Chapter 9 - The Last Bargain

Dante read the note without speaking.
Arya stood beside him, every nerve in her body screaming for action.
"Call the police," she said.
"My people are already tracing the message."
"Then call the police, too."
He looked at her sharply.
"That could put them in more danger."
"And charging into a trap alone won't?"
For once, he didn't argue.
Within minutes, the estate had become a command center. Security teams reviewed camera footage while Dante contacted a trusted police captain who had quietly helped him protect civilians from his own organization.
Elena sat at the library table, pale and trembling.
"They want me," she said. "They'll release the children if I go."
Arya turned on her.
"How can you possibly know that?"
"Because the Keeper told me this day would come."
Dante's eyes narrowed.
"You've been in contact with her?"
"Not directly. She left messages at places where I was hiding. She said the people behind the bombing would eventually use the children to force me into the open."
"And you never told me?"
"I couldn't."
"You could have called."
"And exposed their location?"
Dante slammed his hand against the table.
Arya stepped between them.
"Stop. The children are missing. You can tear each other apart after they're safe."
Elena began to cry silently.
Arya wanted to hate her. She wanted to blame her for every frightened night the triplets had endured, for every time Enzo had stared at the door, waiting for a mother who never came.
But Mia was missing, too.
And there was no room for hatred until the children were home.
Dante's security chief returned with an update.
A vehicle matching the description from the estate's outer cameras had been spotted near the old docks. The trail ended at a disused shipping warehouse.
Dante prepared to leave.
Arya caught his arm.
"I'm coming."
"No."
"One of those children is my daughter."
"Which is exactly why you stay here."
"You don't get to decide that my fear matters less than yours."
Dante looked at her, his expression torn.
Finally, he said, "You stay behind me. You do exactly what I tell you when we're inside."
"Only if you listen when I tell you something."
He almost smiled.
"You're impossible."
"So I've been told."
They reached the warehouse shortly before midnight. Rain swept across the docks, turning the pavement silver beneath the security lights.
Dante entered through a side door with two men while Arya followed several steps behind.
Inside, the triplets and Mia sat together on a wooden bench. Their hands were free, but a masked man stood near the exit.
Mia ran toward Arya.
"Mommy!"
Arya dropped to her knees and wrapped her arms around her daughter.
"Are you hurt?"
Mia shook her head, sobbing.
"No. They said we had to wait for the lady."
Across the warehouse, Elena stood beneath a hanging light.
Beside her was Adrian.
Dante raised his weapon.
"Let the children go."
Adrian shook his head.
"You still think this is about money or territory. It never was."
"Then tell me what it is about."
Adrian looked at Elena.
"Tell him."
Elena's face crumpled.
"The bombing wasn't arranged by a rival family," she whispered. "It was arranged by someone in our own bloodline."
Dante's eyes narrowed.
"Who?"
Adrian answered.
"Your father."
The words echoed through the warehouse.
Dante went completely still.
His father had died when Dante was twenty-six. He had built his criminal empire from the wreckage of that man's violent legacy, believing he'd escaped the worst of it.
"You expect me to believe a dead man ordered the attack?"
"Your father planned it before he died," Adrian said. "He left instructions with the Keeper. He believed Elena had evidence that could destroy the family. He wanted it erased."
"Then why did you help her escape?"
"Because I discovered the plan too late. I couldn't stop the bombing, so I helped her disappear afterward."
Dante's grip tightened on his weapon.
"You let me grieve for two years."
"I kept your children alive."
"You let me believe my wife was dead!"
"And if I'd told you the truth, you would have gone to war with every family in New York."
The masked man moved toward the children.
Arya pulled Mia behind her.
Dante's men shifted into position.
Then the warehouse lights went out.
A gunshot cracked through the darkness.
Someone screamed.
When the emergency lights flickered on, Adrian was on the floor, blood spreading across his shirt.
The masked man had vanished.
Elena was gone.
And beside the empty bench lay a small silver bracelet.
Arya recognized it immediately.
It belonged to Mia.
Dante looked toward the open loading doors.
A vehicle's taillights disappeared into the rain.
Then his phone vibrated.

A message appeared from an unknown number.
You found the wrong woman. The real Keeper is already inside your house.
