Chapter 23 - EMMAWe reached Connecticut in fifty-one minutes.

Dominic would later deny several aviation regulations were violated.

Alexander would later provide documentation proving otherwise.

The Bennett house was empty.

Front door open.

Broken glass.

No blood.

That mattered.

A phone lay on the kitchen floor.

Rachel's.

Dominic's security team searched the neighborhood.

A camera across the street had captured two vehicles.

One belonged to federal protective services.

The other belonged to Rachel.

She hadn't been taken.

She had escaped.

Smart woman.

Twenty minutes later, Rachel called from a police station.

Emma was safe.

So was David.

I nearly collapsed.

We met at a secure federal facility.

I saw Emma through glass first.

Six years old.

Brown hair.

Gray-green eyes.

She was coloring.

Pancake the dog lay beside her.

Dominic stopped next to me.

Neither of us spoke.

Then Caleb arrived with Alexander.

He stared through the glass.

“Wow.”

Emma looked like me.

Not exactly.

Enough.

Rachel entered the hallway.

She looked exhausted.

Terrified.

Ready to fight us.

I respected her immediately.

“You're Eleanor.”

“Yes.”

“And you're Dominic.”

“Yes.”

Her eyes moved toward Caleb.

“And that's?”

“My son,” Dominic said.

Caleb didn't correct him.

Rachel looked at me.

“Are you going to try to take her?”

“No.”

The answer came before she finished.

Rachel's shoulders weakened.

I continued.

“You're her mother.”

Tears filled her eyes.

“She is biologically connected to me. But you raised her. You held her when she was sick. You taught her to walk. You know which cereal she hates and what makes her laugh.”

Rachel cried.

“So no. I will not take your daughter.”

Dominic added quietly:

“But we will protect her.”

Rachel looked at him.

“That sounds threatening.”

“It often does.”

I touched his arm.

“He means well.”

“I am standing here.”

“I'm aware.”

For the first time, Rachel almost smiled.

Then Emma entered.

She held a drawing.

“Mom?”

Rachel crouched.

“This is Eleanor.”

Emma looked at me.

“You have my eyes.”

My throat closed.

“Maybe you have mine.”

She considered that.

Then:

“Are you my other mom?”

Children make impossible conversations brutally simple.

Rachel looked at me.

I crouched.

“Something unusual happened before you were born.”

“Like magic?”

“Sort of. But not good magic.”

She nodded seriously.

“I have questions.”

“I bet.”

“Do you like pancakes?”

“Yes.”

“Dogs?”

“Yes.”

“Math?”

“Yes.”

She looked horrified.

“Oh.”

Caleb laughed.

Emma noticed him.

“Who's that?”

Caleb approached.

“Caleb.”

“Are you my brother?”

The room stopped.

Caleb looked at me.

Then Dominic.

Then Emma.

“Yeah.”

His voice softened.

“I think I am.”

Emma smiled.

“Cool.”

That was it.

Six years of conspiracy collapsed beneath the word cool.

Then Emma handed him her drawing.

Pancake wearing a crown.

Caleb accepted it solemnly.

“Excellent work.”

Rachel laughed through tears.

For one hour, the world felt manageable.

Then federal security found a device beneath the Bennett family's car.

A tracker.

Someone had known where they were for months.

Daniel Voss hadn't discovered Emma recently.

He had always known.

Which meant Keene hadn't hidden her successfully.

Daniel had simply allowed her to grow up normally.

Why?

Evelyn found the answer.

The Circle's succession files had behavioral requirements.

They believed trauma at a specific age increased loyalty to the organization that later offered protection.

I felt sick.

Emma wasn't supposed to be raised by the Circle.

She was supposed to lose her family first.

Exactly like Caleb lost Rebecca.

Exactly like Dominic lost people he loved.

Create the wound.

Then become the cure.

Daniel wasn't coming to recruit Emma.

He was coming to orphan her.

Dominic looked through the glass at David and Rachel.

Then at me.

“No.”

One word.

Absolute.

May you like

Nobody was taking another mother from another child.

Not this time.
