Chapter 7 - The Witness in the Clinic

Luis Ortega was recovering in a small rehabilitation clinic outside Duluth.

He had spent months avoiding contact with anyone connected to the Moretti family. His injuries from the explosion had left him with limited mobility, and he feared that the people who had attacked Antonio would return to silence him.

When Sebastian entered his room, Luis immediately reached for the call button.

“Don't be afraid,” Sebastian said. “My father is alive.”

Luis stared at him.

“Antonio?”

Sebastian nodded.

For several seconds, Luis couldn't speak.

Then tears filled his eyes.

“I thought I failed him.”

“You saved his life.”

“I couldn't stop the explosion.”

“You weren't supposed to have to.”

Antonio entered the room with assistance from a nurse.

Luis struggled to sit upright.

“Boss.”

Antonio took his hand.

“You did enough.”

After a few minutes, Luis agreed to explain what he had witnessed.

He had noticed a suspicious vehicle near the garage on the evening of the explosion. The driver was Michael. Luis had seen him speaking with a man who carried a small equipment case.

Luis became suspicious and warned Antonio.

But before they could leave, the car exploded.

Luis had managed to pull Antonio from the wreckage and drive him to a clinic. He later discovered that Vincent's men were searching hospitals for survivors, so he arranged for Antonio to be transferred to a private facility under another name.

“Did you see who planted the explosives?” Sebastian asked.

Luis nodded.

“Michael did. I saw him near the car shortly before the blast. I also heard him speaking to Vincent on the phone.”

“What did he say?”

Luis closed his eyes, remembering.

“He said, 'It's done. By morning, everyone will believe he's dead.'”

Antonio lowered his head.

For years, he had protected Vincent, convincing himself that his brother's greed could be managed through loyalty and compromise.

Now he understood the cost of that mistake.

Luis agreed to give a formal statement.

The evidence from his testimony, combined with the financial records, surveillance logs, and funeral documents, strengthened the case against Vincent and Michael.

Vanessa also agreed to cooperate.

She admitted that she had helped Antonio escape and had concealed his survival from Sebastian. She had not ordered the explosion, but she had withheld evidence after Vincent threatened to frame her for the attack.

Her cooperation helped investigators recover messages showing that Vincent had arranged the false funeral and ordered the empty casket delivered to the mansion.

When Sebastian visited her at the mansion, she sat alone in the drawing room, no longer wearing the diamond ring he had given her.

“Are you going to have me arrested?” she asked.

“I won't interfere with the investigation.”

She nodded slowly.

“I deserve that.”

Sebastian looked at her.

“Why didn't you trust me?”

“Because I thought love meant protecting you from the truth. I thought if I could keep everything quiet, the danger would disappear.”

“And did it?”

“No.”

Vanessa looked down at her hands.

“I was selfish, too. I didn't want to lose you. I thought if your father returned, he would tell you what I had done. I was afraid you would never look at me the same way again.”

“You were right.”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I know.”

Sebastian took the engagement ring from the table.

“I can't marry you.”

Vanessa nodded.

“I understand.”

“I hope one day you find a way to live with what happened. But you can't build a marriage on secrets and call it love.”

She began to cry, but she did not ask him to stay.

Sebastian left the ring on the table and walked out.

For the first time in months, he felt that the truth had given him something the family fortune never could.

A clear path forward.
