Chapter 5 - The Bloodline Lie

Norah dropped the letter.

Dante caught it before it reached the floor.

Neither spoke.

Marco looked from one to the other.

“No.”

Dante read the sentence himself.

His face lost color.

Norah backed away.

“If Salvatore was my father…”

She could not finish.

Dante understood.

“We would be half siblings.”

Her hands flew protectively over her stomach.

The room became airless.

Dante immediately called a private geneticist.

“No assumptions,” he said. “We test everything.”

Norah could barely hear him.

Hours later, blood and cheek swabs were collected.

The waiting was unbearable.

Dante kept his distance.

That hurt more than Norah expected.

By midnight, preliminary results arrived.

The geneticist called personally.

“Mr. Lombardi, Salvatore Lombardi cannot be Ms. Gibson’s biological father.”

Norah gripped the table.

Dante closed his eyes.

Relief moved through the room like oxygen returning after suffocation.

“But the letter—”

“Was intentionally false,” the geneticist said. “Your profiles show no sibling relationship whatsoever.”

Norah almost cried.

Dante’s hand found the edge of the table.

Only then did she understand how frightened he had been.

Marco examined Elaine’s flash drive.

The truth emerged slowly.

Elaine had fabricated multiple records because Carmine was searching for a child connected to Salvatore.

Not biologically.

Legally.

Norah had been entrusted to Elaine after the death of her real parents, researchers named Thomas and Rachel Gibson.

They had worked alongside Elaine.

They discovered Carmine was illegally harvesting genetic material from fertility patients and selling research to pharmaceutical intermediaries.

Thomas and Rachel intended to expose him.

They died in what police called a highway accident.

Elaine took their infant daughter and disappeared.

Norah.

“She protected me,” Norah whispered.

“For her entire life,” Dante said.

The flash drive contained evidence.

Bank transfers.

Medical records.

Names.

Enough to destroy Carmine’s legitimate empire.

Perhaps enough to imprison him.

But one folder was encrypted.

Its title contained only 1 word.

DANTE.

They finally opened it at dawn.

Inside was a video of Elaine.

She appeared younger, frightened, sitting in the same Seattle apartment where Norah had grown up.

“If Dante Lombardi is watching this,” she began, “then Carmine has probably already discovered the truth.”

Dante leaned closer.

Elaine explained that Salvatore Lombardi had learned of Carmine’s medical trafficking network.

He planned to turn evidence over to federal investigators.

Carmine had him killed.

Norah looked toward Dante.

His face became stone.

Elaine continued.

“Years later, Dante developed leukemia. Carmine attempted to control access to his treatment. I anonymously sent the research necessary for doctors to identify the therapy that saved him.”

Dante’s eyes widened.

Elaine had saved his life.

Norah’s mother had spent decades hiding from the man who murdered her friends while secretly protecting the son of another murdered man.

Then came the final revelation.

“Carmine believes the compatible genetic marker originated with me,” Elaine said.

“It did not.”

She looked directly into the camera.

“It came from Rachel Gibson.”

Norah’s biological mother.

Carmine had engineered Norah’s pregnancy because he believed combining Dante and Norah’s DNA might reproduce the compatibility that had once helped save Dante.

The baby was not merely leverage.

To Carmine, the child was intellectual property.

Norah stood so quickly her chair fell.

“He will never touch my baby.”

Dante looked at her.

“No.”

Something in his voice made Marco leave the room without being asked.

Norah faced Dante.

“Do not kill him.”

Dante’s eyes hardened.

“He murdered my father.”

“He murdered my parents.”

“He corrupted your clinic.”

“He turned my child into an experiment before it even existed.”

Norah moved closer.

“So I understand exactly why you want him dead.”

Dante said nothing.

“But if you kill him, his story ends with a bullet and everyone calls it mafia violence.”

She placed the flash drive between them.

“I want him exposed.”

“Exposure does not stop men like Carmine.”

“Evidence does.”

“Sometimes.”

“Then give it a chance.”

Dante studied her.

“You still believe institutions work?”

“I have to believe something works.”

He looked exhausted.

Norah reached toward his scarred eyebrow.

She stopped before touching him.

Dante did not move away.

Her fingers brushed the scar.

His breathing changed.

“What happened?”

“My uncle.”

She froze.

“I was 19.”

“Why?”

“I asked too many questions about my father.”

Norah’s thumb moved softly across the scar.

Dante closed his eyes.

For a man who frightened rooms into silence, he looked startlingly vulnerable.

“Norah.”

She knew the warning inside her name.

She ignored it.

“You said I was your vulnerability.”

“I was wrong.”

His eyes opened.

“You are becoming something considerably more dangerous.”

“What?”

“Someone I care whether I lose.”

Her heart stumbled.

Dante kissed her.

Not violently.

Not possessively.

He touched her face first, giving her enough time to move away.

She did not.

The kiss was brief.

Careful.

Almost uncertain.

When they separated, Norah whispered, “That was a terrible idea.”

“Yes.”

“Do not do it again.”

Dante looked at her mouth.

“Understood.”

She kissed him first the second time.

Then Marco knocked violently against the door.

“Sorry.”

They separated.

Marco looked entirely unapologetic.

“We have a problem.”

He placed a tablet over the table.

A news report filled the screen.

Police vehicles surrounded Norah’s apartment building.

The headline read:

MISSING PREGNANT WOMAN BELIEVED ABDUCTED BY ORGANIZED CRIME FIGURE DANTE LOMBARDI.

Norah stared.

Carmine had transformed Dante into her kidnapper.

Then the reporter displayed surveillance footage.

It showed Dante forcing Norah into the SUV.

Edited perfectly.

The gunfire had been removed.

The attackers had been removed.

To the world, Dante Lombardi had abducted a pregnant woman.

And 10 seconds later, the news anchor revealed the detail that made Dante’s expression turn lethal.

“Authorities have issued an arrest warrant.”

A photograph appeared.

The detective leading the investigation was Captain Richard Hale.

Norah recognized him from Elaine’s files.

One of Carmine’s oldest paid assets.
