Chapter 8 - The Children Who Were Never Meant to Exist

The photograph on the flash drive showed a little boy standing beside a hospital bed.

He couldn't have been older than four.

He had dark hair, serious eyes, and a tiny scar beneath his chin.

Dante stared at the screen.

"Who is he?"

Daniel didn't answer immediately.

Evelyn looked down.

And I knew whatever came next would hurt.

"His name is Matteo," she said.

Dante's eyes narrowed.

"Matteo who?"

"Matteo Falcone."

Silence.

Then Dante laughed once.

A bitter, disbelieving sound.

"That's impossible."

Evelyn opened another file.

A birth certificate appeared.

The child's mother was listed as Isabella Romano.

His father was Gabriel Falcone.

Dante sat down.

"My brother has a son?"

Evelyn nodded.

"Matteo is five now."

"Where is he?"

"Safe."

"With Gabriel?"

"No."

Dante looked up.

"Why not?"

Daniel answered.

"Because Vittorio has been searching for him since the night Carmela died."

I felt sick.

"Why would he want a child?"

Evelyn pulled out a chair.

"Because Matteo's existence threatens the way Vittorio gained control of the family assets."

Dante stared at her.

"Explain."

She took a breath.

"Your grandfather established a family trust decades ago. The controlling shares in several legitimate Falcone companies pass to his descendants under specific conditions. Vittorio has managed the trust since your father's death."

"I know."

"What you don't know is that Gabriel never surrendered his beneficiary rights. When he disappeared, Vittorio used a fraudulent death declaration to consolidate control."

Dante's expression darkened.

"And Matteo?"

"Gabriel's son is another beneficiary. Vittorio couldn't legally eliminate his interest without exposing the fraud."

"Then why not simply hide the child?"

"That's what Gabriel tried to do."

Daniel stepped forward.

"Gabriel discovered the fraudulent transfers eleven years ago. He planned to testify against Vittorio. Before he could, someone arranged the warehouse explosion."

Dante's face went pale.

"Vittorio?"

"We have records connecting one of Vittorio's companies to the warehouse lease and the men who prepared the site," Evelyn said. "But we still need testimony to establish who ordered it."

Dante looked at the screen.

"And Gabriel survived."

Daniel nodded.

"He escaped through a drainage tunnel. He was badly burned and spent months recovering under another name."

"Why didn't he contact me?"

"Because he believed Vittorio had convinced you to help arrange the explosion."

Dante recoiled.

"What?"

Daniel lowered his voice.

"Vittorio showed Gabriel documents bearing your signature."

"Forged."

"We believe so."

Dante stood.

"Gabriel should have known."

"Maybe," Evelyn replied. "But he was twenty-four, terrified, and had just watched two men die."

I watched Dante struggle with the realization that his brother had spent eleven years believing he was a murderer.

Then another thought struck me.

"What does this have to do with Sophia?"

Evelyn looked at Daniel.

He closed his eyes.

"Rosa, before I disappeared, I was assigned to transport a patient from a private hospital."

"Who?"

"A woman named Isabella Romano."

I frowned.

"Matteo's mother?"

He nodded.

"She had suffered serious injuries in a car crash. At the hospital, I overheard a man ordering the staff to falsify her death certificate."

I stared.

"Vittorio?"

"His security chief."

Daniel swallowed.

"I reported it. Two days later, someone followed me home."

My skin went cold.

"That's when you started acting strangely."

"Yes."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because I thought I could protect you by keeping you out of it."

Anger rose in my chest.

"You were wrong."

"I know."

"You let me believe you'd abandoned us."

His eyes filled.

"I thought if they believed I'd left you, they'd stop watching you."

"And did they?"

He couldn't answer.

I stepped away.

"You didn't protect me, Daniel. You made the decision for me."

He lowered his head.

"I know."

For a moment, I wanted to scream.

I wanted to hit him.

I wanted the three years of loneliness returned.

Instead, I thought of Sophia asking why other children had daddies at preschool.

And I began to cry.

Daniel moved toward me.

I raised a hand.

"Don't."

He stopped.

Dante stood quietly beside the window.

He didn't interfere.

For that, I was grateful.

After a long silence, Evelyn continued.

"Carmela found Isabella alive at the hospital. She helped move her to another facility and began investigating the trust fraud."

Dante looked at her.

"That's why she was killed."

"We believe so."

"And you were protecting the evidence?"

"Yes."

"Then why wait eighteen months?"

Evelyn's expression grew troubled.

"Because we didn't have enough to prove the entire conspiracy. And because the person who promised to help us disappeared."

"Who?"

"Gabriel."

Dante frowned.

"He's alive. He was inside my estate."

"Yes," Evelyn said. "But he stopped communicating with us six weeks ago."

"Then who arranged for Sophia to find the music box?"

Daniel looked at me.

"Gabriel did. He contacted me briefly, said he had discovered where Carmela hid the original warning, and asked me to get it to Dante."

I stared.

"You let him approach my daughter?"

Daniel's face tightened.

"I told him not to involve her."

"But he did."

"Yes."

"And you didn't warn me?"

"I didn't know he'd use Sophia until afterward."

I stepped back.

"You're telling me the man I married allowed a stranger to involve our three-year-old in a murder investigation?"

"Rosa—"

"No."

My voice shook.

"You don't get to say my name like that. Not after what you've done."

Daniel looked devastated.

But I couldn't comfort him.

Not anymore.

Dante stepped between us—not threateningly, but firmly.

"Enough for tonight."

Daniel nodded.

Then his phone rang.

He glanced at the screen.

His face drained of color.

"What is it?" Evelyn asked.

Daniel answered.

Listened.

And whispered, "No."

Dante moved closer.

"Daniel?"

He ended the call.

"Matteo's foster family."

Evelyn stood.

"What happened?"

Daniel looked at Dante.

"Someone took him from school this afternoon."

The room went silent.

Then Daniel added:

"The person who signed him out used Carmela Falcone's name."
