Chapter 9 - The Promise Beneath the Pink Candles

The final investigation uncovered the missing agreement in a safe deposit box opened under a false identity.
It showed that Richard Sterling and Vincent Moretti had planned to gain control of the Moretti company through Dominic's marriage to Vanessa. They had expected Dominic's grief to make him dependent on Vanessa, while Vincent would continue controlling the business behind the scenes.
The fire had been intended to make Sophie disappear.
When she survived, the conspirators chose concealment rather than confession.
The agreement did not excuse anyone. It simply explained why so many people had worked so hard to keep the truth buried.
Vincent was convicted for his role in the cover-up and related financial crimes. Richard received a lengthy prison sentence for his part in the conspiracy, kidnapping, and arson. Vanessa's cooperation reduced some of her penalties, but she still faced imprisonment for her own actions.
Dominic did not attend Vanessa's sentencing.
He had a more important promise to keep.
Sophie's sixth birthday party was held in the garden of their family home.
No chandeliers. No champagne. No powerful guests trying to impress one another.
Just a small table covered in pink flowers, a few children from Sophie's new school, Hannah, and a chocolate cake with six pink candles.
Dominic had baked it himself.
The cake leaned slightly to one side.
The frosting was uneven.
Sophie thought it was perfect.
"Daddy, you made it!"
"I did."
"All by yourself?"
"Mostly. Hannah saved it when I nearly burned the kitchen down."
Hannah laughed.
Sophie giggled so hard that she had to hold the table.
Dominic watched her with tears in his eyes.
For three years, he had imagined this day as something impossible.
Now it was happening in front of him.
Before she blew out the candles, Sophie tugged his sleeve.
"Can I make two wishes?"
"You can make a hundred."
She closed her eyes.
"I wish nobody ever has to be scared like I was."
Dominic swallowed hard.
"And the second?"
She opened one eye.
"I wish you would make me a cake every birthday."
He laughed through his tears.
"That wish is already granted."
She blew out the candles.
Everyone applauded.
Later, when the guests had gone and Sophie was asleep, Dominic sat beside her bed.
The silver bracelet rested on the nightstand. The stuffed rabbit lay beneath her arm.
He whispered the words he had rehearsed for three years.
"I'm sorry I couldn't find you sooner."
Sophie stirred in her sleep.
Dominic gently brushed a curl from her forehead.
"I'll spend the rest of my life making sure you know you were never forgotten."
For the first time, he did not feel the need to promise that he could control everything.
He couldn't.
May you like
But he could tell the truth. He could protect her. He could listen when she was afraid.
And he could be there when she woke up.
