FIVE BROTHERS, ONE BETRAYAL / Chapter 7 / 10

Chapter 7 - The Sixth Beneficiary

We returned to the hotel with the documents secured.

I called Daniel immediately.

He listened without interrupting.

When I mentioned the sixth beneficiary, he went silent.

“Claire, where did you find that?”

“In Dad's storage unit.”

“Don't show those documents to anyone else until I review them.”

“Daniel, who is the sixth beneficiary?”

He exhaled.

“I don't know.”

I didn't believe him.

Not because he was lying, but because something in his voice suggested he knew more than he was saying.

That evening, all five brothers met at my hotel suite.

For the first time, the family group chat became a real family meeting.

Daniel examined the letter.

Marcus reviewed the financial structure.

Ethan checked the document's digital history.

Noah read through the property records.

Luke contacted the attorney responsible for administering our father's estate.

The truth began to emerge.

The mysterious sixth beneficiary was not a stranger.

It was a trust established for someone whose identity had been concealed.

A child.

A child born before my parents married.

My father had never mentioned having another child.

I stared at Daniel.

“Did Dad have another family?”

“I don't know,” he said.

Marcus looked up from his notes.

“The trust was funded twenty years ago. Whoever this child is, they may have been receiving distributions.”

Ethan found a correspondence file.

One name appeared repeatedly.

Vanessa Cole.

I felt the room tilt.

“Why is Vanessa connected to this?”

Ethan continued reading.

“Her mother worked for your father.”

I sat down.

Noah frowned.

“Are you saying Vanessa is related to us?”

“Not necessarily,” Daniel said. “We need verified records before making assumptions.”

Luke agreed.

“Let's establish the facts first.”

The next morning, Rachel provided another piece of evidence.

Vanessa had once worked as an assistant for a private estate administrator. She had access to old trust correspondence through that position.

She had not randomly met Derek.

She had approached him because she knew about the trust.

And Derek had seen an opportunity.

But why had she destroyed the dress?

Because she wanted Sophie removed from the house.

The dress was only an excuse.

Rachel then revealed that Derek had been discussing a plan to have me declared financially irresponsible and emotionally unstable.

The accusations involving Sophie were intended to build a pattern.

He wanted records suggesting I couldn't manage my household or protect my child.

I felt a cold wave of anger.

He had not simply betrayed me.

He had been preparing to use my own daughter as a weapon against me.

Rebecca, our attorney, immediately advised us to preserve every message and document. We began the formal process of contesting the forged guarantee and seeking protective orders where appropriate.

Then Daniel received a call from the estate administrator.

He put it on speaker.

“Mr. Bennett, we located the original beneficiary's birth record.”

A pause.

“There's a problem.”

“What problem?” Daniel asked.

“The beneficiary is alive. And she has already contacted us.”

“Who is she?”

The administrator hesitated.

“Her name is Vanessa Cole.”

Nobody moved.

Vanessa wasn't simply Derek's mistress.

She was connected to the family trust.

But she wasn't the mysterious child.

She was the person managing the claim.

And she had a legal representative.

A representative whose name appeared at the bottom of the letter.

Derek Bennett.

My husband had been working with Vanessa long before he brought her into our home.

Then the administrator added one final detail.

“The original beneficiary has requested a meeting with all six children.”

All six.

I looked at my brothers.

There were only five of them.

And one of us was about to learn that our family had never been what we believed.
