Chapter 3 - The Key Beneath the Marble

The Moretti family mausoleum stood on a hill overlooking the estate's oldest gardens.

Rain had begun to fall by the time Dante arrived. Marco accompanied him, while two security officers remained near the entrance.

Dante had visited his father's grave hundreds of times.

He had never noticed the small brass plate beneath the marble bench opposite the tomb.

The plate bore the initials M.M.

He inserted the key.

A soft click sounded.

The bench's lower panel opened, revealing a narrow metal compartment.

Inside lay a leather-bound ledger, a cassette recorder, and a sealed envelope bearing Eleanor's handwriting.

Dante opened the envelope first.

My son,

If you are reading this, then I was unable to finish what I began.

Your father was not killed because of a business disagreement. He was killed because he intended to expose a betrayal that reached beyond our family.

Michael arranged the meeting with Richard. Richard brought the weapon, but the order came from someone else.

The second car carried the person who gave that order.

Do not trust the official report. Do not trust the confession Richard signed. And do not assume that the person who mourned your father loved him.

The ledger contains the payments. The recording contains the voice.

Find the truth before the people responsible destroy it.

Love always,

Mother

Dante read the letter twice.

His mother had known the truth.

She had spent twelve years living beside the family business, watching the man who betrayed her husband inherit power and influence.

And she had kept silent until she found a way to protect her son.

Marco opened the ledger.

It contained a list of payments made over several months before Antonio's death. Several were routed through shell companies, but one name appeared repeatedly.

Harlan Security Consulting.

Another appeared beside it.

Sterling Strategic Holdings.

Vanessa's family company.

Dante stared at the page.

“Your father was involved?”

Vanessa, who had followed them from the estate, stood at the mausoleum entrance.

“I didn't know about these payments.”

Dante turned sharply.

“Why are you here?”

“Because Eleanor told me that if you found the compartment, I had to help you understand what was inside.”

He wanted to send her away.

But the ledger contained names and transactions he could not yet interpret.

“Come here,” he said.

Vanessa approached cautiously.

She examined the entries.

“My father owned Sterling Strategic Holdings twelve years ago. I was still in college.”

“Was he working with Michael?”

“I don't know.”

Dante pointed to a payment dated two days before Antonio's murder.

“Three hundred thousand dollars. Paid to Harlan Security. Authorized by M. Moretti and R. Sterling.”

Vanessa's face drained of color.

“My father signed this.”

“Can you prove it?”

She nodded.

“The company's old records are stored in a private archive. My father kept copies of every major transaction because he never trusted electronic systems.”

“Where?”

“At his former office in the Sterling building.”

Dante closed the ledger.

“We're going there.”

Marco lifted the cassette recorder.

“Should we listen to this first?”

Dante pressed the play button.

Static crackled through the speaker.

Then a woman's voice emerged.

Eleanor.

“If anything happens to me, the people listening to this must understand that Michael Moretti was not the only person involved.”

A second voice followed.

A man's voice.

Dante knew it.

He had heard it at family dinners, funerals, and business meetings.

His father's oldest friend.

Judge Thomas Wexler.

The man who had presided over the initial proceedings against Richard Harlan and later dismissed several key pieces of evidence.

Dante's stomach tightened.

The recording continued.

“Antonio was going to expose everything,” Wexler said. “If he reached the investigators, the entire arrangement would collapse.”

Eleanor replied, “Then you should have stopped him legally.”

“And let him destroy all of us?”

A pause.

Then Wexler spoke again.

“Michael will handle the meeting. Richard will take the blame. You will have no reason to worry.”

The recording ended.

Dante stood in the rain, unable to speak.

The judge who had helped bury the case had known about the plan before Antonio was killed.

Marco lowered the recorder.

“Sir, this changes everything.”

Dante looked toward the distant lights of the city.

“Not everything.”

He slipped the ledger into a waterproof bag.

“We still need to find Richard. And we need the original records from Sterling Holdings.”

Vanessa stared at the recorder.

“My father knew.”

Dante looked at her.

“Now we find out whether he knew before or after the murder.”

A phone vibrated in Marco's pocket.

He answered, listened, and went rigid.

“Sir, Michael has contacted the estate.”

“What did he say?”

Marco lowered the phone.

“He wants the jewelry box returned.”

Dante's expression hardened.

“Tell him it's too late.”

May you like

Because the secret compartment was open.

And the people who had spent twelve years hiding the truth were finally afraid of what it contained.
