Chapter 1 - The Little Girl Who Made the Devil Laugh

"My three-year-old daughter spent two weeks secretly mocking Dante Falcone, the most feared Mafia boss in the estate, copying his cold stare and intimidating walk while terrified servants pretended not to notice. When he finally caught her, I thought I’d be fired on the spot, but Sophia looked straight at him and said six innocent words that made the ruthless man do something nobody had seen since his wife was murdered.
My name is Rosa Bennett, and working inside the Falcone estate taught me one rule.
Silence keeps you alive.
Every afternoon at exactly four, the mansion changed.
Vacuum cleaners stopped. Carts disappeared. Conversations died.
Then Dante Falcone walked down the marble corridor.
He was enormous, broad-shouldered and heavily muscled, with dark tattoos covering his arms beneath rolled sleeves. His expression never changed.
Nobody approached him.
Nobody spoke.
Especially when he passed the locked sitting room that once belonged to his wife, Carmela.
Then Sophia ruined everything.
Childcare cost almost as much as my rent, so when my neighbor couldn't babysit, I brought my daughter to work.
The first afternoon, Sophia watched Dante pass.
Then she stood.
He clasped his hands behind his back.
She copied him.
He straightened his shoulders.
So did she.
Then Dante frowned.
Sophia scrunched her sweet little face into the most ridiculous scowl I had ever seen.
“Sophia!” I hissed.
She pointed after him.
“I walk like Mister.”
“No, sweetheart.”
“He walks grumpy.”
I nearly died.
The next day, she did it again.
Then again.
Soon the entire staff knew.
For two weeks, my tiny daughter marched seven steps behind Chicago’s most intimidating Mafia boss.
When Dante stopped, Sophia stopped.
When he tilted his head, she tilted hers.
Nobody dared warn him.
On the fourteenth afternoon, Dante suddenly froze.
My blood turned cold.
Slowly, he turned around.
Sophia stood twelve feet behind him, tiny hands clasped behind her back.
“Mr. Falcone,” I gasped. “Please forgive her. She doesn’t understand.”
Dante raised one tattooed hand.
I stopped speaking.
“Come here,” he told Sophia.
She marched toward him using his exact stiff walk.
One guard coughed to hide a laugh.
Dante stared down at her.
“Why do you keep walking like me?”
Sophia looked up with clear, innocent eyes.
“Because you look lonely.”
Silence swallowed the hallway.
Dante’s gaze shifted toward Carmela’s locked room.
Then everything clicked.
Carmela had died eighteen months earlier during an ambush, taking a bullet meant for her husband.
She died at four o’clock.
This daily walk wasn’t a ritual.
It was grief.
Sophia stepped closer.
“You walk by yourself every day,” she whispered. “So I walk with you.”
Dante Falcone laughed.
A real laugh.
Every servant stared.
Sophia smiled proudly.
“There.”
Dante blinked.
“There what?”
“Your sad face went away.”
Then my daughter lifted both arms.
“Hug?”
Dante stared at her.
This was a man who hadn’t allowed anyone near him since Carmela died.
Slowly, the most feared man I knew bent down.
But before he could lift Sophia, she touched his cheek and whispered:
“She told me you needed one.”
Dante went completely still.

“So did the pretty lady in your locked room.”
