Chapter 8 - The Woman at the Front Door

Dante drove back to the mansion so fast that Arya had to grip the door handle.

Neither spoke during the journey.

When they reached the estate, every guard was positioned around the entrance. No one had drawn a weapon, but the atmosphere was taut enough to snap.

A woman stood in the foyer.

She was thinner than the Elena in the photographs, her dark hair cut to her chin. A faint scar crossed her cheek. She wore a plain gray coat and held a small canvas bag.

The triplets stood on the staircase.

Leo's mouth fell open.

Mateo began to cry.

Enzo didn't move.

The woman looked up at them.

"My boys," she whispered.

Dante stopped several feet away.

"Elena?"

She turned toward him.

For a moment, the entire mansion seemed to hold its breath.

Then she nodded.

Dante's face crumpled with an emotion so raw that Arya barely recognized him.

He took one step forward.

Elena raised her hand.

"Please. Don't."

He froze.

"You've been alive for two years."

"I know."

"You let me bury an empty coffin."

"I had to."

"You let our sons believe you were dead."

Tears filled her eyes.

"I know."

Dante's voice shook.

"Why?"

Elena glanced at the children.

"Because I was afraid of what would happen if I came back."

Leo descended one step.

"Mommy?"

Elena broke.

She rushed toward the staircase, but Enzo backed away.

"You're not supposed to be here," he whispered.

She stopped as if he'd struck her.

"I know you don't understand."

"You said you'd come back," Enzo cried. "You said it in my dream, but you never came!"

Arya moved to his side.

Elena looked at her.

"You're Arya."

"Yes."

"Thank you for taking care of them."

Arya's response came quietly.

"Thank me by telling them the truth."

Elena closed her eyes.

Dante stepped between her and the staircase.

"You don't get to walk in here and ask for forgiveness without explaining what happened."

She nodded.

"You're right."

They moved into the library, leaving the children with Arya and Maria.

Elena explained that before the bombing, she'd discovered that someone inside Dante's organization was selling information to a rival criminal group. The information included routes, meeting locations, and details about the children's security.

She had taken evidence to Adrian, believing he could help her escape the organization and protect the boys.

Instead, Adrian revealed that the betrayal reached higher than she imagined.

He told her that the only way to prevent a massacre was to disappear.

The bombing had been intended to destroy a vehicle carrying documents and make Elena's death appear convincing. She had been in the car, but she survived.

"Who ordered it?" Dante asked.

Elena looked at him.

"I don't know the name. I only know the person had access to your private security schedules."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because I believed you would hunt them down. And they would come for the boys."

"So you left me to protect them alone?"

"I thought I was protecting them by staying away."

Dante turned away, breathing hard.

Arya stood near the doorway, listening.

"Who is the woman in the photograph?" she asked.

Elena's expression changed.

"She helped me escape the hospital."

"What's her name?"

Elena shook her head.

"I never knew her real name. Adrian called her the Keeper."

Dante gave a bitter laugh.

"A convenient ghost."

"She saved my life," Elena insisted. "But she warned me that if I returned, she would expose what I'd done."

"What did you do?" Dante demanded.

Elena looked down at her hands.

"I signed the transfer order that allowed the bombing to happen. I believed it would be controlled. I believed no one would be hurt."

Dante stared at her.

"You helped arrange the attack."

"I thought I was buying a chance to escape. I didn't know the driver would die. I didn't know—"

"You didn't know?" His voice rose. "You made a decision that nearly killed our children!"

Elena flinched.

"I know."

For the first time, Dante looked at her not as a dead wife returned from the impossible, but as a stranger who had helped destroy his family.

He left the room.

Arya followed him into the corridor.

"She made a terrible choice," she said. "But the boys still need answers."

"They need a mother who doesn't disappear."

"They need the truth, Dante. Even if it hurts."

He looked at her, eyes bright with anger and grief.

"And what do I need?"

Arya's voice softened.

"You need to decide whether the man you were before this night is the man you want to be tomorrow."

He stood motionless.

Then a scream came from upstairs.

They ran toward the nursery.

The window was open.

The children were gone.
