Chapter 9 - The Last Lie of the Moretti Family

For forty-eight hours, Chicago seemed to hold its breath.
Dante closed the estate.
Every entrance to Bellhaven was guarded. Every family account was frozen pending Margaret's investigation. Adrian disappeared from custody before he could be questioned.
And Vanessa remained missing.
Elena stayed in a private maternity clinic under a different name.
She was twenty weeks pregnant now.
Her doctor assured her that the stress had not harmed the baby, but Elena knew the truth.
Her child was already being born into a war.
On the third morning, Dante arrived carrying a small envelope.
"I found Adrian."
Elena looked up.
"Where?"
"At the old cemetery."
"Why?"
"He was visiting your mother's grave."
Elena felt her heart tighten.
"Take me there."
Dante hesitated.
"You're not going anywhere near him."
"Then bring him here."
An hour later, Adrian Bell entered the clinic's private conference room under guard.
He looked exhausted.
Dante stood opposite him.
"Tell her everything."
Adrian glanced at Elena.
"Your mother saved my life."
Elena said nothing.
"Your father was not the man listed on your birth certificate. He was a Moretti accountant named Thomas Bell. He discovered that the family had been stealing from the trust for years."
"Why did he hide?"
"Because your grandfather threatened him. Your mother helped him disappear."
Elena frowned.
"Then who was the man who raised me?"
"Your stepfather. He knew the truth, but he loved your mother enough to keep it from you."
"Did my mother have another child?"
Adrian nodded.
"Yes."
"Who?"
"Me."
Silence.
Dante stared at him.
"You're saying you're Elena's brother?"
Adrian looked at him.
"And your half brother."
Elena struggled to understand.
"Then the baby in the photograph—"
"Was my son."
The room seemed to tilt.
Adrian explained that his wife had died during childbirth. The baby had been taken into protective custody after a failed attempt to steal the trust documents.
Vanessa had discovered the child and taken him.
"Why would she do that?" Elena asked.
"Because she believed the baby was the final beneficiary."
Dante's jaw tightened.
"Where is he now?"
"I don't know."
Elena looked at Adrian.
"Then why did you come to the cemetery?"
"Because your mother left a message there. She said if the family ever began fighting over the children, I should open the stone beneath her name."
Dante looked at him.
"There's a compartment?"
Adrian nodded.
They went to the cemetery that afternoon.
The cemetery was nearly empty. Wind moved through the bare trees, and the sky hung low and gray over the rows of marble.
At the base of Elena's mother's grave, a small metal plate had been concealed beneath the flower arrangement.
Adrian removed it.
Inside was a sealed envelope and a photograph.
The photograph showed three children standing together.
Two boys and a girl.
Elena recognized the girl as Vanessa.
The younger boy was Adrian.
The older boy was Dante.
But on the back, her mother had written:
These are the children I could not save. The fourth is the one who will save them.
Dante unfolded the letter.
It was addressed to Elena.
My darling girl,
If you have found this, then the family has finally uncovered the truth. I am sorry that I could not protect you from it.
The Moretti name is not a bloodline. It is a promise. Your grandfather built an empire on the belief that family meant ownership. I wanted you to learn that love means the opposite.
There is one person I never trusted with the truth. Not Dante. Not Vanessa. Not Adrian.
The man who signed your marriage certificate.
Elena stared at the final line.
Her wedding certificate had been signed by a witness.
A family lawyer named Robert Hale.
He had attended the ceremony, given a speech, and congratulated them.
Dante took the letter.
"Robert Hale has been dead for six years."
Adrian shook his head.
"No. He isn't."
A car pulled up behind them.
A man stepped out.
He was older, gray-haired, and dressed in a dark suit.
Elena recognized him immediately.
Robert Hale.
He walked toward them with a calm smile.
"Hello, Elena."
Dante moved in front of his wife.
"You should be dead."
Robert looked at him.
"That was the plan."
He turned to Elena.
"Your mother left you a great deal of money. But she also left you a choice."
"What choice?"
Robert smiled.
"Whether to protect your unborn child or finally learn who your real father was."
Elena felt her breath catch.
Robert held out a second envelope.
The name written across it was not Moretti.
May you like
It was the name of a man who had been sitting at Bellhaven's dinner table the night she walked away.
Uncle Rocco.
