her freedom.
“It’s over, Sarah,” Vincent said, his voice gentler than I had ever heard it. “The Commission signed the transfer. The seven hundred million is locked in a blind trust under your name and Hope’s. No boss, no soldier, no syndicate on this continent will ever touch you again. You have the full protection of the Moretti name, with none of its chains.”
Tears blurred my vision, warm and liberating. I reached out, resting my hand against his arm. “Thank you, Vincent. Daniel would be proud.”
Vincent gave a faint, sad smile. “Daniel was smarter than all of us. Now go. Marco has a car waiting at the private street exit. The farm in Vermont is yours. Raise her under the open sky.”
An hour later, the black sedan was cruising smoothly north along the Taconic State Parkway, leaving the concrete canyons of New York far behind. Elena had stayed with Vincent to oversee the consolidation of the territories, but Marco sat behind the wheel, driving with steady, practiced precision.
In the back seat, I sat with Hope in her secure baby seat, her tiny hand wrapped around my pinky finger. The morning sun was rising over the frosted hills of upstate New York, painting the snowy landscape in brilliant shades of rose and gold.
For the first time in nine terrifying months, I took a deep, full breath.
The heavy suitcase was gone. The ledgers were burned. The monsters who had hunted us were dead or in the shadows. We were free.
Suddenly, Marco’s phone on the dashboard buzzed—an urgent, high-priority encrypted call.
Marco glanced at the screen, his eyebrows knitting together in confusion. He pressed the speaker button.
“Marco,” Vincent’s voice crackled through the speaker, but the calm triumph from an hour ago was completely gone. His voice was frantic, laced with a raw panic that turned my blood instantly back to ice.
“Vincent? What is it? We’re past White Plains,” Marco answered.
“Marco, stop the car!” Vincent screamed through the static. “Do not look at the trunk! Get Sarah and the baby out right now!”
“Vincent, what are you talking about?” Marco asked, hitting the brakes, the car skidding onto the gravel shoulder of the empty highway.
“We found Daniel’s second journal in Salvatore’s safe,” Vincent’s voice broke, the signal breaking up as the call began to degrade. “Daniel didn't just lock the trust with Hope’s blood... Salvatore planted a fail-safe trigger in Daniel’s personal belongings! The green binder... Sarah, the green binder—!”
The call cut out into a harsh burst of static.
My gaze slowly, terrifyingly dropped to the floorboard at my feet.

There, resting beneath the passenger seat, was Daniel’s dark green binder.
And from between its thick leather covers, a tiny, rhythmic red light began to flash, accompanied by a high-pitched, accelerating *beep... beep... beep...*
