Chapter 9 - THE LAST SECRET OF ARTHUR VALE

The trial began four months later.
Evelyn Price accepted a plea agreement.
Dr. Lowell testified.
Sebastian Vale admitted embezzlement and obstruction, but prosecutors found no evidence he had participated in Daniel Ward’s murder.
The true architect of the conspiracy was Evelyn.
But Arthur had one secret left.
He revealed it the morning before he testified.
Elena found him in the library.
On the table sat another envelope.
Her name.
“No more mystery letters,” she warned.
Arthur smiled.
His speech had improved remarkably.
“Last one.”
“You said that last time.”
“I lied.”
“I’m shocked.”
She opened the envelope.
Inside was a photograph.
Daniel Ward.
Her father.
Holding nine-year-old Elena.
Beside them stood Arthur.
And a seventeen-year-old Damian.
Elena stared.
“I met him?”
Damian entered behind her.
“What?”
She showed him.
His face went still.
“I remember this.”
“You do?”
“Your father brought you to the office because your babysitter canceled.”
Elena stared at the photograph.
“I don’t remember you.”
“You threw orange juice on me.”
She looked at him.
“Why?”
“You said I was rude.”
“Accurate.”
Arthur laughed.
Then he became serious.
“Daniel saved Damian.”
Elena looked at him.
“What?”
Arthur folded his hands.
“Night Daniel died… Evelyn wasn’t after him.”
Damian went cold.
“She was after me?”
Arthur nodded.
Daniel had discovered Evelyn’s manipulation of the accounts.
He also discovered she planned to eliminate Damian, making Sebastian the easiest figure to manipulate after Arthur.
Daniel called Arthur.
Then drove to find Damian.
Evelyn followed.
Daniel forced Damian into another car moments before Evelyn’s hired driver rammed Daniel’s vehicle through the guardrail.
Damian remembered only fragments.
A man shouting.
A car.
Rain.
Police lights.
Arthur had hidden the truth afterward because exposing it would have triggered a war inside the organization.
Elena stood slowly.
“You let everyone believe my father died in an accident.”
Arthur’s eyes filled.
“Yes.”
“My mother spent ten years thinking he fell asleep at the wheel.”
“I know.”
“You could have told us.”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t you?”
Arthur’s voice weakened.
“Coward.”
The word landed harder than any excuse.
Elena cried.
Arthur did too.
“I protected empire,” he whispered. “Not family.”
Damian stood silently nearby.
Elena could have walked away.
Part of her wanted to.
Instead she looked at the old man she had once fed spoonfuls of water in a dark hospital room.
A man powerful enough to destroy others.
Weak enough to fail people he loved.
Human enough to regret it.
“I don't forgive you today.”
Arthur nodded.
“I know.”
“Maybe not tomorrow either.”
“I know.”
“But you’re going to testify.”
“Yes.”
“You’re going to say his name.”
“Yes.”
“All of it.”
Arthur straightened.
“All.”
The next day Arthur Vale entered federal court in a wheelchair.
Cameras waited outside.
Reporters shouted questions.
Damian walked beside him.
Elena watched from the gallery holding Grace.
Arthur took the oath.
Then, slowly and clearly, he told the truth.
Every name.
Every crime.
Every failure.
And finally—
“Daniel Ward died because he had more courage than I did.”
Elena closed her eyes.
May you like
For the first time in eighteen years, her father’s death belonged to the truth.
Not a lie.
