Chapter 6 - THE RAT IN THE TRAP

To ensure Thatcher and Claudine remained completely blind to the ambush, we needed one final piece of devastating evidence: an explicit, uncoerced confession of their criminal conspiracy recorded on audio and video.

The following morning, I orchestrated the bait.

I left my personal laptop open on the kitchen island of our penthouse before leaving for a faux medical appointment. On the desktop was a prominently displayed folder labeled Confidential: Autonomous AI Patent Licensing Agreement — Valued at $5.2 Million.

Within forty minutes, our remote monitoring software pinged Julian’s system. Thatcher had bypassed my laptop password, plugged in an external flash drive, and copied the entire mock file.

That evening, Thatcher texted me that he had an emergency client dinner in Charlotte and wouldn't be home until late. In reality, our tracking beacons showed his car pulling straight into the underground garage of the St. Regis Residences downtown—specifically, into the penthouse suite he had secretly purchased under a shell LLC using funds diverted from our joint savings account.

Inside the surveillance van parked across the street, I sat between Julian and Hannah, headphones clamped over our ears, watching the high-definition monitor linked to the pinhole cameras Julian's private investigators had installed inside the apartment two days prior.

The screen flickered to life. Thatcher was uncorking a vintage bottle of Dom Pérignon. Claudine lounged on a velvet sofa wearing an emerald-green silk slip, laughing hysterically.

"To the grand finale," Thatcher toasted, clinking his flute against hers. "I pulled the patent files off her laptop today. Once we force her into the medical facility, that intellectual property alone will net us an extra five million from the European buyers."

"How is she holding up?" Claudine asked, tracing a manicured finger down Thatcher’s chest. "She looked like a walking ghost yesterday."

"She’s practically catatonic," Thatcher laughed callously, taking a deep swig of champagne. "I doubled her dosage this morning. She complained about severe vertigo and blurry vision before she left for the clinic. By tomorrow night at the gala, she won't even be able to string a coherent sentence together. Marcus has the notary and the commitment papers ready in the private salon upstairs. Once she makes an embarrassing public scene, we have security escort her out, sign the involuntary psychiatric evaluation order, and fly to Zurich by Sunday."

"You're a brilliant monster, Thatcher," Claudine whispered, leaning in to kiss him passionately on the lips.

"Only for you, darling. Three years of playing the devoted, boring suburban husband is finally paying off."

In the surveillance van, the silence was suffocating.

My knuckles were white where they gripped the edge of the console. I had spent three years loving that man, cooking his meals, supporting his business ventures, nursing him when he had the flu, dreaming of building a family with him. Every compliment, every anniversary gift, every whispered I love you had been a calculated investment in my destruction.

I felt a warm, strong hand cover mine. Julian was looking at me, his jaw set in rigid determination, his eyes blazing with fury on my behalf.

"Are you ready for tomorrow night, Victoria?" he asked softly.

May you like

I pulled off the headphones, turned to look at him, and let out a cold, clear breath that purged every lingering trace of sorrow from my soul.

"I’m not just ready, Julian," I said, my voice steady as steel. "I’m going to destroy them."
