Chapter 8 - The Trial of the Living

The case against Michael Moretti, Richard Harlan, and Judge Thomas Wexler took months to prepare.

The evidence from the jewelry box became the starting point. The ledger, recovered sedan, financial records, and recordings established a pattern of conspiracy and deliberate concealment.

Richard testified about the meeting and admitted his role in arranging it. His cooperation did not erase his responsibility, but it helped investigators reconstruct the events of the night Antonio died.

Judge Wexler denied the allegations until the recovered recordings and financial records contradicted his statements.

Vanessa testified about her meetings with Richard, the photograph, and the documents her father had concealed.

She also admitted that she had lied to Dante and attempted to prevent Sophie from opening the jewelry box.

Her testimony was painful.

It was also necessary.

During the trial, the prosecution presented evidence that Sterling Strategic Holdings had received payments connected to the scheme. Vanessa's father, Richard Sterling, was charged with conspiracy and financial crimes after investigators uncovered his role in the transfers and concealment.

The courtroom was packed on the day Dante took the stand.

He described his father's death, the years spent searching for Richard, and the moment Sophie opened the hidden compartment.

“I thought I knew who had betrayed my father,” Dante said. “I believed the official story because I wanted the uncertainty to end. I didn't understand that the people closest to us had spent years making sure the truth remained buried.”

The prosecutor asked what he had learned.

Dante paused.

“That loyalty means nothing if it requires you to ignore the truth. And family is not an excuse for cruelty or corruption.”

The defense attempted to portray Dante as a rival seeking control of the family business.

But the documents spoke for themselves.

The recovered sedan linked Michael to the night of the murder. The payments connected the defendants to the conspiracy. The recordings established that Wexler knew the plan in advance and helped conceal the truth afterward.

The jury found Michael guilty of conspiracy and related crimes. Wexler was convicted of corruption and his role in the cover-up. Richard was convicted for his involvement in the conspiracy, despite his cooperation.

Richard Sterling was also convicted on charges supported by the financial evidence.

Vanessa received a reduced sentence after pleading guilty to her own offenses and providing substantial assistance to the investigation.

Dante attended the sentencing.

He did not celebrate.

When Michael was led away, his uncle looked back at him with hatred.

Dante felt no triumph.

He felt grief for the brother his father had lost, for the mother who had died carrying the truth, and for the years he had spent mistaking anger for purpose.

Outside the courthouse, reporters shouted questions.

“Will the Moretti family seek revenge?”

“Will you continue running the organization?”

Dante stopped before the cameras.

“No one will be punished outside the law for what happened to my father. The evidence has been presented, the court has reached its verdict, and the matter belongs to the justice system.”

A reporter asked whether he believed his family could ever recover.

Dante looked toward the courthouse doors.

“Recovery begins when people stop lying about what happened.”

He walked away without another word.

For the first time in twelve years, his father's murder was no longer an unsolved mystery.

And Dante was finally free to decide what kind of man he wanted to become.
