Chapter 6 - The Woman Who Refused to Hide

“We release the evidence.”

Norah stood in the center of the safe house while Dante’s men argued around her.

Marco shook his head.

“Not yet.”

“Why?”

“Because Carmine controls people inside the police department.”

“Then federal authorities.”

“Possibly compromised.”

“Journalists.”

Dante finally spoke.

“No.”

Norah turned.

“No?”

“You remain invisible until this ends.”

“I am already on every television station in Seattle.”

“Then you remain physically invisible.”

Norah laughed sharply.

“You do realize I am the person this happened to?”

“Yes.”

“Then stop discussing me like cargo.”

The room went silent.

Dante’s jaw flexed.

Norah stepped toward him.

“Carmine chose me because he believed I was isolated and powerless.”

She pointed toward the television.

“Now he is telling the world the same story.”

Her voice hardened.

“That I am a helpless pregnant woman who needs powerful men to explain what happened to her.”

Dante stared at her.

“I am done helping him tell that story.”

“What are you proposing?”

“A press conference.”

Marco nearly choked.

Dante simply said, “No.”

Norah crossed her arms.

“You cannot order me.”

“I can keep you alive.”

“You can help keep me alive.”

The distinction landed.

Dante looked away.

Norah softened her voice.

“If you want me to trust you, then trust me.”

That changed him.

Twenty-four hours later, every major Seattle newsroom received an anonymous invitation.

Norah appeared in a private law office beside an independent attorney and a former federal prosecutor Elaine had trusted years earlier.

Dante remained outside camera range.

Norah looked directly into the lens.

“My name is Norah Gibson. I was not abducted.”

Reporters exploded with questions.

She continued.

She described Genesis Fertility Clinic.

The donor substitution.

The falsified records.

The threats.

She did not identify the unborn child’s father.

She did not need to.

Then she released selected documents proving that Genesis had violated chain-of-custody procedures.

By evening, state regulators raided the clinic.

Captain Hale publicly called Norah “confused and under coercion.”

That was his mistake.

Norah went back on camera.

“If Captain Hale believes I am under coercion, I invite him to explain why his name appears on financial transfers from a corporation connected to Genesis.”

The internet erupted.

Hale disappeared from public view.

Carmine called Dante that night.

“You let her speak.”

Dante stood beside the fireplace.

“I did.”

“You have become weak.”

Dante looked toward Norah.

She was sitting at the table eating peanut butter directly from the jar.

“No.”

His mouth almost smiled.

“I have become outnumbered.”

Norah threw a napkin at him.

Carmine heard the movement.

“You think this is amusing?”

“No.”

Dante’s expression hardened.

“I think you are finished.”

Carmine’s voice lowered.

“You still do not understand.”

The call ended.

The next morning, Genesis Clinic director Dr. Stephen Mercer agreed to testify.

He requested protective custody.

Before investigators could reach him, his car exploded.

Norah watched the footage in horror.

Carmine was erasing witnesses.

Dr. Vale remained missing.

Dante wanted to move Norah again.

She refused until dizziness forced her to sit.

Rosa immediately took control.

“Enough crime.”

She pointed at Dante.

“You. Stop threatening people.”

Then at Norah.

“You. Eat.”

“I am not hungry.”

“You are pregnant. Hunger has lost voting rights.”

Even Dante obeyed Rosa.

That afternoon, Norah experienced sharp abdominal pain.

Every conversation stopped.

Dante turned white.

“It could be normal,” Norah said.

“We are going to a hospital.”

“No public hospital.”

“I own—”

“If you say you own a hospital, I am leaving you.”

Dante blinked.

“I own part of one.”

Despite her fear, Norah laughed.

A trusted obstetrician arrived instead.

The ultrasound room became silent as the monitor flickered.

Then came the heartbeat.

Fast.

Strong.

Norah cried immediately.

Dante stood near the wall.

The physician smiled.

“Everything looks good.”

Norah looked toward Dante.

He had not moved.

“Come here.”

His eyes shifted toward her.

“Dante.”

He approached.

The doctor turned the screen.

“That is your baby.”

Dante stared.

The hardened mafia boss who could order armed men into gunfire looked completely defenseless.

Norah reached for his hand.

He allowed her to take it.

The heartbeat filled the room.

Dante whispered, “That small?”

The doctor smiled.

“For now.”

Norah watched his face instead of the screen.

Something inside her heart rearranged itself.

Later, Dante sat beside her bed.

“I have killed people,” he said suddenly.

Norah looked at him.

“I assumed your résumé had gaps.”

“I am serious.”

“So am I.”

His expression did not change.

“You should know what I am before you decide I am something else.”

Norah considered him.

“I know you are dangerous.”

“Yes.”

“I know you have done things I would not accept.”

“Yes.”

“And I know when Mrs. Kessler opened her door, you protected her even though she meant nothing to you.”

Dante looked down.

“She mattered to you.”

“That is my point.”

He met her eyes.

Norah continued.

“I am not going to pretend you are innocent.”

“I am also not going to pretend Carmine and you are the same man.”

Silence.

Then Dante’s phone rang.

Marco.

They had found Dr. Vale.

Alive.

She was being held at an abandoned Genesis research facility outside Tacoma.

Dante assembled his men.

Norah caught his sleeve before he left.

“Come back.”

His eyes lowered toward her hand.

Then toward her face.

“Is that an order?”

“Yes.”

Dante bent and kissed her forehead.

“For once, I will follow one.”

But 3 hours later, Marco returned without him.

His shirt was covered in blood.

Norah stood.

“Where is Dante?”

May you like

Marco could not meet her eyes.

“Carmine took him.”
