Chapter 1 - The Child Nobody Was Supposed to Find

“Mr. Moretti, you need to see this child.”
Emily Carter walked into the wedding carrying a newborn baby.
And the moment Luca Moretti saw the hospital bracelet around the child's wrist, his wedding stopped.
Because the name printed on it belonged to him.
And the date of birth was the exact day his first wife had supposedly died.
Vanessa Hart stood beside Luca beneath the crystal chandeliers of the Moretti mansion.
Her white wedding gown shimmered under the golden lights. Hundreds of guests watched as the priest prepared to exchange their rings.
Luca wore a black tuxedo.
His expression was calm.
But the moment Emily entered the ballroom, his eyes narrowed.
The maid was holding a small baby wrapped in a white blanket.
She looked exhausted.
Her uniform was slightly wrinkled, and her hands trembled beneath the child's weight.
Vanessa turned.
“What is she doing here?”
Emily didn't answer.
She walked straight toward the altar.
The guests began whispering.
One of Luca's security guards stepped forward.
“Miss Carter, you're not supposed to be in here.”
Emily stopped in front of Luca.
“Mr. Moretti, you need to see this child.”
Vanessa immediately grabbed her arm.
“Are you insane?”
Emily looked at her.
“Please let go.”
Vanessa's face turned red.
“You brought a baby into my wedding?”
Luca raised his hand.
The security guard stopped.
“Emily.”
His voice was low.
“Where did you get that child?”
Emily looked down at the baby.
Then she answered.
“I found her at the hospital.”
Vanessa laughed.
“That's ridiculous.”
She turned toward the guests.
“This woman has clearly lost her mind.”
Then she pointed at Emily.
“She kidnapped that baby.”
The ballroom erupted.
Several guests stood.
One of the guards moved toward Emily.
Luca's expression hardened.
“Don't touch her.”
The guard immediately stopped.
Luca stepped closer.
“Emily, explain.”
Emily carefully placed the baby on a small table beside the altar.
Then she reached into her apron.
She pulled out a hospital bracelet.
And placed it beside the child.
Luca looked down.
The bracelet was small.
White plastic.
The name printed across it was unmistakable.
LUCA MORETTI
He stopped breathing.
Vanessa stared at the bracelet.
Then she looked at the baby.
Her face suddenly went pale.
“That's impossible.”
Luca slowly turned toward her.
“What?”
Vanessa shook her head.
“No.”
She stepped backward.
“That can't be right.”
Luca picked up the bracelet.
His fingers tightened.
The date of birth was printed beneath his name.
October 3.
Six years earlier.
The exact day his first wife, Elena, had supposedly died.
Luca stared at the date.
Then he looked at the child.
The baby had dark hair.
Tiny fingers.
And a small crescent-shaped birthmark near the left wrist.
Luca had seen that mark before.
In a photograph.
A photograph of Elena taken shortly before her death.
He looked at Emily.
“Where did you get this bracelet?”
Emily swallowed.
“A nurse gave it to me.”
“Which nurse?”
“She said she had been waiting for someone from your family to come.”
Luca's eyes narrowed.
“Waiting for what?”
Emily glanced at Vanessa.
Then she looked back at Luca.
“To tell you the baby survived.”
Vanessa suddenly grabbed the bracelet.
“That's enough!”
Luca caught her wrist.
“Don't touch it.”
Vanessa froze.
He released her.
Then he looked at Emily.
“Who is the mother?”
Emily hesitated.
The baby began crying.
Luca immediately reached toward the child.
But Emily gently lifted her.
“She needs to be held.”
Luca looked at the baby.
For the first time that evening, his expression changed.
He carefully took the child into his arms.
The crying stopped.
The baby opened her eyes.
And Luca noticed something.
The child's eyes were the same shade of gray as Elena's.
He stared at her.
Then he whispered.
“What's her name?”
Emily looked at Vanessa.
Vanessa's lips trembled.
Emily answered quietly.
“Grace.”
Luca looked down.
“Grace?”
He repeated the name.
Then he turned toward Vanessa.
“Why does that name mean something to you?”
Vanessa shook her head.
“It doesn't.”
Luca's voice grew colder.
“Then why did you react when Emily said it?”
Vanessa looked at the baby.
