Chapter 4 - The Whispers in the Dark

Night fell over the Long Island estate like a heavy velvet shroud. Outside, the Atlantic surf beat relentlessly against the jagged cliffside, but inside the east wing, the silence was suffocating. Clara Vance lay awake in the guest suite adjacent to the nursery, staring at the high, ornate ceiling. Every creak of the floorboards set her heart racing.

Around 2:00 AM, a muffled whimper sliced through the quiet. Clara threw off her covers and hurried through the adjoining door.

Leo was thrashing in his bed, tangled in silk sheets, his skin flushed and drenched in cold sweat. "No, Mama! Red... too much red!" the child gasped, clawing at the empty air.

Clara immediately scooped him into her arms, sinking onto the plush rug and rocking him with rhythmic, gentle pressure. "Shh, little bird. It's Clara. You're home, you're safe," she whispered, humming a low Vermont lullaby against his temple.

Gradually, Leo's tremors subsided, his small fingers clinging to Clara’s collar until his breathing evened out into deep slumber.

When Clara looked up, she froze. Rico stood in the doorway, framed by the dim corridor light. His shirt was unbuttoned halfway down his chest, his dark eyes shadowed with profound exhaustion. For the first time, Clara noticed a deep, jagged scar running across his left collarbone—a souvenir from the ambush that took his wife.

"He hasn't slept through a storm since Elena died," Rico said quietly, his deep voice scraping the quiet.

"Children carry violence in their bodies until someone shows them it's over," Clara replied softly, laying Leo back into his bed and pulling the duvet to his chin.

Rico stepped into the room, hesitating before glancing down at his son. When he turned to Clara, his usual ruthless demeanor was momentarily cracked. "You don't fear me, Miss Vance. Every person who steps through these gates calculates how to stay alive around me. You just look at me like an obstacle."

"Fear is a luxury for people who have something left to lose, Mr. Moretti," Clara said evenly.

A faint, bitter smirk touched Rico's lips. "Then perhaps we are more alike than I thought."
