Chapter 10 - Clear Skies and Deeper Waters

Six months later.

The cottage on the shores of Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, was wrapped in the warm, golden glow of early summer. It wasn't an ostentatious glass palace; it was a sprawling cedar-shingle home with a wide wraparound porch, surrounded by weeping willows and wild hydrangeas, with a private wooden dock jutting out into clear, sun-dappled water.

Using the capital recovered from the trust, I had launched my own sports philanthropy foundation, providing athletic scholarships and aquatic safety programs to underprivileged youth across the state. For the first time in my adult life, my work belonged to me. My accomplishments were mine, built by my own intellect and passion, cast in the light of day.

"If you throw that tennis ball one more time, Barnaby is going to collapse from exhaustion," a deep, laughing voice called out from the porch.

I turned from the lawn, laughing, as our golden retriever dropped a soggy yellow ball at my bare feet, panting happily.

Ryan leaned against the porch railing, wearing a faded gray Henley and rolled-up jeans. He held two glasses of fresh lemonade, ice cubes clinking softly against the glass. He had stepped away from corporate coaching to head our foundation's competitive swim division, spending his days doing what he loved most—building strength in people who needed it.

I walked up the wooden porch steps, my white linen sundress fluttering in the warm lake breeze. I took a glass from his hand, our fingers brushing with that familiar, delicious spark that had never faded for a single second.

"Barnaby has champion endurance," I teased, taking a long sip of the sweet, tart lemonade. "He gets it from his coach."

"His coach thinks you need to sit down and rest," Ryan said, wrapping his free arm around my waist, pulling me gently against his chest.

I leaned back into his embrace, resting my head against his broad shoulder, closing my eyes as the scent of cedar, sun-warmed skin, and fresh water surrounded me. His heart beat strong and steady against my back—an anchor that never dragged me down, but kept me safe no matter how wild the tide became.

"Happy, Emily?" he murmured against my hair, his lips brushing the crown of my head.

I opened my eyes, looking out over the endless blue water stretching toward the horizon.

A year ago, I was awake at two in the morning, staring at a phone screen in a cold, silent room, wondering if I would ever feel alive again. I had believed that love was a sacrifice where one person gave until they were an empty shell, waiting for crumbs of affection from a man who couldn't even see her.

Now, held in arms that never faltered, standing on the edge of a life overflowing with purpose, laughter, and genuine passion, I took a deep, effortless breath.

"I'm finally home," I smiled, turning in his arms to pull his face down to mine.

And as Ryan’s lips found mine beneath the golden summer sun, the water sparkled before us—vast, deep, and without fear.