The child suddenly reached out.
Her tiny fingers wrapped around Vanessa's hand.
Vanessa stopped moving.
The baby held her finger tightly.
For a moment, Vanessa looked as if she might cry.
Then she pulled away.
“Get that child out of here.”
Luca stepped between them.
“No.”
Vanessa stared at him.
“Luca, please.”
He looked at the hospital bracelet.
Then at the baby.
Then at Emily.
“Tell me everything.”
Emily took a deep breath.
“I wasn't supposed to bring her here.”
Luca's expression darkened.
“Why?”
“Because the nurse told me someone had been looking for her.”
“Who?”
Emily looked toward the entrance.
Then she whispered.
“Your fiancée.”
The ballroom went silent.
Vanessa's face turned white.
“She's lying.”
Emily shook her head.
“She told the hospital the baby had died.”
Luca slowly turned.
“Vanessa.”
She backed away.
“I was protecting you.”
“From what?”
Vanessa looked at the baby.
Then at Emily.
Finally, she whispered.
“From the truth.”
Luca took one step toward her.
“What truth?”
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.
She looked at the child.
Then she said something that made the entire room freeze.
“Because Elena wasn't supposed to have a baby.”
Luca's face went completely still.
He looked down at Grace.
Then at Vanessa.
“Why?”
Vanessa couldn't answer.
Emily stepped forward.
“Because someone had already decided what would happen to the child.”
Luca's hand tightened around the baby.
“Who?”
Emily looked toward the staircase.
A man stood at the top.
Luca's longtime family doctor.
Dr. Richard Hayes.
The man who had signed Elena's death certificate.
The man who had told Luca there was no baby.
Luca stared at him.
“Doctor?”
Richard slowly descended the staircase.
He looked at Grace.
Then at Vanessa.
Finally, he said:
“I can explain.”
Luca's voice dropped.
“You told me my wife died.”
Richard nodded.
“She did.”
Luca looked at the baby.
“Then who is this?”
The doctor stopped.
His eyes filled with fear.
Vanessa suddenly screamed.
“DON'T TELL HIM!”
Luca turned toward her.
“Tell me what?”
Vanessa backed away.
The baby began crying again.
Emily looked down.
Then she noticed something beneath the blanket.
A tiny silver necklace.
She gently pulled it free.
The pendant was shaped like a heart.
Inside was a photograph.
Luca opened it.
The picture showed Elena holding a newborn baby.
But there was something written on the back.
A message.
In Elena's handwriting.
Luca, if you're holding our daughter, Vanessa has already found out what happened to me.
Luca's eyes moved to the final line.
His hands began to tremble.
Don't trust the man who delivered her.
He slowly looked up.
Dr. Richard Hayes stood beside the altar.
And Vanessa was staring at him.
Not with fear.
With recognition.
Luca turned toward the doctor.
“Who delivered my daughter?”
Richard opened his mouth.
But before he could answer, Vanessa whispered:
“Your brother.”
Luca froze.
“Michael?”
Vanessa nodded.
Then she looked at Grace.
And the baby suddenly stopped crying.
She reached toward Vanessa again.
This time, Vanessa didn't pull away.
She held the child's tiny hand.
And whispered:
“I'm sorry.”
Luca stared at her.
“Why does my daughter know you?”
Vanessa looked up.
Her eyes filled with tears.
Then she said:
“Because I was the one who named her.”
Luca's expression changed.
Emily stepped forward.
“Mr. Moretti…”
Luca didn't look at her.
He stared at Vanessa.
“Why did you name my daughter?”
Vanessa opened her mouth.
But the baby suddenly began coughing.
Emily immediately reached for her.
“She's having trouble breathing!”
The doctor rushed forward.
Luca handed him the child.
Richard examined Grace.
Then he looked at the hospital bracelet.
His face went pale.
He turned toward Luca.
“There's something you need to know.”
Luca stepped closer.
“What?”
The doctor looked at Vanessa.
Then at Emily.
Finally, he whispered:
“Grace isn't the only child Elena gave birth to.”
Luca froze.
Vanessa dropped to her knees.
And Emily slowly opened the second hospital bracelet hidden beneath the baby's blanket.
The name printed on it was:
MICHAEL MORETTI.
