Chapter 9 - The Truth About Maria Moretti

Antonio asked Sebastian to close the door.
For several moments, he said nothing.
“Your mother was not killed by Vincent,” he finally began. “But her death was connected to the life I chose.”
Sebastian felt his chest tighten.
“You told me she died of an illness.”
“She was ill. But I concealed how she became ill and why we couldn't save her.”
Antonio explained that Maria had discovered the family business was being used to distribute counterfeit medical supplies. She had threatened to expose the operation and demanded that Antonio leave the criminal world.
At the time, Antonio believed he could fix the problem without dismantling the organization.
He asked Maria to remain silent while he investigated.
She refused.
A few weeks later, she became seriously ill after receiving medication from a supplier linked to the counterfeit network.
The medicine had been improperly stored and was not what the label claimed.
The doctors tried to save her, but the damage was irreversible.
Antonio had suspected the supplier was responsible. He had even found evidence connecting the shipment to a company controlled by Vincent's associates.
But he had never brought the evidence to the authorities.
He had feared that an investigation would expose the entire organization and put Sebastian in danger.
“So you let everyone believe it was simply an illness,” Sebastian said.
Antonio lowered his head.
“Yes.”
Sebastian stood and walked to the window.
His mother's death had shaped every decision he had made. He had spent years believing that the world was cruel and that power was the only reliable defense against it.
Now he learned that the people who had promised to protect his family had helped create the danger.
“You knew the business had killed her.”
“I suspected it. I didn't have proof then.”
“And you kept going.”
Antonio's voice broke.
“Yes.”
Sebastian turned.
“You told me loyalty was everything. You taught me never to forgive betrayal. But you hid the truth about my mother, and you let the people responsible stay close to us.”
“I did.”
“Why should I trust you now?”
Antonio didn't answer immediately.
“Because you shouldn't have to trust my words. You should examine what I do from this moment forward.”
He handed Sebastian a second folder.
Inside were the original supplier contracts, medical reports, and correspondence showing that Maria had tried to warn him about the counterfeit shipments.
The documents also identified several people who had knowingly sold unsafe medical products.
Sebastian took the folder to the investigators.
The new evidence broadened the case against Vincent's network and helped authorities identify additional victims.
It also revealed that Maria had been trying to establish a charitable medical program before her death.
Sebastian decided to complete the work she had begun.
The Moretti Renewal Foundation would create a medical safety fund for families harmed by counterfeit products and establish scholarships in Maria's name.
He would not use her death to justify revenge.
He would use the truth to prevent another family from experiencing the same loss.
When he returned to Antonio, he found his father standing beside a photograph of Maria.
“I don't know if I can forgive you,” Sebastian said.
Antonio nodded.
“I don't expect you to.”
“But I won't let what happened to her happen to anyone else.”
Antonio closed his eyes.
“That is more than I deserve.”
“No. It's what she deserved.”
For a long time, they stood together in silence.

Their relationship would never return to what it had been.
But for the first time, it had a chance to become something honest.
