Chapter 4

Before the Bride could mount another hysterical defense, the heavy oak doors at the back of the ballroom swung open once more. The sound was deliberate, controlled, unlike Caroline’s sudden intrusion. The crowd, already pushed to the edge of their nerves, parted like a wave.

Walking through the center aisle was a man in his forties. He moved with a distinct, military precision, his dark grey suit impeccably tailored, his black shirt worn without a tie. He possessed a rugged, weathered face framed by a thick, dark beard. His eyes were cold, sweeping the room to calculate every exit, every security guard, and every threat. In his right hand, gripped tightly by a brass handle, was a heavy brown leather briefcase.

"Stop right there!" a massive security guard barked, stepping into the aisle to block the man's path. "The venue is closed. You need to turn around."

The Briefcase Man did not slow his pace. "I wouldn't do that, friend," he said, his voice a low, gravelly baritone that commanded instant obedience. "Unless you want to be named as an accessory to attempted murder on federal documents. Step aside."

The guard hesitated, looking toward the head table for instruction, but the Father was too busy staring at Caroline’s scarred neck to notice. The Briefcase Man stepped smoothly around the guard, closing the distance until he stood shoulder-to-shoulder with Caroline.

"Are you alright?" he asked her, his tone softening only marginally.

"I'm cold," Caroline replied, a micro-expression of exhaustion finally bleeding through her stoic mask. "But I'm ready."

"Who the hell are you?" the Father demanded, pulling his gaze away from his battered daughter to glare at the newcomer. "What is the meaning of this intrusion? Who is this man, Caroline?"

"He's the man who pulled me out of the trunk of a sinking car," Caroline said. "He’s the reason I am breathing."

"Lies! All of it, lies!" the Bride shrieked, her panic now entirely uncontained. She pointed a trembling, manicured finger at the Briefcase Man. "He's a blackmailer! He's the one who kidnapped her! Arrest him! Somebody shoot him!"

The Briefcase Man looked at the Bride with a slow, deliberate expression of pure disgust. "You really should learn when to stop talking," he said evenly. "Because every word you say right now is being recorded by three separate federal agencies."
