FIVE BROTHERS, ONE BETRAYAL / Chapter 2 / 10

Chapter 2 - Five Men at the Front Door

At 7:18 p.m., someone rang the doorbell.

Derek was still downstairs, pouring another glass of wine. Vanessa had changed into one of his shirts and was sitting on the living room sofa as if she already owned the house.

I heard Derek mutter, “Who the hell is that?”

Then the door opened.

“Good evening, Derek.”

Daniel's voice.

My oldest brother never needed to raise his voice. He had the kind of calm authority that made people instinctively reconsider their next words.

“What are you doing here?” Derek demanded.

“Visiting my sister.”

“This is a family matter.”

Daniel stepped inside. “Exactly.”

I came downstairs carrying Sophie.

Behind Daniel stood Marcus, Ethan, Noah, and Luke.

Five men.

Five very different personalities.

Marcus wore a tailored navy suit and carried a leather briefcase. Ethan had a laptop bag over one shoulder. Noah looked like he had come directly from a construction site, wearing a dark work jacket and heavy boots. Luke was dressed simply, his expression unreadable.

Derek stared at them.

Then he laughed.

“Seriously, Claire? You called your brothers because I disciplined a child?”

Noah's jaw tightened.

“Disciplined?”

He glanced at Sophie's wrist.

“Is that what we're calling it?”

Vanessa immediately stood.

“I'm sure there's been a misunderstanding.”

Ethan looked at the torn dress on the kitchen counter.

“Interesting.”

“What?” Vanessa snapped.

“Nothing. Just wondering why the dress is lying inside out.”

She went pale for half a second.

Daniel noticed.

“Claire,” he said, “would you like to explain what happened?”

I told them everything.

Not just about the dress.

I told them about Vanessa's visits, Derek's increasingly late nights, the mysterious charges on our joint accounts, and the way Sophie had become frightened whenever her father entered a room.

I told them about the red mark on her wrist.

When I finished, nobody spoke.

Then Luke stepped forward.

“Sophie, sweetheart, would you be comfortable telling me what happened? You don't have to if you don't want to.”

My daughter nodded.

She described seeing Vanessa with the scissors.

She described Vanessa grabbing her wrist.

And she repeated Derek's threat about sending her away.

Luke crouched to her eye level.

“Did anyone tell you to say those things?”

“No.”

“Are you afraid of getting in trouble?”

Sophie looked at me.

I squeezed her hand.

“Not anymore,” she whispered.

Luke nodded.

“That's all I needed.”

Derek rolled his eyes.

“This is ridiculous. She's eight. Children make things up.”

Marcus finally spoke.

“Then you won't mind if we establish what actually happened.”

Derek turned toward him.

“Stay out of my business.”

Marcus placed his briefcase on the dining table.

“Unfortunately, your business has become rather interesting to me.”

Derek frowned.

“What does that mean?”

“It means your company has a financial review scheduled. And I have reason to believe several transactions require closer examination.”

Derek's expression changed.

He looked at Daniel.

“You represent my company.”

“I represent the company,” Daniel corrected. “Not you personally. And I am obligated to protect my client from misconduct, including misconduct by its executives.”

Derek looked between them.

For the first time that evening, he seemed uncertain.

Then Vanessa stepped forward.

“This is harassment. I'm calling the police.”

Luke calmly took out his phone.

“That's fine. We'll cooperate. We also want an officer to document the child's wrist injury and take statements.”

Vanessa stopped.

I looked at her.

“You wanted us out of this house. That's fine. But before anyone leaves, I want to know why you were cutting your own dress.”

Her lips parted.

Derek turned sharply toward her.

“What?”

Vanessa recovered quickly.

“Don't listen to her. She's trying to destroy us.”

Daniel placed a small envelope on the table.

“We'll discuss that in a moment.”

Derek opened it.

Inside was a printed photograph.

It showed Vanessa entering our house at 2:14 p.m. that afternoon, carrying a shopping bag.

But the photograph had something else.

She wasn't carrying the silver dress.

She was carrying a pair of scissors.

And according to the timestamp, the dress had been delivered to our house only eleven minutes later.

Derek stared at the image.

“Where did this come from?”

Ethan closed his laptop.

“That's a very good question.”

Then the doorbell rang again.

This time, it was the police.

May you like

And Vanessa suddenly looked more frightened than Sophie had been all evening.
