FIVE BROTHERS, ONE BETRAYAL / Chapter 6 / 10

Chapter 6 - The Storage Unit

The following morning, I met with our attorney, Rebecca Hayes.

She was direct, experienced, and unimpressed by Derek's reputation.

After reviewing the forged guarantee and Vanessa's note, she advised me not to confront anyone until we understood the full picture.

Luke accompanied me to the storage facility.

The unit was registered under Derek's business, but the access records showed that Vanessa had visited it several times.

We found boxes of paperwork, old computer equipment, and a locked metal cabinet.

Inside the cabinet were folders.

One contained copies of the documents Derek had asked me to sign.

Another contained photographs of our house.

Not family photographs.

Photographs of individual rooms, cabinets, safes, and office drawers.

Someone had been documenting our home.

Then I found an envelope with my name on it.

Inside was a copy of a document dated two years earlier.

It concerned a family trust established by my father.

I had inherited a minority interest in several properties and investment holdings after his death. My brothers had helped manage the assets, but I had deliberately kept my financial life separate from Derek's.

I had told him I came from a comfortable family.

I had never explained how comfortable.

The document showed that Derek had been attempting to gain control over a trust-related property through a company he secretly managed.

I stared at the page.

“He knew about the trust?”

Luke nodded.

“Apparently.”

“But I never told him the details.”

“Someone else may have.”

A noise came from behind us.

We turned.

A woman stood at the entrance.

She was in her thirties, wearing a gray coat and holding a phone.

“I called you,” she said.

I recognized her voice.

“Who are you?”

“Rachel. I used to work in Derek's office.”

She looked frightened.

“I helped Vanessa organize the paperwork.”

“Why?”

“At first, I thought it was legitimate. Derek said you were aware of everything.”

“And then?”

Rachel lowered her eyes.

“Then I saw the signature.”

She explained that Derek had been preparing a financial restructuring plan. Vanessa was supposed to become a director in a new company after the restructuring.

But the plan went beyond business.

Derek intended to use the forged guarantee to secure additional financing, transfer selected assets, and leave me responsible for debts.

The company would then be moved under a different ownership structure.

I felt sick.

“What about the trust?”

Rachel hesitated.

“Vanessa said your father had left something valuable that Derek couldn't access while you were still married.”

Luke's expression hardened.

“Did she say what?”

Rachel nodded.

“A sealed document. She called it the original.”

I remembered the note.

The girl must never see the original.

“What document?”

“I don't know. But I saw Vanessa take a folder from Derek's office and put it in the storage cabinet.”

We searched again.

Behind the bottom drawer was a narrow compartment.

Inside sat a small black box.

It contained an old photograph of my father, a handwritten letter, and a sealed envelope bearing his signature.

My hands trembled.

My father had died four years earlier.

I opened the letter.

My dearest Claire,

If you are reading this, someone may have tried to use your trust or your name without your permission. Do not assume the people closest to you are the people protecting you.

I stopped reading.

There was more.

My father had created a separate investment structure years before his death. He had named all six of his children as beneficiaries, but one asset had been held under special conditions.

A property development company.

A company Derek had been trying to acquire.

I looked at Luke.

“Why would Derek need this?”

Luke examined the final page.

“Because the controlling interest isn't yours alone.”

He pointed to a name.

Daniel Bennett.

My oldest brother.

But beneath Daniel's name was another.

A sixth beneficiary.

Someone none of us had ever heard of.

Then Rachel whispered:

May you like

“Vanessa knew about him.”
