Chapter 12 - The Sealed Blueprint

Within ten minutes, the grand ballroom was emptied. The trusted guests were discreetly escorted off the estate grounds by heavily armed escorts, and the warm glow of the wedding chandeliers was swapped for the harsh, cold fluorescent lights of Luca’s private basement war room.

My father sat at the center of the mahogany conference table, his weathered hands trembling as he stared down at the cracked pocket watch.

"Dad," I said gently, kneeling beside his chair and placing my hand over his. "Do you recognize this?"

Arthur swallowed hard, his eyes clouded with decades of repressed terror. "It belonged to Lorenzo Valenti," he rasped, his voice barely above a whisper.

Luca, who was leaning over the table studying the note, snapped his head up. "Valenti? Lorenzo died thirty-four years ago in the warehouse fire on the river. My father wiped that bloodline out before I was even born."

"He thought he did," Arthur said, shaking his head slowly. "Vito believed Lorenzo died in that fire. But before the fire happened, Lorenzo hired me to design something. A vault. A sanctuary deep beneath the foundations of the old Chicago Meatpacking plant."

"Pillar Seven," Luca murmured, his dark eyes narrowing into dangerous slits. "The warehouse property on the south branch of the river. The syndicate owns that land, but the warehouse was condemned decades ago."

"Vito knew about the vault, didn't he?" I asked, looking between my father and my husband.

Arthur nodded miserably. "Vito didn't kill Lorenzo for power, Clara. Lorenzo had stolen something—a ledger containing the real identities of the founding families, offshore trust account keys, and blackmail material that could bring down every political and criminal dynasty in the Midwest. When Vito raided the warehouse, Lorenzo vanished into the river. His body was never recovered. Vito told me to seal Pillar Seven with sixty tons of reinforced concrete and swear never to speak of it."

"And the Silver Star in my father's jacket?" Luca asked, stepping around the table until he stood towering over Arthur. "How does that tie into this?"

"The medal wasn't just a military decoration," Arthur confessed, looking Luca straight in the eye. "Look at the ribbon clasp on that medal, Luca. Vito had me engrave a four-digit mechanical sequence on the underside of the silver star. It's the combination to the inner vault door beneath Pillar Seven."

Luca’s hand unconsciously drifted to his chest, where the medal had rested safely in his breast pocket during our vows.

Suddenly, a loud siren blared through the underground bunker. Red tactical lights began flashing across the ceiling.

Dominic slammed through the door, his submachine gun already drawn. "Boss! Motion sensors just tripped at the perimeter of the south river lot! Someone is breaching the old meatpacking plant right now!"
