Chapter 10 - The Family She Chose

The revelation about Rocco Moretti changed everything.

He had been the quiet uncle at the dinner table, the man who studied his plate while Dante ordered his pregnant wife to leave.

He had never raised his voice.

He had never challenged Dante.

And he had never once asked Elena whether she was all right.

Now Robert Hale stood in the cemetery, holding a document that suggested Rocco was Elena's biological father.

Dante looked as though someone had struck him.

"That's impossible."

Robert opened the envelope.

"Your grandfather arranged the adoption. Rocco was young. Elena's mother was already married. The family decided the child would be raised outside Bellhaven."

Elena stared at him.

"Why would my mother let him stay in the family?"

"Because she believed he would protect you."

"Instead, he watched me get humiliated."

Robert's expression softened.

"People make terrible choices when they're afraid."

Dante stepped closer.

"Where is Rocco now?"

"At Bellhaven."

Dante turned to his security chief.

"Bring him here."

"No," Elena said.

Everyone looked at her.

"I'm going to Bellhaven."

Dante shook his head.

"You're not walking into that house again."

"Then come with me."

He studied her face.

Finally, he nodded.

They arrived at Bellhaven shortly before sunset.

The estate looked exactly as it had on the night Elena left. The fountain remained dry. The candles were absent from the dining room. The guest house stood dark at the edge of the orchard.

Rocco was waiting in the library.

He rose when Elena entered.

For a long moment, neither spoke.

Then he said, "You look like your mother."

Elena's eyes filled.

"Are you my father?"

Rocco looked at Dante.

"Yes."

Dante's jaw tightened.

"Why didn't you tell her?"

"Because I was told it would destroy her."

"Who told you?"

"Your father."

Rocco explained that Elena's mother had become pregnant while she was still married to her first husband. The family had arranged for the child to be raised elsewhere, but Rocco had never stopped watching over her.

He had paid for her education.

He had quietly covered her mother's medical bills.

He had even helped arrange the introduction that brought her into Dante's life.

Elena listened without interrupting.

"Did you know about the trust?"

"Yes."

"Did you know Vanessa was my sister?"

"Not until recently."

"Did you know she was moving into the guest house?"

Rocco lowered his head.

"Yes."

"Then why didn't you stop it?"

"Because she threatened to expose the truth about your mother."

Elena stepped closer.

"You could have told me."

"I was afraid."

"So was I."

Her voice cracked.

"But I was the one who had to leave."

Rocco began to cry.

For the first time in years, the powerful Moretti family patriarch looked like an ordinary old man.

"I am sorry."

Elena wanted to hate him.

She wanted to tell him that an apology could not give her back the years she had spent believing she was unwanted.

But she also remembered her mother's letter.

Love means the opposite of ownership.

"I don't know if I can forgive you," she said.

Rocco nodded.

"I understand."

"But I won't let you hurt my child."

"Never."

Dante stood behind her, silent.

Elena turned toward him.

"And you."

He looked up.

"I know I cannot ask you to come home. I know I cannot undo what happened at that table."

"No, you can't."

"I have spent my entire life believing that if I controlled every situation, nobody could hurt the people I loved."

Elena's expression softened.

"That's not love, Dante."

"I know."

He reached into his coat and placed a document on the desk.

It was the amended Moretti trust agreement.

He had signed away his personal claim to the controlling interest, transferring administration to an independent trustee until their child reached adulthood.

Elena looked at the signature.

"You did this?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because our child deserves to inherit a family, not a battlefield."

For the first time since leaving Bellhaven, Elena took his hand.

Not because everything was forgiven.

Because she wanted to believe something could still be repaired.

Three months later, their daughter was born.

They named her Sophia.

Dante held her carefully in the hospital room, his large hands trembling as the tiny girl wrapped her fingers around his thumb.

Elena watched him.

"She's beautiful," he whispered.

"She is."

He looked at his wife.

"Thank you for letting me be here."

"Don't make promises you can't keep."

"I won't."

And this time, he didn't ask her to return to Bellhaven.

Instead, he bought a quiet house near the lake, far from the family estate and its long corridors, locked rooms, and inherited secrets.

Elena agreed to visit Bellhaven occasionally.

She did not move back.

Vanessa was eventually found in Boston. She had left the baby with a trusted nurse and disappeared after sending the family a final letter.

The child was safely reunited with Adrian.

Rocco stepped down from his position in the family organization. Celia remained close to Elena and became Sophia's godmother.

Dante began rebuilding the parts of his life he had spent years neglecting.

He learned to attend doctor's appointments without bringing security men into the waiting room.

He learned to ask before making decisions.

And he learned that sometimes the most difficult thing a powerful man could do was accept that he was not entitled to forgiveness.

On Sophia's first birthday, Elena stood in the garden while Dante carried their daughter toward the small table decorated with white flowers.

For a moment, she remembered the dinner at Bellhaven.

The candles.

The silver.

The ultrasound.

The words that had ended her marriage.

If you cannot accept her, get out.

She had left.

And somehow, that had been the beginning of finding herself.

Dante approached and placed Sophia in her arms.

"Happy birthday, sweetheart," he whispered.

Elena kissed their daughter's forehead.

Then her phone vibrated.

An unknown number.

A message appeared.

Your mother never told you the truth about the fourth child.

Elena's smile disappeared.

A second message followed.

Sophia is not the only Moretti heir. And the person who knows where the other child is has been living inside Bellhaven all along.

Elena looked across the garden.

Celia was standing near the gate.

She was watching them.

And when their eyes met, Celia slowly lowered her phone.

For the first time in her life, Elena wondered whether the woman who had promised to protect her had been hiding the biggest secret of all.

She looked down at Sophia.

Then at Dante.

Their family had survived the first secret.

May you like

But the next one might destroy everything they had rebuilt.

THE END — FOR NOW.
