Chapter 10 - The Wedding That Finally Became a Family

Three months later, the Moretti mansion looked different.

The east wing had been renovated.

The old family portraits had been removed.

The locked rooms had been opened.

And the marble ballroom where Luca's wedding had been interrupted was now filled with children, flowers, and sunlight.

Grace was sleeping in a white bassinet.

Daniel was sitting on the floor beside her, carefully arranging wooden blocks.

Elena watched them from the doorway.

For six years, she had imagined this moment.

Not the mansion.

Not the money.

Not the power.

Just her children being safe.

Luca approached from behind.

"How are they?"

"Happy."

He placed a hand on her shoulder.

"How are you?"

Elena turned.

"Still learning how to believe this is real."

He kissed her forehead.

"Take your time."

Their marriage had never been perfect.

It had been built around secrets, dangerous loyalties, and years of grief.

But they had finally stopped pretending that love alone could repair everything.

They had started therapy.

They had hired independent security.

And Luca had begun dismantling the criminal networks his father had built.

Michael survived the shooting.

He was recovering in a private medical facility under a different identity.

The authorities had arrested Anthony and Samuel Price.

Dr. Hayes had agreed to testify.

Vanessa had disappeared before the investigation was completed.

But her statement had helped uncover the hospital records and identify several people involved in the children's disappearance.

Emily had been offered a substantial financial reward.

She refused it.

Instead, she asked Luca for something else.

A small house.

A chance to study nursing.

And enough money to help children who had been abandoned by the system.

Luca gave her all three.

"You saved my family," he told her.

Emily shook her head.

"Your family saved itself."

Luca smiled.

"You carried my daughter into a room full of people who would have done anything to stop you."

"She deserved to know her father."

"And her mother."

Emily looked toward Elena.

"Yes. Both of them."

That afternoon, Luca arranged a small ceremony in the garden.

There were no politicians.

No business associates.

No armed men standing beside the altar.

Only a few trusted friends, the children, and the people who had helped bring the family back together.

Elena wore a simple ivory dress.

Luca stood beside her in a dark suit.

They exchanged rings beneath an arch of white roses.

This time, nobody interrupted.

When the ceremony ended, Daniel ran toward them.

"Are you going to stay together forever?"

Elena knelt.

"That's the plan."

Daniel looked at Luca.

"Even when you get mad?"

Luca smiled.

"Especially then."

Grace began crying.

Luca lifted her from the bassinet.

She immediately stopped.

Elena watched him.

"She knows your voice."

"She has good taste."

Elena laughed.

For the first time in years, the sound was completely free of fear.

Later that evening, Emily received a package at the house Luca had given her.

There was no return address.

Inside was an old photograph.

It showed three newborn babies lying together in a hospital nursery.

Grace.

Daniel.

And a third child.

On the back was a message.

THE THREE OF YOU WERE NEVER SUPPOSED TO MEET.

Emily immediately called Luca.

He arrived twenty minutes later.

Elena stood beside him as he examined the photograph.

Her face lost its color.

"That's impossible."

Luca looked at her.

"What?"

"That's not the third child."

He turned the photograph over.

Elena pointed to the small hospital tag around the third baby's wrist.

The name was not Sophia.

It was not Michael.

It was a name neither of them recognized.

ELIZABETH MORETTI.

Luca stared at the photograph.

"Who is Elizabeth?"

Elena shook her head.

"I don't know."

Emily reached into the package again.

There was a second item.

A small silver key.

Luca recognized it immediately.

It was identical to the key his grandfather had kept inside the family mausoleum.

He turned it over.

A number had been engraved on the back.

ROOM 317.

Marcus entered the room carrying a tablet.

"Boss, we have a problem."

Luca looked up.

"What now?"

Marcus placed the tablet on the table.

A security recording showed a woman entering the private hospital where Michael was recovering.

She wore a dark coat.

Her face was partially hidden.

But when she reached the reception desk, the camera captured her profile.

Luca leaned closer.

It was Vanessa.

She placed a document on the counter.

Then she looked directly at the security camera.

Her lips moved.

The audio was faint, but the words were clear.

"Tell Luca his father wasn't the one who ordered the children separated."

The recording ended.

Luca stared at the screen.

Elena slowly reached for his hand.

"Then who was?"

His phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

A woman's voice came through.

"Mr. Moretti?"

"Who is this?"

"My name is Elizabeth."

Luca's eyes narrowed.

"Elizabeth Moretti?"

There was a long pause.

Then the woman whispered:

"Please don't trust your wife."

Elena froze.

Luca looked at her.

The voice continued.

"She knows what happened to the third baby."

The call disconnected.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Luca looked at Elena.

She looked back at him.

Neither spoke.

Then Grace began crying in the next room.

Elena turned toward the sound.

Luca watched her walk away.

On the table, the photograph of the three newborns lay beside the silver key.

He picked it up again.

And for the first time since the wedding, he wondered whether bringing his family back together had uncovered a truth far more dangerous than the one they had spent six years trying to survive.

Because somewhere in the city, a woman named Elizabeth Moretti was alive.

She knew his family's secrets.

She knew his wife's past.

And she had just made one thing clear.

The greatest betrayal in the Moretti family had not happened six years ago.

It had happened before Luca was even born.
