Chapter 9 - The Last Secret of the Corsetti Empire

Dante did not intend to follow Vincent's instructions.
He also did not intend to tell Lily that.
Unfortunately, Lily had spent enough time around dangerous men to recognize when one was making a decision without her.
“You're planning something.”
Dante looked up from his desk.
“Yes.”
“Without me?”
“Preferably.”
She folded her arms.
“My father is the hostage.”
“And Vincent wants you dead.”
“Then we need a plan that doesn't get either of us killed.”
Dante studied her.
For a moment, he saw the frightened waitress who had trembled beneath the chandeliers at Salvettes.
Then he looked again.
She wasn't trembling now.
She was angry.
Determined.
And entirely unwilling to disappear.
He sighed.
“Fine.”
Lily blinked.
“Fine?”
“We plan it together.”
Rachel Morgan refused to authorize an exchange without surveillance and tactical support.
Dante agreed.
Marco insisted on joining the operation.
Rachel initially refused him because of his compromised role in the ambush.
But Marco offered every message Vincent had sent, every bank transfer he had been forced to facilitate, and a complete list of safe houses.
Rachel accepted the evidence.
Then she made him stay at the command center.
“This is how you help your daughter,” she told him. “By staying alive long enough to testify.”
Marco reluctantly agreed.
At eleven-forty, Dante and Lily arrived near the abandoned shipping terminal.
Rain fell against the windshield.
The warehouses stood dark along the river.
Lily wore a small communication device concealed beneath her collar.
Dante carried a briefcase.
Inside was a copy of the ledger.
The original was already secured with federal investigators.
Lily looked at him.
“Are you afraid?”
Dante considered lying.
Then he remembered what she had said about honesty.
“Yes.”
She reached for his hand.
“So am I.”
He squeezed her fingers.
“Stay close.”
Vincent stood beneath a hanging industrial lamp.
Two armed men flanked him.
Michael Bellini sat tied to a chair.
His face was bruised.
His hair had gone gray.
But Lily recognized him instantly.
“Dad!”
Michael lifted his head.
His eyes filled.
“Lily.”
She took a step forward.
Dante caught her hand.
Vincent smiled.
“How touching.”
Dante placed the briefcase on a steel table.
“The ledger.”
Vincent nodded.
“And the girl.”
“No.”
Vincent laughed.
“Still trying to negotiate?”
Dante held his gaze.
“You get the ledger when Michael walks out.”
Vincent tilted his head.
“Your father would be disappointed in you.”
Dante's expression remained cold.
“My father spent his life disappointing everyone else.”
Vincent's smile faded.
Dante continued.
“You used his name to move money. You killed Sofia. You framed Michael. And you tried to kill a child because she inherited something you couldn't steal.”
Vincent stared.
Then he began laughing.
“You think Sofia was innocent?”
Lily felt her stomach tighten.
“What are you talking about?”
Vincent turned toward her.
“Your mother was brilliant. She built the entire financial structure that made the Corsetti empire untouchable.”
Lily shook her head.
“She was trying to expose you.”
“Eventually.”
Vincent smiled.
“But before that, she helped create the system.”
Dante looked at Michael.
“Is that true?”
Michael lowered his head.
“Yes.”
Lily felt as though she'd been struck.
Her mother had helped build the very system that destroyed her family.
Vincent continued.
“She believed she could control it. Make it legitimate. Turn dirty money into something respectable.”
His expression darkened.
“Then she discovered what I was doing with the shipping routes.”
Dante's jaw tightened.
“What were you moving?”
Vincent smiled.
“Things Antonio refused to touch.”
Lily looked at him with disgust.
“People?”
Vincent said nothing.
That silence was answer enough.
Michael lifted his head.
“Sofia tried to stop him. She collected the evidence. She planned to go to the authorities.”
Vincent's face hardened.
“And she betrayed the family.”
“No,” Lily said.
Her voice was quiet.
But steady.
“She tried to save people.”
Vincent looked at her.
“You have her eyes.”
Lily took a breath.
“And you have nothing left.”
Vincent's expression changed.
He reached for the briefcase.
Dante stopped him.
“Michael first.”
Vincent nodded toward one of his guards.
The man cut Michael's restraints.
Michael struggled to stand.
Lily moved forward.
Vincent raised his hand.
“Not so fast.”
He drew a pistol.
Dante stepped in front of Lily.
“Put it down.”
Vincent smiled.
“You always were your father's favorite mistake.”
Outside, a distant metallic sound echoed through the warehouse.
Vincent's eyes flickered toward the windows.
He knew.
Something was wrong.
Dante watched the realization spread across his face.
“You're surrounded.”
Vincent's smile vanished.
“You brought the police?”
“Federal agents.”
Vincent aimed the gun at Lily.
“Then she dies first.”
Dante moved.
Not toward Vincent.
Toward Lily.
He shoved her behind a concrete support as Vincent fired.
The bullet struck Dante in the shoulder.
He staggered.
Lily screamed.
“Dante!”
The warehouse erupted.
Federal agents entered from two sides.
Commands echoed.
Vincent's guards dropped their weapons.
One tried to run.
He was tackled near the loading dock.
Vincent backed toward the river entrance.
His gun remained raised.
Rachel Morgan stepped into view.
“Vincent Corsetti! Drop the weapon!”
Vincent looked around.
There was nowhere left to go.
Then he grabbed Michael.
Pressed the gun against his head.
And shouted, “Everyone back!”
Lily froze.
Her father looked at her.
For one terrible second, their eyes met.
Then Michael did something unexpected.
He signed.
Slowly.
Deliberately.
I love you.
Lily's heart broke.
She signed back.
I love you too.
Michael smiled.
Then he dropped his weight, pulling Vincent off balance.
The gun discharged into the ceiling.
Agents rushed forward.
Vincent fell beneath three officers.
The pistol skidded across the concrete.
And the man who had terrorized their families for twenty-one years was finally handcuffed.
Dante collapsed against the pillar.
Lily ran to him.
Blood stained his white shirt.
“No. No, no, no.”
He tried to smile.
“That's a lot of no.”
“Don't joke.”
“I'm not very good at following instructions.”
She pressed both hands against the wound.
“Stay with me.”
Dante looked at her.
His face had gone pale.
“Lily…”
“Don't.”
He swallowed.
“There's something I need to tell you.”
She shook her head.
“You can tell me at the hospital.”
He managed a weak smile.
“Bossy.”
“Very.”
His eyes softened.
“I love you.”
Lily stopped breathing.
The words seemed impossible.
After everything.
After the fear.
After the lies.
After twenty-one years of secrets.
He had chosen this moment to say them.
She bent over him.
“I love you too.”
Dante closed his eyes.
For one terrifying second, he didn't respond.
“Dante?”
She shook his shoulder.
“Dante!”
Paramedics rushed toward them.
Someone pulled her back.
She fought to remain beside him.
“Please,” she whispered. “Don't take him away.”
But they were already lifting him onto a stretcher.
May you like
And as the ambulance doors closed, Lily realized she had finally found the man she loved.
Only to face the possibility of losing him.
