Chapter 8 - The Last Secret in Antonio's Ledger

With Vincent and Michael in custody, investigators began examining the Moretti organization's finances.
The results were worse than Sebastian had expected.
The theft extended beyond forty million dollars. Several legitimate businesses had been used to conceal payments to corrupt officials and contractors. Some properties had been transferred without Antonio's knowledge.
Sebastian could have used the family's influence to bury the investigation.
Instead, he instructed his attorneys to cooperate with authorities and separate the legitimate businesses from the criminal network.
Antonio supported the decision.
“The organization I built was supposed to protect our family,” he told Sebastian. “Somewhere along the way, we started protecting the organization instead.”
Sebastian looked at him.
“Then we end it.”
Antonio nodded.
“There will be consequences.”
“I know.”
The financial investigation uncovered one final mystery: a series of payments made to a company called Northbridge Medical Holdings.
The company had received money shortly before the explosion and had later paid for Antonio's rehabilitation.
At first, investigators suspected that Vincent had used the company to hide the costs of the attack.
But the records showed that the payments had been made by Antonio himself.
Sebastian confronted his father.
“Why were you paying Northbridge?”
Antonio sat quietly for a long time.
“Because I knew the organization was becoming dangerous. I had been working to establish a legitimate medical supply business that could employ people without forcing them into the life I had built.”
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“I planned to. I wanted to have the legal structure in place first.”
“Then the explosion happened.”
“Yes.”
Antonio opened a locked drawer and removed a thick folder.
Inside were business plans, employment contracts, and a proposal for a foundation that would fund rehabilitation programs for people trying to leave organized crime.
The foundation would also provide scholarships to children whose parents had been imprisoned or killed in gang violence.
Sebastian turned the pages slowly.
“You were planning all this before the attack.”
“For years.”
“Then why keep it secret?”
Antonio gave a tired smile.
“Because I was afraid you would reject it. You were proud of what we had built, and I thought you might believe I was abandoning the family.”
Sebastian sat down.
“I might have.”
“Perhaps. But I should have trusted you enough to let you decide.”
For the first time, father and son understood that they had made the same mistake for different reasons.
Antonio had hidden the truth to protect Sebastian.
Sebastian had hidden his doubts to prove he could lead.
Both had confused silence with strength.
They spent the next several days reviewing the plan.
Sebastian agreed to establish the Moretti Renewal Foundation, using lawful proceeds from the family's legitimate businesses. The foundation would fund job training, medical assistance, and education for vulnerable families.
The organization itself would be dismantled under legal oversight.
Some employees would face prosecution. Others would be offered a chance to cooperate with investigators and transition into legitimate work.
It would be complicated, expensive, and dangerous.
But Sebastian believed it was the only future worth building.
Then a message arrived from an unknown number.
Vincent wasn't the only person who wanted Antonio dead. Ask him about the night your mother disappeared.
Sebastian stared at the screen.
His mother, Maria Moretti, had died when he was eleven. He had been told that she had succumbed to an illness after months of treatment.
He had never questioned it.
Now he looked at his father.
“Dad, what happened to Mom?”
May you like
Antonio's face changed.
For the first time since their reunion, he looked truly afraid.
