Chapter 2 - THE SON WHO CAME AT MIDNIGHT

Damian Vale arrived at 12:06 the following night with eight men and no warning.
Elena knew immediately who he was.
Everyone did.
Six feet three.
Dark charcoal coat.
Black hair combed back from a face that looked carved instead of born.
The kind of man who did not have to raise his voice because everyone around him had already decided to listen.
He stepped through St. Vincent’s lobby while rain hammered the windows.
The receptionist stood so quickly she knocked over her coffee.
“Mr. Vale.”
“Where is my father?”
Dr. Lowell appeared within seconds.
“Damian. We weren’t expecting you.”
“That wasn't my question.”
Elena watched from the nurses’ station.
Something had happened.
Damian had the expression of a man who had driven ninety miles expecting to find a body.
Lowell lowered his voice.
“Your father is stable.”
“I received a message.”
“What message?”
Damian pulled out his phone.
Four words glowed on the screen.
YOUR FATHER IS AWAKE.
Elena’s heart stopped.
She had sent nothing.
Lowell went pale.
“That’s impossible.”
Damian noticed.
So did Elena.
His gray eyes shifted toward her.
For one terrible moment, she felt as if he could see the key hidden inside her scrub pocket.
“Who is she?”
“Elena Ward,” Lowell said. “Night nurse.”
Damian studied her stomach.
“You’re pregnant.”
Elena resisted the urge to look down.
“Excellent observation.”
One of his bodyguards coughed.
Damian’s eyes sharpened.
Lowell looked horrified.
Elena had discovered years ago that wealthy men disliked sarcasm when it came from people wearing name tags.
Damian stepped closer.
“How long have you cared for my father?”
“Six weeks.”
“Has he spoken?”
“No.”
“Communicated?”
Elena hesitated half a second too long.
Damian noticed.
“Ms. Ward.”
“His responses fluctuate.”
“What does that mean?”
“It means brains are complicated.”
“And you’re avoiding my question.”
“And you're interrogating a nurse in a hallway.”
Silence.
Then, unexpectedly, the corner of Damian’s mouth moved.
Barely.
“You don’t scare easily.”
“I’m seven months pregnant, behind on rent, and working overnight shifts. You’re not in my top five problems.”
This time one of the guards definitely smiled.
Damian turned.
The smile vanished instantly.
He entered Arthur’s suite.
Elena followed because Arthur was her patient.
Lowell followed because he clearly did not want them alone.
Arthur was awake.
The moment he saw Damian, something changed.
His pulse climbed from sixty-eight to eighty-nine.
Damian crossed the room.
“Dad.”
Arthur stared at him.
No warmth.
No anger.
Nothing.
Damian took his father’s hand.
Arthur pulled two fingers away.
Damian froze.
Elena noticed.
Lowell noticed too.
“Reflex movement,” the doctor said quickly.
Elena looked at him.
Arthur’s eyes found hers.
Once.
A blink.
Damian followed his father’s gaze.
Straight to Elena.
“What?”
“Nothing.”
“My father looked at you.”
“He has eyes.”
Lowell interrupted.
“Damian, perhaps we should let him rest.”
Damian ignored him.
“Ms. Ward, outside.”
Elena crossed her arms.
“I’m responsible for—”
“Now.”
Ten seconds later they stood inside an empty family lounge.
Damian closed the door.
“You have thirty seconds to tell me why my father responds to you.”
“I treat him like he understands me.”
“Others don’t?”
“You should probably ask the people you pay.”
Something dangerous appeared behind Damian’s eyes.
“Be careful.”
“No.”
That answer surprised both of them.
Elena lowered her voice.
“Your father has been lying in that room for almost a year. People speak around him like he’s furniture. Maybe you should be careful.”
Damian stepped closer.
“What did he tell you?”
“Nothing.”
“That’s not what I asked.”
Elena felt the key inside her pocket.
TRUST NO VALE.
She looked at Damian’s face.
There was exhaustion there beneath the coldness.
And something else.
Fear.
“You really didn’t know he could understand people.”
Damian went still.
Elena had her answer.
Before either could speak, an alarm sounded from Arthur’s room.
They ran.
Arthur was convulsing.
Elena reached the bed first.
“Turn him sideways!”
Lowell grabbed a syringe.
“I’ll sedate him.”
“No!”
Elena slapped his hand away.
Everyone froze.
Lowell stared at her.
“What the hell are you doing?”
“He’s already over-sedated.”
“That is not your decision.”
Damian’s voice cut through the room.
“Stop.”
Lowell turned.
“Damian—”
“No medication until she explains.”
Elena’s hands trembled as she pulled up Arthur’s chart.
“These doses are too high.”
Lowell laughed bitterly.
“You're a contract nurse.”
“And I can count.”
“His neurological agitation requires—”
Arthur’s convulsions stopped.
His eyes opened.
He looked directly at Damian.
Then at Lowell.
Then his shaking left hand lifted.
One finger extended.
He pointed.
At Dr. Lowell.
And for the first time in almost a year, Arthur Vale made a sound.
Not a word.
A broken rasp.
But unmistakable.
“No.”
Nobody moved.
Lowell’s face drained of color.
May you like
Damian slowly turned toward him.
“What did my father just say?”
