Chapter 7 - Blood at the Vineyard

The old vineyard lay beyond a winding road lined with cypress trees.
By the time Dante arrived, the sun had begun to set. Investigators had secured the main entrance, but Michael's car was still parked beside the abandoned wine cellar.
Dante entered with the lead investigator and Marco.
Michael stood in the cellar holding the metal case.
He looked almost disappointed.
“So Eleanor finally managed to turn you against me.”
Dante stopped several feet away.
“She didn't turn me against anyone. She showed me the evidence.”
Michael laughed.
“Evidence. You think a photograph and a few old papers explain what happened twelve years ago?”
“Then explain it yourself.”
Michael placed the case on a table.
“Your father was destroying the family.”
“He was preparing to expose you.”
“He was going to hand our business to the authorities. He didn't understand what would happen afterward.”
“He understood that you were selling information and stealing money.”
Michael's face twisted.
“You think he was innocent? Antonio built this organization with violence. He made enemies everywhere. I was the one keeping it alive.”
“By arranging his murder?”
Michael said nothing.
Dante took a step forward.
“Who was in the second car?”
Michael looked toward the door.
“The person who made sure the investigation went nowhere.”
“Judge Wexler?”
Michael's jaw tightened.
“Wexler was paid to control the proceedings. Your father was supposed to be frightened into surrendering the accounts. Richard arranged the meeting. I brought the second car.”
“And who shot him?”
Michael looked away.
“Richard was carrying the gun. But he swore he would never use it.”
Dante felt his heart pounding.
“Then who did?”
Michael closed his eyes.
“Wexler's driver. He was waiting in the second car. When Antonio refused to hand over the ledger, the driver stepped out and shot him.”
Dante struggled to breathe.
“And you let Richard take the blame.”
“I had no choice.”
“You had a choice. You chose yourself.”
Michael's face hardened.
“You don't understand what was at stake.”
“My father was your brother.”
“He was going to destroy us!”
“He was trying to stop you from destroying everyone else.”
For a moment, the only sound was the wind moving through the broken cellar windows.
Then Dante pointed at the metal case.
“What's inside?”
Michael hesitated.
“Your father's original ledger. The one he intended to give investigators.”
“Open it.”
Michael did.
Inside were bank records, signed instructions, and a small voice recorder.
Dante recognized his father's initials on the first document.
The ledger connected Michael and Richard to the payments, but it also contained records of transfers to Judge Wexler and several intermediaries.
The voice recorder held a final conversation between Antonio and Michael.
Antonio's voice was clear.
“You can still stop this, Michael. Give me the names, and we can take the evidence to the authorities together.”
Michael's reply came after a long pause.
“You should have stayed out of it.”
Then the recording ended.
Dante stared at the device.
His father had given his brother a chance to confess.
Michael had refused.
The lead investigator stepped forward.
“Michael Moretti, you're under arrest.”
Michael did not resist.
As the officers led him away, he turned toward Dante.
“Your father would be ashamed of what you've become.”
Dante held his gaze.
“Perhaps. But at least he would know the truth about what happened to him.”
Michael was taken into custody.
The metal case was secured as evidence, and the investigators confirmed that the recovered documents would support charges against Michael, Richard, and Judge Wexler.
Outside the vineyard, Dante stood beneath the darkening sky.
For twelve years, he had believed revenge would bring his father back to him.
It had not.
May you like
But the truth had given him something revenge never could.
The chance to stop the same lie from destroying another generation.
