Chapter 8 - The Truth in the Courtroom

The genetic test confirmed what Dominic had known the moment Sophie called him Daddy.
She was his daughter.
The court also received the original fire records, the financial ledger, the recordings, and testimony from Dr. Elise Morgan.
Vincent Moretti admitted that he had helped falsify the family's records and concealed Sophie's survival. He claimed he had acted out of fear, but the prosecution argued that his actions had helped protect a criminal conspiracy.
Vanessa pleaded guilty to charges related to the kidnapping and concealment of a child, as well as her role in the arson scheme. Richard faced more serious charges, including conspiracy, kidnapping, witness intimidation, and attempted obstruction of justice.
Dominic testified about the years he had spent believing Sophie was dead.
He described the empty bedroom, the tiny shoes he kept beside his bed, and the birthday cake he had ordered every year even though nobody could eat it.
The courtroom was silent.
Then the defense attorney asked whether Dominic had ever been involved in criminal activity himself.
He could have denied everything.
He could have used his money and influence to make the question disappear.
Instead, he answered honestly.
"Yes. I built my fortune in a world where people were afraid to challenge me. I believed that power could protect my family. It did not. It made it easier for others to lie to me, and it made me too comfortable with silence."
The statement damaged his reputation, but it also helped establish that he was willing to cooperate with the broader investigation.
The judge later ruled that Sophie could remain with Dominic under a family court supervision plan, with counseling and independent welfare checks.
Dominic accepted every condition.
He wanted Sophie to be safe, not simply returned to him because he was wealthy.
After the hearing, he found her waiting with Hannah in the courthouse garden.
She ran toward him.
"Did the judge say I can come home?"
Dominic knelt.
"Yes, little star. You can come home."
She threw her arms around him.
"Forever?"
"Forever."
Hannah smiled through her tears.
For the first time since the ballroom, Dominic felt the beginnings of peace.
But as they prepared to leave, a court officer approached with a sealed envelope.
It had been recovered from Richard's private safe.
The front bore a name Dominic had not expected to see.
His late wife's.
Inside was a letter written months before the fire.
Dominic, if anything happens to me, protect Sophie from the people who say they love her most. The danger is closer than you think.
The letter had never been delivered.
At the bottom was a second line.
I found the original agreement between Richard Sterling and someone in our own family.
Dominic looked up at Vincent, who was being escorted past the courthouse doors.
His uncle avoided his eyes.

The conspiracy had been larger than Dominic knew.
And his wife had tried to warn him.
