Chapter 6 - The Betrayal Behind the Family Table

The gunshot shattered the windshield.
Dante shoved Lily beneath the dashboard as the bullet tore through the leather headrest.
Marco fired from behind the open passenger door.
The man in gray staggered backward.
Then disappeared behind the SUV.
“Move!” Marco shouted.
Dante pulled Lily from the wrecked car.
They ran through a narrow alley behind a closed restaurant.
Lily could barely breathe.
Her shoes slipped on wet pavement.
Dante kept one hand around her wrist.
“Keep moving.”
They reached a waiting security vehicle.
Marco climbed in behind them.
“Drive!”
The car accelerated.
Only when they were several blocks away did Dante release Lily's hand.
His fingers were covered in blood.
Lily stared.
“You're hurt.”
“It's nothing.”
“That's not nothing.”
She pulled a clean handkerchief from her purse and pressed it against the cut above his eyebrow.
Dante watched her.
Even after someone had tried to kill her, she was worried about him.
He had spent years surrounded by people who feared his anger, wanted his money, or needed his protection.
Lily seemed to want none of those things.
She simply didn't want him bleeding.
It unsettled him.
By morning, Dante knew the ambush had been arranged from inside his organization.
The attackers had known his route.
His departure time.
And the exact vehicle he would use.
Only four people had possessed that information.
Marco.
His driver.
His personal assistant.
And Vincent.
Dante summoned Marco to the library.
“Check every phone call made from the estate last night.”
Marco nodded.
“Already started.”
“Any casualties?”
“One attacker dead. Two escaped.”
“The man in gray?”
“Alive.”
Dante looked toward the window.
“Find him.”
Marco hesitated.
“There is something you need to see.”
He placed a photograph on the desk.
It showed the man in gray standing beside Vincent Corsetti.
The image had been taken outside a private club in Boston.
Six months earlier.
Dante stared at it.
His uncle had lied.
Not about knowing Michael Adams.
About knowing the man hunting Lily.
Lily spent the morning with Elena in the sunroom.
The older woman noticed the bruises on Lily's wrists.
Her expression tightened.
Did Dante hurt you?
Lily shook her head quickly.
He saved my life.
Elena examined the bruises.
Then someone else tried.
Lily nodded.
Elena closed her eyes.
For several seconds, she remained still.
Then she signed:
I have something to tell you.
Lily sat beside her.
When Sofia disappeared, I believed Antonio had killed her.
Lily's heart thudded.
But years later, I found a letter.
“What letter?”
Elena opened a drawer beneath the window seat.
Inside was a small wooden box.
She unlocked it.
A faded envelope lay beneath several photographs.
Elena handed it to Lily.
The letter was addressed to her.
Its first line made Lily gasp.
Elena, if you're reading this, then Vincent has discovered what I know.
Lily looked up.
Elena continued signing.
I hid it because Antonio threatened Dante.
Lily felt cold.
He said if I exposed Vincent, our son would die.
“Why didn't you tell Dante?”
Tears filled Elena's eyes.
Because I believed him.
Lily read the rest.
Sofia had discovered that Vincent was secretly transferring money through charitable foundations.
He was also using Corsetti shipping routes for operations Antonio had explicitly forbidden.
Sofia planned to expose him.
But she had one problem.
The documents were incomplete.
Someone had removed the final ledger.
Without it, Vincent could blame everything on Michael Adams.
And that was exactly what happened.
Lily looked at Elena.
“Where is the ledger?”
Elena shook her head.
I don't know.
Then she reached into the box again.
This time, she withdrew a small silver necklace.
A swallow.
Lily stopped breathing.
It matched the one in Sofia's photograph.
Elena placed it in her palm.
She gave this to me the night she disappeared.
Lily turned the pendant over.
A tiny engraving was hidden beneath the wing.
317-B.
Her eyes widened.
Locker 317.
But what was B?
Dante entered the sunroom just as Lily showed Elena the engraving.
He examined the pendant.
“Three-one-seven-B.”
Lily nodded.
“The locker at Union Station was 317.”
Dante turned the necklace over.
“B could mean a second location.”
Elena suddenly stood.
Her hands moved rapidly.
The bank.
Dante looked up.
“What bank?”
The old Corsetti bank building.
She signed an address.
A property on South LaSalle Street.
Dante recognized it.
His father had purchased the building decades earlier.
It had been closed for renovations after a fire.
“Why would Sofia hide something there?”
Elena's expression hardened.
Because Antonio believed no one would dare search his own vault.
They reached the building shortly before sunset.
Marco's team secured the entrance.
The old bank smelled of dust and cold stone.
Rows of brass deposit boxes lined the basement vault.
Box 317-B was near the back.
Dante inserted the small key hidden inside the pendant.
The lock clicked.
Inside was a black ledger.
And a sealed envelope.
Dante opened the ledger.
Pages of transactions.
Names.
Dates.
Account numbers.
Payments to judges.
Transfers to shell companies.
And a series of entries labeled with a single letter.
V.
Vincent.
Dante's hands tightened.
Then he found a page dated twenty-one years earlier.
A payment of five million dollars.
Recipient:
MICHAEL BELLINI.
Purpose:
SILENCE.
Lily stared at the entry.
“My father didn't steal the money.”
Dante turned the page.
A handwritten note had been added beneath the transaction.
Payment refused. Witness remains uncooperative.
Lily felt tears rise.
Michael had been offered five million dollars to betray Sofia.
He had refused.
And someone had burned down his warehouse.
They were leaving the vault when Dante's phone rang.
Vincent.
Dante answered.
“Uncle.”
Vincent sounded almost cheerful.
“I hear you've been busy.”
Dante said nothing.
“Looking through old family property. Digging up things that should remain buried.”
Dante's blood turned cold.
“How do you know where I am?”
Vincent laughed softly.
“Because I taught you everything you know about protecting yourself.”
A pause.
“Unfortunately, I also taught you to trust the wrong people.”
Dante looked toward Marco.
His security chief was standing beside the vault door.
For one brief moment, their eyes met.
Marco looked confused.
Then his phone vibrated.
He glanced down.
The color drained from his face.
Dante heard Vincent smile through the phone.
“Ask Marco what happened to his daughter.”
Marco slowly raised his eyes.
Dante lowered the phone.
“What daughter?”
Marco's voice broke.
“Boss…”
Dante stepped toward him.
“What did you do?”
Marco shook his head.
“I didn't have a choice.”
Before Dante could react, Marco drew his gun.
Not toward Dante.
Toward the vault entrance.
May you like
“I'm sorry,” he whispered.
And pulled the trigger.
