Chapter 13 - The Desperate Ambush

|

Rejection does not kill a man like Adrian Romano, but it drives him to madness.

For two weeks after the summit, the underworld held its breath.

Adrian had shut down his social engagements and spent his days locked inside his fortress.

Meanwhile, Vanguard Maritime expanded with terrifying velocity.

Sophia had secured exclusive freight contracts with three major European shipping lines.

Her name was spoken with hushed reverence in corporate boardrooms and backroom mafia dens alike.

On a rainy Tuesday evening, Sophia left her downtown office accompanied by two private security guards.

Her bulletproof SUV was waiting at the private executive exit beneath the building.

As her vehicle pulled out onto the wet asphalt of the main boulevard, a heavy black commercial truck suddenly ran a red light.

The truck slammed into the lead security vehicle with deafening, violent force.

Metal shrieked, glass exploded across the intersection, and the lead car was thrown onto its side.

Sophia’s driver slammed on the brakes, the tires skidding across the slick pavement.

Before they could reverse, three unmarked black vans screeched to a halt around them, boxing the SUV in from every angle.

Eight masked men armed with automatic rifles leaped out of the vans.

“Stay down, Ms. Vance!” her personal bodyguard yelled, drawing his weapon.

Sophia did not scream.

She pressed her back against the reinforced leather seat, her heart pounding against her ribs.

The rival Lucchese family had been watching Adrian’s unraveling empire.

They knew that taking down Sophia would destroy the Moretti-Romano trade corridor in a single stroke.

Gunfire erupted like thunder in the narrow street canyon.

Bullets ricocheted off the armored glass of Sophia’s car, leaving white spiderweb cracks in the reinforced panels.

Her driver attempted to ram the van in front of them, but another truck blocked their retreat.

Suddenly, the roar of a high-performance engine tore through the rain.

A heavy, custom-armored Dodge Ram burst through the intersection like a battering ram.

The truck smashed straight into the Lucchese gunmen’s van, sending it spinning across the asphalt.

The driver’s door of the Ram flew open.

Adrian Romano leaped out into the barrage of gunfire, holding a heavy tactical shotgun in both hands.

His face was twisted in savage, lethal fury.

He did not seek cover.

He marched directly into the crossfire, firing with terrifying, calculated precision.

Two of the Lucchese shooters collapsed instantly on the pavement.

Adrian pumped the shotgun, racking another shell with a deafening metallic clack.

“Get away from my wife!” Adrian roared into the storm.

He moved like a demon through the smoke and rain, taking down the remaining attackers one by one.

A bullet from a dying gunman grazed Adrian’s shoulder, tearing through his dark wool coat and leaving a bloody gash.

Adrian didn't even flinch.

He dropped the empty shotgun, pulled his sidearm, and put a final round through the engine block of the last retreating van.

The street fell eerily silent, save for the hiss of steam from ruptured radiators and the steady drumming of rain.

Adrian stood in the middle of the carnage, his chest heaving, his shoulder soaked in blood.

He slowly walked toward the rear door of Sophia’s SUV.

He tapped on the reinforced glass with two bloodstained knuckles.

“Sophia,” he called out, his voice hoarse and trembling.

“Are you hurt?”

The armored door slowly pushed open.

Sophia stepped out onto the wet street, her heels clicking against the broken glass.

She looked at the bodies on the ground, then looked at the man who had just risked his life to save her.

Adrian offered her a trembling, bloody hand, his eyes shining with desperate hope.

“I protected you,” Adrian whispered, a faint smile touching his lips.

“I kept you safe, Sophia.”

Sophia looked at the blood dripping from his shoulder.

Her face was completely still.

“I had four Moretti tactical units waiting two blocks away, Adrian,” she said calmly.

“The police were already dispatched through our private frequency.”

“You didn't save my life.”

“You just proved that violence is the only language you know how to speak.”

Adrian’s smile died on his lips.

His outstretched hand fell limply to his side.

“Sophia... I bled for you.”

“I bled for you for three years, Adrian,” she answered softly, her voice carrying over the sound of the rain.

“And you didn't even notice until I stopped doing it.”

May you like

Sirens wailed in the distance, blue and red lights flashing through the rain-soaked mist.

Sophia turned and walked toward the arriving Moretti security vehicles without looking back once.
