Chapter 27 - The Poisoned Legacy

The room fell into an icy, suffocating silence.
"Trust no one, not even the Architect," I read the words aloud, stumbling back a step from the steel table. The air felt thin, like poison seeping into my lungs. "No. That's impossible. My father would never betray Vito. He built your family's empire! He spent his entire life in hiding, protecting those blueprints!"
Luca didn't answer immediately. He stared down at the photograph, his jaw working violently. The tarnished brass key with the number *777* sat between us like a loaded gun.
"My father didn't write lies, Clara," Luca said coldly, though the agony behind his words was palpable. "He was paranoid, ruthless, and calculating, but he never fabricated a warning on the back of his own war relics. Look at the photo. They weren't just business partners. They were a triumvirate. Vito, Arthur, and Victor Vance."
"If Victor Vance was alive thirty years ago after the supposed execution," I argued, my voice rising, "why did Julian Vance come after my father? Why torture the man who was supposedly on his father's side?!"
"Because Julian didn't know," a weak, gravelly voice rasped from the hospital bed.
We both snapped our heads toward the corner.
Arthur had pushed himself upright against the pillows, clutching his broken ribs with one pale hand. His face was gray, glistening with cold sweat, but his eyes were clear, dark, and filled with decades of unspeakable grief.
"Dad," I breathed, rushing to his side, but Luca raised an arm, barring my path.
The gesture was sharp, instinctive, and heartbreaking. Luca was no longer just my fiancé protecting me from external monsters. The mafia boss had returned, staring down an accused traitor within his own fortress.
"Talk, Arthur," Luca commanded, his voice dropping to the temperature of absolute zero. "Before I forget that you are Clara's father."
Arthur let out a shuddering breath that sounded like grinding glass. "Vito didn't execute Victor Vance because of business, Luca. He executed him because Victor wanted to weaponize the underground grid. In the late eighties, the city commissioned a secondary fallout shelter system beneath the commercial banking district. A network of high-security vaults connected to the subway tunnels."
Arthur coughed, wincing in agony before continuing. "We three built it. Vito provided the capital and political muscle. I designed the structural grid. Victor... Victor was the federal liaison. When the project was completed, Victor realized that whoever held the master access codes could shut down the entire city's power, water, and financial routing at the push of a button."
"A black-box extortion vault," Luca realized, his eyes narrowing.
"Victor wanted to sell it to the highest bidder—foreign syndicates, cartels, anyone with fifty million in gold," Arthur whispered. "Vito refused. There was a shootout at the construction docks. Victor was shot three times and fell into the river. We assumed he drowned. But Vito... Vito always suspected Victor survived. And he suspected I had helped him escape."

"Did you?" Luca stepped forward, towering over the bed, his Kimber resting loose but deadly in his holster. "Did you let my father's greatest enemy live, Arthur?"
"I gave Victor the key to Vault 777," Arthur confessed, tears leaking from his bruised eyes as he looked up at Luca. "Not to save him. But to trap him."
