Chapter 5 - Pulling the Plug

The ballroom balcony fell into absolute, suffocating silence.
Daniel stared at Ryan’s grip on his wrist, then looked at me, his eyes bulging with disbelief and wounded pride. "Emily? You brought your... your pool boy to my firm’s annual gala?"
"Ryan is a private investor and former Olympic medalist, Mercer," a resonant, booming voice interrupted from behind them.
My father, Richard Bennett, stepped out onto the terrace. He was flanked by two private security personnel and Arthur Vance. My father didn't look angry; he looked disgusted, the way one looks at a roach crawling across a banquet table.
"Dad?" Daniel stammered, frantically adjusting his jacket as Ryan finally released him with a dismissive flick of his wrist. "Dad, Emily is having some kind of episode. She invited this stranger to make a scene, and—"
"Don't you dare call me Dad," Richard Bennett said, cutting through Daniel’s excuse like a scalpel. "I gave you my daughter’s hand because she loved you. I gave you your firm's initial ten-million-dollar operating credit because she believed in you. And you repay her by putting my money into a love nest in the West Loop?"
Gasps broke out among the small ring of elite spectators who had gathered near the glass doors. Chloe Davenport had already slipped away through the service exit, tears streaming down her face, abandoning Daniel to the slaughter.
"That's a lie! That's a misunderstanding!" Daniel shouted, sweat beading across his forehead, ruining his slicked-back hair. "Emily, tell him! You know me!"
"I do know you, Daniel," I said, stepping up beside Ryan. I didn't hide behind him; I stood shoulder to shoulder with him, my chin lifted high. "I know you remember Chloe's coffee order, her favorite sushi, and the exact rent on her apartment. But you couldn't remember our anniversary last month. You couldn't even notice that I’ve dropped two dress sizes and built a completely new life right in front of your blind eyes."
Arthur Vance stepped forward, opening a leather courier bag and pulling out a crisp white legal document. He thrust it directly against Daniel’s chest.
"Daniel Mercer, you have been officially served with a petition for dissolution of marriage," Arthur announced clearly. "Additionally, effective five o’clock this evening, the Bennett Family Trust has called in all outstanding promissory notes issued to Mercer Capital LLC. The accounts have been frozen pending a full forensic embezzlement investigation."
Daniel’s knees literally buckled. He grabbed the terrace railing to keep from collapsing onto the polished stone floor. "You... you called the notes? That will bankrupt the firm by Monday morning!"
"Then I suggest you start liquidating your assets," my father replied coldly. "Starting with your company car and that penthouse my daughter owns."
Daniel looked around frantically, searching for an ally among the crowd of colleagues and clients he had spent the last two years flattering. Every single one of them—men who had laughed at his jokes and clinked glasses with him twenty minutes ago—turned their backs, stepping back inside the warm ballroom to distance themselves from the radioactive ruin of his reputation.
"Emily..." Daniel whispered, his voice cracking into a pathetic, desperate whine as he sank to his knees, reaching out toward the hem of my champagne dress. "Please. We can fix this. I love you. It was just a mistake. I'll fire her tonight! I'll never speak to her again! Please don't take everything from me!"
I looked down at the man I had once spent a year chasing across college greens. The man I had wept for. The man who had made me feel like an invisible phantom in my own home.
I felt no rage. I felt no vengeful thrill.
I just felt free.
"You didn't love me, Daniel," I said softly, stepping back so his fingers grasped only empty air. "You loved the lifestyle my family gave you. And you mistook my grace for weakness."

I turned away, slipping my hand naturally into the crook of Ryan’s arm. Ryan looked down at me, his gaze fierce with quiet pride, and pressed his palm over my fingers.
"Let's go," Ryan murmured close to my ear. "You look too stunning to waste the night standing near the trash."
