Chapter 9 - The Brother Beneath the Lighthouse

The abandoned lighthouse stood above the Atlantic like a broken tooth.

Luca went alone.

Technically.

Elena, Mateo, Theo and twelve security officers remained within five hundred yards.

Which Luca considered alone enough.

Inside, a lantern burned.

A man stood near the spiral stairs.

Forty years old.

Dark hair touched with gray.

Same eyes.

Same posture.

Luca recognized him before his mind accepted it.

“Adrian.”

His brother smiled.

“Hello, little brother.”

Twenty years collapsed.

Luca wanted to hit him.

Hug him.

Demand answers.

Leave.

Instead, he said, “You look terrible.”

Adrian laughed.

“There he is.”

Luca’s throat tightened.

“You were alive.”

“Yes.”

“All this time.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Adrian’s smile faded.

“Because Father tried to kill me.”

Luca stared.

Adrian explained.

He had discovered Antonio and Sebastian’s original operation when he was seventeen.

Smuggling.

Political corruption.

Violence.

Adrian threatened to expose them.

Antonio arranged the sailing trip.

The storm was real.

The accident was not.

Someone had sabotaged the mast.

“Father wanted both of us dead?”

“No.”

Adrian looked at Luca.

“Only me.”

He had saved Luca during the storm.

Then disappeared because he knew returning meant another attempt.

Sebastian found him years later.

They formed an alliance.

Not friendship.

Mutual hatred of Antonio’s empire.

“You worked with Sebastian?”

“To destroy the organization.”

“You murdered people doing it.”

Adrian’s face hardened.

“Collateral damage.”

Luca hated the phrase instantly.

“Mia would hate that answer.”

Adrian frowned.

“The child?”

“Yes.”

“You’ve changed.”

“So have you.”

“No.”

Adrian smiled sadly.

“That’s the tragedy. I didn’t.”

Luca understood.

His brother had remained seventeen emotionally.

Frozen at betrayal.

Every year afterward organized around revenge.

He had survived the father but allowed the father to determine the rest of his life.

“Come back with me.”

Adrian laughed.

“To what? Family dinner?”

“To end this.”

“You control everything Father built.”

“For now.”

Adrian studied him.

“What does that mean?”

Luca looked toward the ocean.

“I’m dismantling it.”

For the first time Adrian lost composure.

“What?”

“The illegal operations. The political networks. The shell companies. Everything.”

“You can’t.”

“I can.”

“You’ll destroy the family.”

“No.”

Luca looked directly at him.

“I’ll destroy the machine.”

Adrian stared.

This possibility had never occurred to him.

Revenge required an enemy.

Luca was removing it.

“What happens to you?”

“I keep the legitimate companies.”

“And the rest?”

“Evidence goes to prosecutors.”

Adrian laughed bitterly.

“You think confession makes you clean?”

“No.”

That answer mattered.

“I think accountability means accepting you may never be clean.”

Adrian’s expression changed.

Luca continued.

“I spent ten years becoming Father because I thought survival required it.”

“And now a housekeeper changed your mind?”

Luca almost smiled.

“Her daughter.”

Adrian laughed despite himself.

“A toddler defeated Antonio Valente’s legacy.”

“She’s very persuasive.”

For one second they were brothers again.

Then Adrian drew a pistol.

Luca’s smile disappeared.

“I can’t let you dismantle it.”

“Why?”

“Because I already sold it.”

Luca felt cold.

“To whom?”

Adrian whispered, “People Father was afraid of.”

Outside, Elena heard everything through Luca’s hidden microphone.

Theo swore.

Mateo looked pale.

Adrian continued.

“A network with no family name. No leader anyone sees. They buy collapsing criminal organizations and absorb them into legitimate global companies.”

“The crown?”

Adrian nodded.

“Sebastian thought he was the king.”

A bitter smile.

“He was just another employee.”

Luca finally understood.

The crown was not a person.

It was an organization.

And Adrian had invited it into their world.

“You need to come with me.”

Adrian shook his head.

“They’ll kill me.”

“We protect witnesses.”

“You sound like Elena.”

“You’ve been watching her?”

“Everyone around you.”

Luca’s expression hardened.

“Stay away from them.”

“Then you do care.”

Adrian lowered the gun slightly.

“That’s dangerous.”

“No.”

Luca thought of Mia’s definition.

Important people protect little people.

“Caring is the only reason power is worth having.”

Adrian stared.

Something broke behind his eyes.

Perhaps envy.

Perhaps grief.

Perhaps the recognition that his little brother had escaped a prison Adrian still occupied.

Then a red dot appeared on Adrian’s chest.

Luca saw it.

“DOWN!”

He tackled his brother.

Glass shattered.

A sniper round struck the wall.

Theo’s team moved.

Gunfire erupted outside.

Adrian looked shocked.

“They found me.”

Luca dragged him behind stone.

“No.”

He checked the angle.

“They followed you.”

Adrian laughed once.

“Still correcting me.”

“You were always terrible at details.”

“You were twelve.”

“You were still terrible.”

Despite gunfire, Adrian smiled.

Then his face changed.

Blood appeared beneath his coat.

Luca stared.

The bullet had passed through.

“Adrian.”

“I’m fine.”

“You’re bleeding.”

“I’ve done that before.”

Outside, Elena’s voice came through Luca’s earpiece.

“Extraction vehicle north side. Now.”

Luca helped Adrian stand.

His brother whispered, “Who’s the woman?”

“Elena.”

“She sounds bossy.”

“She is.”

“I like her.”

“You don’t know her.”

“I like anyone who gives you orders.”

Luca almost laughed.

They reached the vehicle.

Elena opened the door.

For half a second Adrian stared at her.

Then at Luca.

“Oh.”

Luca glared.

“Not a word.”

Adrian smiled through pain.

“You’re in love.”

Elena froze.

Mateo, driving, nearly hit a tree.

Luca looked murderous.

Adrian leaned back.

May you like

“This is the happiest I’ve been in twenty years.”

Then he passed out.
