Chapter 10 - The Empire Burns

Adrian survived.

The Valente empire did not.

For six weeks, Luca dismantled what three generations had built.

He handed records to prosecutors.

Closed offshore accounts.

Sold warehouses.

Removed compromised executives.

Converted two shell corporations into employee-owned companies.

Three politicians resigned.

One judge disappeared to a country without extradition.

Julian voluntarily testified.

Sebastian negotiated badly and loudly.

Mateo entered witness protection negotiations but refused to disappear again.

Elena told him she would support his relationship with Mia.

Their marriage, however, was over.

Mateo accepted that.

Eventually.

Mia did not understand divorce but understood scheduling.

“So Daddy gets Wednesdays?”

“And weekends sometimes,” Elena explained.

“And Luca?”

Elena paused.

“Luca is not on the schedule.”

Mia frowned.

“He should be.”

Across the kitchen, Luca pretended not to listen.

“He has meetings.”

“He cancels them.”

Luca looked offended.

“I do not.”

Mia pointed at him.

“You cancelled three yesterday.”

Elena smiled.

“Caught.”

Luca muttered, “This house has become hostile.”

The transformation changed him.

Without the criminal empire, Luca discovered an alarming amount of free time.

He hated golf.

He found meditation insulting.

He attempted cooking again.

The smoke alarm developed trust issues.

One Sunday, Elena walked into the kitchen and found Luca staring at a ruined lasagna.

“What happened?”

“The recipe lied.”

“Recipes don’t lie.”

“This one omitted critical information.”

“Such as?”

“How difficult cheese is.”

Elena laughed.

Luca smiled.

He had begun smiling more.

People noticed.

Julian once told him it was unsettling.

“You spent ten years looking like a funeral,” Julian said. “Now you look almost human.”

Luca fired him.

Then rehired him forty seconds later because Julian reminded him payroll was due.

The deeper healing was slower.

Adrian began therapy under federal protection.

He hated it.

Therefore everyone agreed it was probably working.

One evening he told Luca, “Apparently I have unresolved paternal trauma.”

Luca stared.

“You needed a professional for that?”

Adrian threw a pillow at him.

Brotherhood returned strangely.

Not as it had been.

Something new.

Two damaged men deciding blood did not require repeating bloodshed.

Meanwhile, Elena completed a degree she had abandoned after Mia’s birth.

Luca offered to pay.

She refused.

He offered again.

She threatened to mop his shoes while he wore them.

He stopped offering.

Instead, he created a scholarship through the Valente Foundation without telling her.

She discovered it.

“You are impossible.”

“I didn’t give it to you.”

“You named it after Mateo’s mother.”

“She was a teacher.”

“You are manipulating technicalities.”

“I’m learning from Mia.”

Mia entered wearing sunglasses.

“You called?”

Both adults stared.

She pushed them down her nose.

“What?”

Elena whispered, “We created a monster.”

Luca looked proud.

Winter arrived.

Then Christmas.

For the first time in Luca’s memory, the mansion did not host businessmen.

It hosted families.

Employees brought children.

Rosa hung decorations everywhere.

Adrian complained about tinsel.

Julian wore an ugly sweater under protest.

Mateo came for dinner and discovered, to his horror, that Theo was dating his cousin.

Mia opened twenty-seven gifts despite Elena approving only five.

Luca claimed ignorance.

Nobody believed him.

After dinner, Elena found Luca alone on the terrace.

Snow drifted over Long Island Sound.

“You disappeared.”

“I’m here.”

She stood beside him.

Inside, Mia chased Adrian with a toy sword.

Adrian screamed dramatically.

“You’re thinking,” Elena said.

“Dangerous habit.”

“What about?”

“My father.”

She waited.

“I spent years wondering whether he would approve of me.”

“And now?”

Luca looked through the window.

At Adrian laughing.

At Mia.

At Julian.

At employees who no longer lowered their voices when Luca entered.

“I hope he wouldn’t.”

Elena smiled.

“That might be the healthiest thing you’ve ever said.”

He looked at her.

“Stay.”

She blinked.

“I work here.”

“No.”

His voice softened.

“Stay with me.”

The world became very quiet.

“Elena, I don’t know how normal relationships work.”

“I noticed.”

“I have significant flaws.”

“I made a spreadsheet.”

“You made what?”

She smiled.

“Kidding.”

He stared.

“You’re becoming cruel.”

“Mia’s influence.”

Luca took her hands.

“I cannot promise uncomplicated.”

“I don’t want uncomplicated.”

“I can promise I will never disappear.”

That mattered.

More than flowers.

More than money.

More than declarations.

Elena had loved one man who vanished to protect her.

She could not survive another.

“Never?”

“Never.”

She kissed him.

Softly.

Then again.

Inside the window, Mia saw them.

Her eyes widened.

She screamed, “ROSA! IT HAPPENED!”

Elena pulled away, horrified.

Luca began laughing.

The entire living room erupted in applause.

Elena covered her face.

“I’m moving to Canada.”

Mateo raised a champagne glass.

“Already tried that. Complicated.”

Everyone laughed.

Even Elena.

Especially Elena.

May you like

And Luca realized the mansion no longer felt like an empire.

It felt like a home.
