Chapter 11 - The Fall of the Viper

The tension in the ballroom was thick enough to choke on.
Before Adrian could utter another word, the side doors of the ballroom burst open.
Isabella Romano strode into the hall, clutching a champagne flute, her eyes wild with alcohol and spite.
She had not been invited to the high-level syndicate summit.
She pushed past the security guards, pointing a trembling, red-tipped finger straight at Sophia.
“Look at her!” Isabella shrieked, her voice echoing shrilly against the vaulted ceiling.
“The little charity case playing dress-up in silk!”
“She stole family documents from Adrian’s desk to buy her way into the Moretti bed!”
A collective gasp rippled through the gathered crime bosses.
Don Carmine Falcone’s face darkened with absolute fury.
Adrian turned toward his cousin, his face pale with horror.
“Isabella, shut your mouth and get out of here!” Adrian roared.
“No, Adrian!” Isabella screamed, stumbling forward on her platform heels.
“You are too weak to put this peasant back in her place!”
“She was nothing before you picked her out of the gutter!”
Sophia did not flinch.
She did not raise her voice.
She simply gestured slightly with her left index finger toward her security detail.
Her chief auditor stepped forward, carrying an open silver briefcase.
Sophia took a crisp stack of financial bank records from the case and handed them directly to Don Carmine Falcone.
“What is this?” Falcone asked, his bushy eyebrows knitting together.
“Those are the offshore routing accounts for the Romano shell corporations in Cyprus,” Sophia explained in a clear, resonant voice that reached every ear in the ballroom.
“Over the past eighteen months, four million dollars were siphoned out of the syndicate’s pension reserve.”
Adrian’s head snapped toward the papers.
“That's impossible! Those accounts were flagged for municipal tax payments!”
“They were,” Sophia said, turning her merciless gaze onto Isabella.
“Until your dear cousin Isabella forged your signature and transferred the funds to a private casino syndicate in Macau to cover her personal gambling debts.”
Isabella froze, the champagne glass slipping from her fingers and shattering on the marble floor.
The amber liquid splashed across her satin shoes.
“You... you are lying!” Isabella stammered, her voice suddenly trembling like a frightened child.
“You fabricated those records!”
“The records bear the official notary seal of the Zurich Central Bank,” Sophia answered smoothly.
“I found the discrepancy three months ago, Adrian.”
“I kept the paperwork in my bedside drawer to handle it quietly within the family so you wouldn't face syndicate execution.”
Sophia looked at Adrian with eyes full of quiet sorrow and absolute finality.
“I protected your family name while you allowed her to humiliate me at your dinner table.”
Adrian looked at the documents in Falcone’s hands, then looked at Isabella’s terrified, guilty face.
The truth shattered his remaining pride into dust.
Sophia had been shielding him from his own blood.
Don Carmine Falcone closed the folder with a sound like a gavel striking wood.
“Guards,” Falcone commanded with terrifying coldness.
Two massive enforcers stepped forward, grabbing Isabella by her upper arms.
“No! Adrian, help me! We are blood!” Isabella shrieked as she was dragged toward the back exit.
Adrian did not move.
He did not say a single word.
He watched his cousin disappear into the dark corridor, knowing her life in this city was over forever.
When he turned back around to look for his wife, Sophia was already walking away toward the grand terrace.

Surrounded by the most powerful financiers on the Eastern seaboard, she looked untouchable.
And Adrian Romano had never felt so utterly, completely powerless.
