Chapter 7 - The Baby No One Was Supposed to Find

Elena spent the night at Margaret's office.

Dante called seventeen times.

She answered none of them.

At dawn, Celia arrived carrying a small wooden box.

"I should have given you this years ago."

Inside were three photographs, a hospital bracelet, and a letter written in her mother's handwriting.

Elena picked up the bracelet.

The name was almost unreadable.

Baby Girl — November 18.

"Who was this?"

Celia sat beside her.

"Your mother gave birth to twins."

Elena looked up.

"What?"

"A boy and a girl. The boy was taken from the hospital after your mother became ill. Your mother was told he had died. The girl was placed with another family."

"Where?"

Celia shook her head.

"Your mother never found out."

Elena looked at the bracelet again.

"Was I the girl?"

"No. You were born years later."

"Then whose child was I?"

Celia's eyes filled.

"Your mother's."

Elena stared at her.

"Then why did you say she had twins?"

"Because the hospital records were manipulated. Your mother believed the boy had died. She never knew the girl survived."

Elena felt her head spin.

"Who raised her?"

Celia opened the letter.

A name appeared.

Vanessa Sarto.

Elena could not speak.

"Vanessa was adopted?"

"Not exactly. Her mother worked at the hospital. She took the baby home after the birth and raised her as her own."

"Why?"

"Because someone paid her."

Elena looked at the photograph of the three women outside Bellhaven.

Her mother.

Dante's father.

Vanessa's father.

Now the pieces were beginning to fit, but the picture was more disturbing than she had imagined.

"Who paid her?"

Celia's voice broke.

"Your grandfather."

Elena stood.

"Why would he take his own granddaughter?"

"To protect the family."

"From what?"

Celia looked toward the window.

"Your mother's first husband was not the only man who knew about the trust. Your grandfather believed the child would become a target. He arranged for her to disappear."

"Then why did Vanessa come back?"

"Because she found out who she was."

Elena sank into the chair.

The woman who had sat across from her at dinner, who had smiled and thanked the family for sheltering her, was her mother's daughter.

Her sister.

A knock sounded.

Dante entered.

He looked exhausted.

"Elena, we need to talk."

She showed him the bracelet.

"Did you know?"

He stared at it.

"No."

"Did you know Vanessa was my mother's daughter?"

"No."

"Did you know she was adopted?"

He looked toward Celia.

"Some of it."

Elena laughed bitterly.

"Of course you did."

"I was told she was connected to the trust. I wasn't told why."

"How convenient."

Dante moved closer.

"Elena, I never knew she was your sister."

"Did you know she wanted my child?"

He stopped.

That was enough.

Elena looked at him.

"What did you promise her?"

"Nothing."

"Then why did you agree to let her live at Bellhaven?"

"Because she had information about the ledger."

"And because you believed she could help you control the trust."

Dante did not deny it.

Elena looked away.

"You keep saying you love me, but every decision you make is about power."

"That's not true."

"Then tell me one thing you've done that wasn't about protecting the Moretti name."

He reached for her hand.

She stepped back.

"I want you to leave."

His face tightened.

"Elena—"

"Please."

He stood motionless for a long moment.

Then he nodded.

Before he reached the door, his phone rang.

He answered.

"What?"

His expression changed.

"Where?"

Elena watched him listen.

Then he looked at her.

"Vanessa is gone."

"What?"

"She left Bellhaven twenty minutes ago."

"Where is she going?"

Dante lowered the phone.

"She took the family vault key."

Elena looked down at the brass key in her hand.

"No," she whispered.

Dante frowned.

"What?"

"The key Vanessa took isn't the real one."

She opened the wooden box and removed a second key.

Her mother's handwriting was engraved along its side.

For the child who remembers.

Dante stared.

Then Elena's phone rang.

A video message had arrived from Vanessa.

It showed a hospital nursery.

A newborn baby lay beneath a white blanket.

And beside the crib stood Vanessa, holding a document.

She looked directly into the camera.

"Congratulations, Elena. You thought you were the only one carrying a secret. But your mother left two children behind, and I have finally found the third."
