Chapter 7 - The Confession That Changed Everything

Dante watched the video three times.

On the fourth, he stopped it before Elena finished speaking.

"She wouldn't have done that," he said.

Arya stood beside him in the darkened church.

"You don't know what she meant."

"She was protecting someone. Or someone forced her to say it."

"That may be true."

"Then why does it feel like you believe her?"

Arya hesitated.

"Because the woman in that video looked terrified. Not of the camera. Of whoever was standing beside it."

Dante stared at the frozen image.

He had built his life around one certainty: Elena had died because his enemies wanted to destroy him.

If she had arranged the bombing, then every decision he'd made since her death had been built on a lie.

They returned to the mansion before dawn.

Dante ordered a review of every document connected to the bombing, including hospital records, security logs, and the private medical arrangements Adrian had made.

Arya went straight to the children.

She found Leo sitting on the floor, sorting through Elena's old photographs.

"Is Daddy angry?" he asked.

"He's trying to understand something difficult."

"Is Mommy bad?"

Arya sat beside him.

"People can make mistakes. Sometimes they do things for reasons we don't understand until we know the whole story."

Leo lowered his eyes.

"What if the whole story makes Daddy sad?"

"Then we'll help him through it."

The words surprised her with their certainty.

She had arrived at the mansion desperate for a paycheck. Now she was worried about a man who had spent years teaching everyone around him to fear him.

That frightened her more than she wanted to admit.

Later that day, Dante found her in the garden.

"I've spent two years trying to identify everyone responsible for Elena's death," he said. "I ordered interrogations. I destroyed alliances. I nearly started a war with a family that may have had nothing to do with it."

"Then stop before you make another mistake."

He looked at her.

"You say that as if stopping is easy."

"No. I say it because it's necessary."

Dante's voice dropped.

"If Elena is alive, why hasn't she contacted her sons?"

"Maybe she couldn't."

"Or maybe she didn't want to."

Arya had no answer.

That evening, she discovered a second message hidden in the wooden box. It was tucked beneath the lining and written in Elena's familiar handwriting.

If Dante begins looking for me, the children will be in danger.

Beneath it was a hospital name and the signature of a doctor who had died six months earlier.

Arya brought it to Dante.

He read it, then immediately called his lawyer.

The records had been sealed, but the hospital's former administrator agreed to meet them the following morning.

Before they left, Dante took Arya aside.

"I need you to promise me something."

"What?"

"If this leads to Elena, you won't let the children see her until we know she's safe."

Arya's heart sank.

"They deserve the truth."

"They deserve to survive it."

"And what about what you deserve?"

Dante looked at her for a long moment.

"I stopped asking that question a long time ago."

At the hospital, the former administrator met them in a private conference room. She was a small woman with silver hair and nervous hands.

She confirmed that Elena had been admitted after the bombing under a false name.

"She was alive," the woman said. "She had serious injuries, but she was conscious."

Dante gripped the edge of the table.

"Who removed her from the hospital?"

The administrator hesitated.

"Your brother came with a transfer order."

"Adrian?"

"Yes. But he wasn't alone."

She slid a photograph across the table.

It showed Adrian standing beside a woman wearing a dark coat.

The same woman from Elena's photograph.

Arya leaned closer.

"Who is she?"

The administrator shook her head.

"I never learned her name. But I remember what she said before they left."

"What?"

The woman looked directly at Dante.

"She told your brother that if the children ever learned what their mother had done, none of them would be safe."

Dante's face became stone.

Outside the hospital, he stood beside the car without moving.

Arya approached him carefully.

"You're thinking about going after Adrian."

"I'm thinking about finding the woman in that photograph."

"And if she's responsible?"

"Then she'll answer for it."

He opened the car door.

Arya caught his wrist.

"Not with another war."

He looked down at her hand.

For a moment, she thought he would pull away.

Instead, he turned his palm upward and held hers.

"I don't know how to do this without becoming the man everyone expects me to be."

"Then let someone help you."

Their eyes met.

The moment was fragile, almost peaceful.

Then Dante's phone rang.

It was Maria.

Her voice was shaking.

"Mr. Mancini, you need to come home. The children are safe, but there's someone here."

"Who?"

May you like

Maria began to cry.

"Your wife."
