Chapter 1 - The Little Girl Who Was Supposed to Be Dead

The crystal chandeliers glittered above a hundred wealthy guests, but Dominic Moretti saw none of them.

He stood beneath the golden arch at the center of his ballroom, accepting congratulations on his engagement while his fiancée, Vanessa Sterling, smiled beside him in a diamond-covered gown.

To the outside world, Dominic was a ruthless businessman who had inherited a criminal empire and transformed it into one of the most feared organizations in New York.

To Vanessa, he was the richest man she had ever met.

But to Dominic himself, there was only one person who had ever mattered more than power.

His daughter, Sophie.

Three years earlier, a fire had destroyed his country house. Sophie, then three years old, had supposedly died in her bedroom. Investigators found enough evidence to declare her dead, although the remains had never been conclusively identified.

Dominic had spent millions searching for answers.

Nothing had brought his little girl back.

Eventually, grief had consumed him so completely that he stopped asking questions.

Until that evening.

The ballroom doors opened, and Hannah Reed, one of the household maids, entered carrying a small white birthday cake.

Six pink candles stood on top.

Vanessa noticed immediately.

"Hannah! What are you doing?"

Hannah stopped beside the entrance.

"I'm sorry to interrupt, ma'am. A child asked me to deliver something."

Vanessa hurried toward her.

"Then deliver it to the kitchen!"

She swung her hand toward the tray.

Dominic caught her wrist before the cake could fall.

"Vanessa. Stop."

His gaze dropped to the frosting.

Four words were written in pink icing.

HAPPY 6TH BIRTHDAY, SOPHIE.

The ballroom seemed to disappear.

Dominic stared at the name.

Today was Sophie's birthday.

She would have been six.

His fingers loosened around Vanessa's wrist.

"Who made this?"

Hannah's eyes filled with tears.

"A little girl asked me to bring it to her daddy."

Dominic looked up.

"What little girl?"

"She said her name was Sophie Moretti."

A glass shattered somewhere behind them.

Vanessa had dropped hers.

"She's lying!" she screamed. "Throw that cake away!"

Dominic turned slowly toward her.

"Why are you so frightened?"

"Because this is sick! Someone is using your daughter's death to humiliate you!"

Hannah shook her head.

"She knew things, sir. Things nobody could have told her."

"Like what?"

"She said you called her your little star. She said you promised to bake her a chocolate cake when she turned six."

Dominic's knees nearly buckled.

He had made that promise the night before the fire.

He remembered Sophie curled against his chest, her tiny fingers tangled in his shirt while she begged him to make a cake with pink flowers.

He had promised her.

Then the next day, his world had burned.

Hannah reached into her apron and produced a small silver bracelet.

A star-shaped charm hung from the chain.

Dominic recognized it instantly.

He had given it to Sophie on her third birthday.

The bracelet had disappeared with her.

He closed his fist around it.

"Where is she?"

Hannah pointed toward the ballroom doors.

"She's waiting outside."

Vanessa grabbed Dominic's arm.

"Please, don't do this."

He stared at her.

"Don't do what?"

"Open that door!"

The desperation in her voice silenced the guests.

Dominic stepped away from her.

"Why are you afraid of a six-year-old child?"

Vanessa's lips trembled.

"Because she's not your daughter!"

Before Dominic could respond, a tiny voice came from the other side of the doors.

"Daddy?"

His entire body went still.

The voice was older than the one he remembered, but the softness was unmistakable.

"Daddy, are you there?"

Tears blurred his vision.

He took one step toward the doors.

Then another.

Vanessa dropped to her knees.

"Dominic, please! If you let her in, everything will be destroyed!"

He reached for the handle.

Hannah caught his sleeve.

"Sir, there's something you should know."

He turned.

"What?"

Hannah's voice trembled.

"Sophie told me the woman who took her away after the fire is inside this ballroom."

Dominic slowly looked back at Vanessa.

Her face had gone completely white.

From behind the doors, Sophie whispered again.

"Daddy… please don't let her take me away this time."

Dominic opened the doors.

A little girl stood in the hallway wearing a faded blue dress and white shoes that were far too small.

Her dark curls framed a face he had dreamed about for three years.

She held a stuffed rabbit with one missing ear.

Dominic had bought that rabbit for her when she was two.

The girl stared at him with enormous brown eyes.

For several seconds, neither moved.

Then she whispered the words that shattered what remained of his heart.

"You came back for me."

Dominic fell to his knees.

"Sophie?"

She ran toward him.

"Daddy!"

He caught her in his arms, holding her so tightly that Hannah had to gently remind him to let the child breathe.

Sophie buried her face in his neck.

"I missed you."

Dominic sobbed openly.

"I thought you were gone. I thought I'd lost you."

She pulled back and touched his cheek with a tiny hand.

"I wasn't gone, Daddy."

Then she looked over his shoulder.

Her expression changed.

Fear crept into her eyes.

"She's here."

Dominic turned.

Vanessa was standing beside the abandoned cake.

Sophie immediately clung to his jacket.

"Please don't let her put me in the car again."

Dominic's blood turned cold.

He looked at Vanessa.

"What car?"

Vanessa opened her mouth.

No sound came out.

Sophie whispered into his ear.

"The lady said you didn't want me anymore."

Dominic rose slowly, his daughter in his arms.

"Who told you that?"

Sophie pointed directly at Vanessa.

"Her."

May you like

And for the first time in three years, Dominic Moretti knew that his daughter's death had been a lie.

But he had no idea how many people had helped create it.
