Chapter 4 - The Gala Confrontation

The Grand Ballroom of the Drake Hotel was a monument to old-money opulence. Crystal chandeliers hung like frozen waterfalls from gilded ceilings, casting diamond refractions across hundreds of guests in black tie and couture. Waiters slipped through the crowd balancing silver trays of champagne, while a live jazz quartet played soft swing in the corner.

Daniel stood near the ice sculpture, surrounded by three senior managing directors. He was talking animatedly, hands gesturing, doing what he did best: selling an illusion. Yet his eyes kept darting frantically toward the grand entryway, his skin flushed beneath his tan, his bow tie pulled slightly too tight.

Beside him, pretending to look at an itinerary tablet, stood Chloe Davenport.

She was twenty-four, with wide doe eyes and a delicate frame poured into an emerald-green satin dress that was entirely too provocative for an executive gala. She kept brushing Daniel’s elbow, whispering small remarks that made Daniel shift uncomfortably.

Then, the murmurs began at the ballroom doors.

Daniel glanced over, and the glass of scotch in his hand tilted dangerously.

I entered the ballroom alone. I had chosen a floor-length, champagne-gold silk gown that clung to every newly sculpted curve of my back and shoulders, featuring a daring side slit that showed off legs toned by hundreds of miles of kicking against pool currents. My blonde hair tumbled in Hollywood waves over one bare shoulder, and around my neck sat a vintage Cartier diamond choker that had belonged to my grandmother.

I wasn't a meek, shadow-dwelling wife walking behind her rising star. I looked like an empress entering her own court.

"Emily," Daniel breathed as I glided toward his circle. His eyes were ravenous, taking in the transformation he had been too self-absorbed to notice over the last six months. He reached out to take my hand, trying to claim ownership in front of his peers. "You look... unbelievable. Gentlemen, you know my stunning wife, Emily."

I neatly dodged his touch by transferring my beaded clutch to my right hand, offering a dazzling smile to the senior partners instead. "Good evening, Mr. Sterling. Charles, congratulations on the expansion."

"Emily, my dear, you are glowing!" Charles Sterling boomed. "Your father told me Daniel has been working miracles on the portfolio. We're all eager for his keynote tonight."

"Miracles indeed," I purred, turning my gaze slowly toward Chloe.

The girl shrunk back half an inch, her youthful confidence faltering under my steady, amused stare.

"And you must be Chloe," I said, extending a hand.

Chloe hesitated, taking it limp-wristed. "Yes, Mrs. Mercer. It's an honor. Daniel talks about you constantly."

"I'm sure he does," I smiled, leaning in just enough so only the three of us could hear. "By the way, Chloe... how is your stomach feeling today? I was so worried after Daniel's late-night emergency visit. Did the urgent care clinic give you something for the cramps?"

Chloe’s face drained of every ounce of blood, turning a sickly chalk white. Her fingers trembled so violently she nearly dropped her tablet.

Daniel choked on his own breath, stepping between us. "Emily, don't do this here—"

"Do what, darling?" I asked, my voice carrying clearly over the gentle hum of the music. "I was merely checking on your hardest-working employee. After all, when a husband expends that much energy helping a junior staffer, a good wife should show some hospitality."

Several nearby executives glanced over, their ears pricking up at the tension.

"Excuse us for a moment," Daniel hissed under his breath, grabbing my upper arm and attempting to steer me toward the private balcony.

Before he could pull me three steps, a firm, heavy hand closed over Daniel’s forearm with the force of an iron vice.

"The lady didn't give you permission to drag her anywhere, Mercer."

Daniel whipped around, infuriated. "Who the hell are you to—"

His words died in his throat.

Standing behind Daniel was Ryan Carter. He wore a sharply tailored midnight-blue tuxedo that made him look like royalty rather than a swim coach. His presence was utterly commanding, his broad shoulders dwarfing Daniel’s gym-bro physique.

"I’m Emily’s guest," Ryan said, his hazel eyes flat, devoid of emotion, and chillingly lethal. "And I suggest you take your hands off her before I show this entire room what happens to men who put their hands on women."
