Chapter 24 - THE LAST MERIDIANDaniel Voss chose Blackthorne for the final confrontation.

Not because it was strategically intelligent.
Because symbols mattered to men like him.
The Circle had begun there.
He intended to restart it there.
We let him believe he could.
The plan required every person Daniel underestimated.
Rachel and David agreed to move temporarily under protection.
Emma stayed with them.
Caleb insisted on helping remotely.
Sophie wanted her father stopped.
Lydia and Evelyn brought decades of records.
Alexander coordinated investigators.
And Dominic?
Dominic did the hardest thing anyone had ever asked him to do.
Nothing violent.
He hated it.
Daniel entered Blackthorne at 9:17 p.m.
He came alone.
Apparently.
“Where is Emma?” he asked.
I stood in the ballroom.
“The child you stole from me?”
“Created.”
“You mean manufactured for your succession fantasy.”
Daniel smiled.
“You're emotional.”
“I'm a mother.”
“Biologically.”
I wanted to hit him.
Dominic had taught me many things.
Restraint was occasionally one of them.
Daniel believed Emma represented the perfect merger of two rebellious bloodlines.
Vale intelligence.
Mercer power.
He spoke about her like an investment.
Then Caleb entered.
I hadn't known he planned to.
Neither had Dominic.
Daniel smiled.
“The heir.”
Caleb walked beside me.
“No.”
Daniel tilted his head.
“No?”
“My name is Caleb Mercer.”
“Yes.”
“That's a name. Not a job.”
Daniel laughed.
“You'll understand when you're older.”
Caleb looked toward Sophie, who entered behind him.
Daniel's smile vanished.
“Sophie.”
“Hi, Dad.”
For the first time, Daniel lost control.
“You shouldn't be here.”
“Neither should you.”
“You don't understand what I'm building.”
“You tried to gas me.”
“It wasn't lethal.”
Sophie laughed bitterly.
“That's your defense?”
Daniel's hand moved toward his jacket.
Dominic appeared.
“Don't.”
Daniel stopped.
Security surrounded the ballroom.
Then every screen activated.
The twelve other heirs appeared remotely.
Daniel looked around.
“What is this?”
Caleb answered.
“Your succession meeting.”
One by one, the heirs spoke.
They rejected the Circle.
Some publicly.
Some anonymously.
But all had supplied evidence.
Bank accounts.
Training materials.
Recorded conversations.
Family archives.
The Circle had spent generations teaching children to preserve secrets.
Those children used the same training to expose them.
Daniel's face changed.
“You think this ends anything?”
“No,” I said.
“Nothing ends everything.”
I understood that now.
There would always be people who wanted power.
Always corruption.
Always fear.
We weren't destroying human nature.
We were destroying one machine.
That was enough.
Federal agents entered.
Daniel reached for his weapon.
Dominic didn't move.
Sophie did.
“Dad.”
Daniel looked at his daughter.
She was crying.
“Please don't make the last thing I remember about you be someone getting shot.”
His hand remained inside his coat.
Then slowly came out empty.
He surrendered.
No gunfire.
No blood.
No child watching another parent die.
After he was taken away, Sophie collapsed.
Caleb held her.
Dominic walked toward me.
“Is it over?”
I looked around the ballroom.
The place where I had taken three bullets.
The place where Dominic proposed.
The place where generations of the Circle had once met beneath our feet.
“No.”
His eyebrow lifted.
I smiled.
“But this part is.”
Then Emma ran into the ballroom.
I froze.
Rachel followed.
“We thought maybe she should see you.”
Emma ran directly toward me.
I crouched.
She hugged me.
No hesitation.
No confusion.
Just six-year-old certainty.
Then she released me and looked at Dominic.
“Are you the scary one?”
Alexander burst out laughing.
Dominic stared at him.
“I said nothing,” Alexander insisted.
Emma looked up.
“Caleb said you're scary.”
“Caleb.”
From across the ballroom:
“I said intimidating!”
Emma considered Dominic.
Then held up her arms.
“Can you carry me?”
Dominic Mercer—former mafia boss, billionaire, terror of half the Eastern Seaboard—looked absolutely terrified.
He looked at me.
I smiled.
“Good luck.”
He carefully lifted her.
Emma immediately touched the gray in his hair.
“You're old.”
Alexander had to leave the room.
May you like
I laughed until I cried.
And Dominic, despite himself, smiled.
