Chapter 9 - The Day the Mafia Boss Chose Mercy

At 8:12 the following morning, Dante Falcone received a video of a five-year-old boy sitting in a chair.

The boy wasn't crying.

That made it worse.

He held a stuffed dinosaur against his chest and stared at someone beyond the camera.

A man's voice spoke.

"Hello, Dante."

Dante went completely still.

"Vittorio."

The camera shifted.

His uncle appeared.

Silver hair.

Gray suit.

Calm smile.

The same gentleman who had brought Sophia a stuffed rabbit.

"You're making this unnecessarily difficult, son."

Dante's jaw tightened.

"Where's the boy?"

"Safe, for now."

"If you touch him—"

"Don't make threats you aren't prepared to carry out."

Vittorio smiled.

"You've always been emotional where family is concerned. Your father had the same weakness."

Dante leaned toward the screen.

"What do you want?"

"The documents. Every copy. And Gabriel."

"Where is he?"

Vittorio's smile faded.

"Don't insult me. You know he's alive."

Dante remained silent.

"Bring him to the old lakeside warehouse at four o'clock. Come alone. If you involve the police, Matteo disappears."

The video ended.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Then Dante threw his phone across the room.

It struck the wall and shattered.

I flinched.

He stood motionless, breathing hard.

Marco approached.

"Boss—"

"Find Gabriel."

"We're trying."

"Try harder."

I stepped forward.

"Dante."

He turned.

His eyes were wild with grief and anger.

"Not now, Rosa."

"Look at me."

He stared.

I held his gaze.

"Matteo needs you to think."

His expression tightened.

"Vittorio has my nephew."

"I know."

"He's five years old."

"I know."

Dante looked away.

I moved closer.

"If you go there angry, you'll give your uncle exactly what he wants."

He said nothing.

"You're not the man you were eighteen months ago."

His eyes returned to mine.

"How would you know?"

"Because yesterday, you could have threatened Daniel. You didn't. You could have forced Evelyn to give you everything she had. You didn't."

I swallowed.

"You listened."

Dante looked at the floor.

"Listening won't save Matteo."

"No," I said. "But thinking might."

Marco cleared his throat.

"We may have another option."

Dante turned.

"What?"

"We've been working with Detective Lena Brooks. She has a warrant request underway based on the financial records, the kidnapping evidence, and the attempted break-in."

Dante frowned.

"Brooks?"

"She investigated Carmela's death before the case was reassigned."

"Why wasn't I told?"

"Because we weren't sure she could be trusted."

"And now?"

"She's the one who located Matteo's foster family. She's also been investigating Vittorio independently."

Dante looked at me.

I nodded.

"Call her."

By noon, the conference room at the Milwaukee medical office had become an improvised command center.

Detective Brooks arrived with two investigators and a federal agent.

She was in her early forties, with tired eyes and the direct manner of someone who didn't care how wealthy the people around her were.

"Dante Falcone," she said.

"Detective."

"I've wanted to question you for a long time."

"Get my nephew back, and I'll answer your questions."

She studied him.

"That's a start."

The next three hours were the longest of my life.

Investigators examined the video.

Marco provided security records.

Evelyn supplied medical documents and Carmela's files.

Daniel gave a formal statement about Isabella Romano.

And Dante did something I never expected.

He handed over financial records implicating his own companies in illegal transactions.

Detective Brooks looked at him.

"You understand these documents could expose you to prosecution?"

"Yes."

"Even if your uncle authorized the transfers?"

"Yes."

She watched him carefully.

"Why are you cooperating?"

Dante looked toward a photograph of Matteo.

"Because a child is missing."

For the first time, Brooks seemed to believe him.

At 2:40, Marco received a message.

He read it.

Then looked at Dante.

"Boss. We found Gabriel."

Dante stood.

"Where?"

"Outside the building."

I turned.

A man stood beyond the glass entrance.

Dark hair.

A scar along his jaw.

A small bird tattoo on his wrist.

Gabriel Falcone.

Dante walked toward him.

For a moment, the brothers simply stared at each other.

Eleven years.

Eleven years of funerals, lies, and stolen birthdays.

Gabriel's eyes filled.

"Dante."

Dante stopped three feet away.

"Why didn't you come home?"

Gabriel swallowed.

"I thought you tried to kill me."

Dante's face twisted.

"You believed him?"

Gabriel lowered his head.

"I was scared."

"You're my brother."

"I know."

Dante took another step.

Then, instead of striking him, he pulled Gabriel into his arms.

Gabriel broke.

He clung to his older brother and sobbed like the young man he'd been when everything was stolen from him.

Dante held him.

Neither spoke.

I looked away, tears burning my eyes.

When they finally separated, Gabriel wiped his face.

"Matteo?"

Dante nodded.

"Vittorio has him."

Gabriel's expression changed.

"Then I'll go."

"No."

"He's my son."

"And you're my brother."

Dante gripped his shoulder.

"We're bringing him home together."

At 3:57, Dante arrived at the lakeside warehouse.

Gabriel stood beside him.

Both wore concealed recording equipment supplied by the investigators.

Detective Brooks and her team waited outside the immediate area, positioned to intervene if the child was in danger.

I remained at the medical office with Evelyn and Daniel, watching the limited video feed.

Sophia was still safe with Teresa.

My hands wouldn't stop shaking.

Inside the warehouse, Vittorio waited beside a folding table.

Matteo sat nearby, holding his dinosaur.

When he saw Gabriel, his face lit up.

"Daddy!"

Gabriel took an involuntary step forward.

Vittorio raised a hand.

"Not yet."

Dante's voice was calm.

"Let him go."

"Documents first."

Dante placed a drive on the table.

Vittorio smiled.

"Good boy."

Gabriel stared at his uncle.

"Why?"

Vittorio looked almost offended.

"Why what?"

"You destroyed our family."

Vittorio sighed.

"I preserved it."

"You tried to kill me."

"I gave you chances to disappear."

"And Carmela?"

Vittorio's expression hardened.

"Your sister-in-law asked too many questions."

Dante went still.

"Did you order her murder?"

Vittorio looked at him.

"She could have walked away."

The words hung in the air.

Then Vittorio continued.

"But she insisted on protecting that woman and the boy."

Gabriel moved forward.

"You murdered her."

Vittorio shrugged.

"She made her choice."

I heard Dante inhale sharply through the feed.

Then he said something I would remember for the rest of my life.

"No. You made yours."

Vittorio reached inside his jacket.

Everything happened at once.

Dante lunged toward Matteo.

Gabriel grabbed his uncle's arm.

A gunshot cracked through the warehouse.

I screamed.

The video shook.

Then went dark.

For several terrible seconds, I heard nothing.

No voices.

No movement.

Just static.

Then a child's voice cried:

"Daddy?"

May you like

And somewhere beyond the camera, Dante Falcone whispered:

"Not another child. Not this time."
